Presidential Mom Jeans: A Retrospective

0
0

Mitt Romney is regularly accused of wearing “mom jeans” and President Obama is already famous for them. But just because they brought out their dad pants after SNL gave them a catchy name, they were hardly the only presidential candidates to wear them.

Presidential candidates hardly ever win accolades for their fashion sense. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney know this well, each having been accused repeatedly of wearing "mom jeans." The term was popularized in 2008 by Saturday Night Live, but the style of pant — faded, high-waisted, ill-fitting, FUPA-creating — has been, with few exceptions, a staple of presidential candidates' style on the trail for decades. Let's take a look back.

If JFK owned or wore jeans, they certainly weren't part of his public persona.

What Your Books And Websites Say About Your Politics

Conservative readers love Drudge and Ayn Rand; liberals like the Times and Noam Chomsky; and there's not much in the middle. The last infographic from Engage .

The infographics use data from Engage's Trendsetter app, a tool that cross-references polling data with influence and page "likes" from Facebook. Engage measures turnout by affinity toward politics and politicians, assuming that the more likely you are to "like" a politician of any party on Facebook, the more probable it is you'll vote on Nov. 6.

In the week leading up to the election, Engage rolled out 12 infographics with BuzzFeed that break down what your preferences — for food and alcohol, television and books, movies and games — say about your politics.

How To Be Like Beyonce At A Nets Game

The Most Awkward Moments In History

The Social Media Election According To "Saturday Night Live"

0
0

It's not far from the truth. But that doesn't mean it's the whole truth.

There's a beautiful dichotomy in social media highlighted by this bit on Saturday Night Live: Twitter is simultaneously where the elite political conversation is happening and where people, um, ask their followers to tell them who to vote for.

Previously, unearthing and exhibiting these living spectacles — quick to tell you they would not "bang" Romney — was a territory mined almost exclusively by The Daily Show and late-night talk shows that patrolled local newspapers and broadcasts, or swooped in to exploit unsuspecting color commentators. But Twitter and Facebook expose these people to everybody, en masse, ripe for mockery by anyone, anywhere in any outlet.

SNL doesn't even need to find real people on Twitter or Facebook to mock anymore; we already know they're there.

Garbage Piles Up On Staten Island

The Sandy-battered NYC borough has a new kind of flood to worry about. A very smelly flood.

Image by Seth Wenig / AP

On Saturday, the City of New York's Sanitation Department announced that it's continuing citywide storm debris and trash collection. It also told concerned Staten Island residents on Twitter that trucks were out on the island, but filling up fast.

The department did not respond to requests for comment Monday on specific Staten Island cleanup efforts.

Trucks will continue to be out Tuesday, despite Election Day's holiday designation. Meanwhile, recycling pickup has been canceled throughout the city.

Obama Responds To 10-Year-Old's Letter About Her Gay Dads

“They are lucky to have such an exceptional daughter in you,” the president wrote to Sophia in response to her note, which went viral last week.

Sophia penned a thoughtful letter to the president, in which she discussed her support of Obama but also being bullied for having two gay dads:

I am so glad that you agree two men can love each other because I have two dads and they love each other, but at school kids think that it's gross and weird, but it really hurts my heart and feelings...

Even NBA Players Were Affected By The Gas Shortage

Andray Blatche apparently had no idea gas would be hard to find after Hurricane Sandy.

Perhaps in his intense preparation for the start of the season, Blatche happened to miss the massive destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy, which has resulted in crippling gas shortages and hours-long lines at the pump across the New York/New Jersey area. Simply put, you can't find gas quick fast anywhere in the tristate area, Andray.

Instagram Is Turning Into Facebook

0
0

Instagram's new Web profiles just changed everything. Expect cries of “Instagram is ruined!” and get ready to lock your account.

Nike's Instagram web profile

You'd be forgiven, if at first glance, you thought you were staring at Nike's Facebook page. You're actually gawking at its Instagram Web profile, a new feature that's rolling out for all Instagram users over the next week. It's the first major "un-Instagrammy" change since the service was acquired by Facebook, and it's probably going to leave some users grumbling.

John and I say it so often lately about social networks that we joke about it: "Your mom is looking a lot more like Facebook." But it's now truer of Facebook-owned Instagram than any other social network around — even as Facebook and Instagram continue to insist that Instagram operates independently inside of Facebook. I mean, just look at Nike's Instagram profile. It's got the same virtual bones as its Facebook page, just a more beautