Red Lobster's Shrimp Are Getting 47% Larger

0
0

Red Lobster

As Red Lobster proceeds with its turnaround plan, the seafood chain has made a clear determination about its shrimp: they're puny and utterly unfit for the modern, sophisticated scampi eater.

So the Orlando-based company has begun the process of upgrading to larger crustaceans — 47% to 86% larger depending on the dish, to be extremely specific. "It's a really big deal for us," said Salli Setta, President of Red Lobster, about the shrimp.

Red Lobster has christened them "Bigger, Better Shrimp," and will complete the transformation by mid-December. The upgrade affects about 70% of entrees on Red Lobster's menu that feature shrimp.

Shrimp is the "single biggest protein" at Red Lobster — which prepares 80 million servings of the shellfish each year, accounting for about 45% of sales — so it's important that they make the right impression. Yet many diners, Red Lobster found, were disappointed by their size, or as one particularly distressed person lamented on Twitter, the "tiny-ass shrimp."

"People were clear in what they wanted from us," said Danielle Connor, Red Lobster's senior vice president of menu strategy and development.

As it reworked its menu over the last year, the 705-restaurant chain introduced more lobster-based dishes and wild-caught seafood. "Now, we are focused directly on shrimp," said Setta. "I think we all were dreaming about shrimp." This summer, it started by updating its shrimp cocktail.

If you're wondering how Red Lobster arrived at the remarkably specific size increase of 47%, it's a figure derived from how commodity shrimp are sold. There is a standard range of shrimp sizes, Connor explained.

Red Lobster

For its Shrimp Skewers served during lunch, Red Lobster previously carried "Small" shrimp, a size that indicates about 51 to 60 shrimp per pound, and has now moved to "Medium Large" shrimp, which have about 36 to 40 shrimp per pound, for the dish — a 47% increase. Other dishes got even more dramatic upgrades. The shrimp in the Shrimp Scampi grew by 58%, jumping from "Medium" to "Large." The shrimp in the Shrimp Skewers served during dinner jumped three sizes from "Medium" to "Extra Large," getting 86% bigger.

Of course, there are even burlier shrimp in the market, such as Extra Jumbo (16 to 20 shrimp per pound, which Red Lobster uses in its shrimp cocktail), Colossal (fewer than 15 shrimp per pound), and Extra Colossal (fewer than 10 shrimp per pound). Red Lobster said it settled on these new sizes based on consumer tests, including a trial in 38 restaurants that began in March.

In addition to upsizing, Red Lobster also will start preparing the Shrimp Scampi in restaurants and added "enough scampi sauce to dip their Cheddar Bay Biscuits in," Connor said, a demand that came straight from consumers. In skewers, the shrimp will now be skewered both at the top and bottom so they form a C-shape. "We heard our guests tell us that that presentation signals quality and care," she said.

"We didn't just improve against guest feedback," Setta said. As the shrimp got larger, "We actually even started surprising and delighting as well." Who ever said bigger isn't better?

Samsung's Gear VR Is The First Truly Great Virtual Reality Headset You Can Buy

0
0

Samsung

The Samsung Gear VR gets a widespread consumer release this Friday. Two previous versions of the "Innovator Edition" of the headset, targeted at virtual reality developers, have been available. But with a price cut to $99 (down from $200), this time it's aimed squarely at the masses.

But wait: That $99 is a little deceptive, because you'll need to own or buy a Samsung smartphone to go with it — and it could easily run you an additional $650 to run out and buy an unlocked one. Which means it really only makes sense if you're already in the Samsung ecosystem. That said, if you're curious about VR — maybe you've already tried Google Cardboard and want to step up — the Gear VR is the best virtual reality headset available to consumers right now.

It's a collaboration between Samsung and Oculus. That hardware and software combo makes all the difference between the often novelty-driven Google Cardboard experiences and the kind of immersive stories and games that are needed to make virtual reality a bonafide medium all its own. While Cardboard is a great introduction to virtual reality, as its wide debut with the New York Times earlier this month demonstrated, Samsung's headset is for getting serious with it.

This is largely due to the hardware. It's sharp, interactive, and vivid. You can get lost in it. It's something you can spend some time in and still feel natural in ways that holding a cardboard box up to your face just can't match. It's easy to wear it for a half hour or more at a time, rather than minutes, and the experiences that come with it reflect that. They're fully realized worlds.

"The ecosystem is growing up right now," said Max Cohen, VP of mobile at Oculus. "It was about reaching bottomless content."

What that means is that the hardware that's being released today isn't really the news. It's existed for about a year, for you or I to buy, even if it was in a more expensive and less fully baked format. What's new is what you can see and do on it. It's just taken some time for the content — experiences filmed and programmed for virtual reality — to catch up. And now that both are working, it's worth showing off.

Bottom line: Samsung's new headset is really, really amazing, and it's a convincing case that virtual reality is here to stay.

Ustwo

Experiences like Land's End, a game from the creators of the critically acclaimed mobile game Monument Valley, do a lot of the heavy lifting in making such a case. It's a quiet, soothing game, contemplative and gently immersive, that is genuinely difficult to leave when it's time to take off the headset.

Or take Eve's Gunjack, an arcade-style space shoot-em-up that makes the most obvious predictions for VR — first-person shooters that feel like you're really there, but in a fun way — come true. Or even the 360-degree videos, like The Lion King onstage, or the New York Times' displaced feature, which feel, in image quality alone, a cut above what the experiences available on other apps or web browsers can achieve.

Gear VR launches with more than 100 experiences in the Oculus Store, and at least 40 others in development. That makes two promises: The first is, if you buy this, there will be plenty to do with it. The second is implicit. If the experiences available now are good — and some, but far from all, are — then it stands to reason that things are going to get even better.

Drift

Sharp Sense

There's also a great reason not to buy the Gear VR. The "true" virtual reality headsets — the Oculus Rift, the Sony Morpheus, and the HTC Vive — the hardware that plug into a PC and provide a more immersive experience with head-tracking so you can peep around corners, for example, are on their way in the next year. (The Gear VR, by comparison, can't track your head movements, just which way you're looking.)

There is an argument splitting the virtual reality industry right now over which kind of headset will take VR mainstream. Will it be the much-hyped, highest-quality (and expensive) headsets that offer head-tracking and live-in-it immersion? Or will it be the ones that are cheaper and easiest to get into people's hands and do the basic lifting?

Cardboard, as cool as it is, hasn't been an overly convincing answer to that second question. But the Gear VR, which is portable, inexpensive, and powered by the phone you always have in your pocket, makes a real case. It's something that's easy to see yourself diving into over, and over, and over again.

If you already have a Samsung smartphone, that is.

Black Student Assaulted In Oregon After Social Media Threats At Lewis & Clark College

0
0

A 26-year-old black male student from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, was attacked by three people on campus Friday night, according to Portland police.

The assault came three days after campus protests in response to threatening messages aimed at black students that surfaced on the anonymous social media platform Yik Yak.

Police responded to a call on campus at 12:49 a.m. Saturday, according to a statement. The victim, who told police he did not wish to be identified, said that around 9 p.m. Friday he was approached by three white, college-age males who “used racial epithets before assaulting him.”

The student escaped and went to his dorm. He told police that he consulted with friends before deciding to go to the authorities. He did not require medical attention.

Authorities have not confirmed a connection between Friday’s incident and the Yik Yak threats.

The police statement noted, however, that detectives assigned to investigate crimes of bias are looking into the assault case.

On November 17, Yik Yak messages threatening black students' lives and calling for a return to slavery prompted 200 students to protest with a sit-in on campus, according to Oregon Live.

Lewis & Clark Black Lives Matter, which is not officially affiliated with the nationwide movement, has called upon the campus community to initiate a buddy system to ensure student safety in light of Friday's incident.

Yik Yak

One member of the organization told BuzzFeed News that she and several other students were shaken by the incident on Friday night. The student asked to remain anonymous out of concern for her safety.

"It's a chaotic situation. We're in a moment of crisis," she said. "Many people are confused as to how we got to this place."

Oregon State Bar President Richard Spier has issued a statement about the YikYak posts: "We stand by students, faculty, school officials and alumni who are steadfast in their resolve to create campus communities in Oregon that welcome, value and support a diverse student body," he said.

16 Things Dermatologists Want You To Know About Your Skin

0

It’s probably time to stop using Pinterest as your dermatologist.

Amy Sefton / BuzzFeed

Let's face it: We've all had those moments of panic — a pimple before picture day, a bright purple stretch mark right at the start of swimsuit season, that dreaded first wrinkle — where we're willing to try (almost) anything to make our "imperfections" disappear.

Unfortunately, despite what Pinterest, Instagram, or some beauty blogs may have you believe, most skin woes don't have a magical fix. So how can you tell good advice from bogus? To take some of the guesswork out of it, BuzzFeed Life rounded up some of the most common skin care tips circulating online and asked four dermatologists to weigh in. Here's what they want you to know.

Expensive moisturizers don’t actually work better than cheap ones.

Expensive moisturizers don’t actually work better than cheap ones.

If you’re looking to remedy dry or oily skin, chances are there’s a product that will soothe your skin for much less than the “miracle” lotion endorsed by your favorite celeb.

“Vaseline is an outstanding moisturizer in that it “locks in” moisture from the outside and prevents what we call ‘transepidermal water loss’ which is associated with dry, irritated skin,” says Jason Miller, MD, a board-certified dermatologist with CentraState Healthcare System in Freehold, New Jersey and a clinical instructor of dermatology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “Blotting dry with a towel (not rubbing all of the water off) and immediately applying vaseline or another inexpensive moisturizer, such as Cetaphil or Eucerin, works very well.”

laprairie.com

Not all natural products are safe to put on your skin.

Not all natural products are safe to put on your skin.

“Just because it comes from the earth doesn’t mean it’s safe to rub all over your skin,” says Doris Day, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and clinical associate professor of dermatology at the New York University Langone Medical Center. “Arsenic and poison ivy are all-natural, but you wouldn’t want to rub those on your skin.”

While that might seem obvious, there are other seemingly harmless natural products you should probably steer clear of. For example, “Tea tree oil is estrogenic and young boys who used it started growing breasts,” says Day.

Over-the-counter products are better because they have been made and tested for use on your skin, she explains. If you’re set on using natural products, Day recommends mixing coconut oil, aloe, and honey, all of which are natural antibacterials. And it's a good idea to test a patch of any mixture on your arm before putting it on your face, to see if you have a reaction.
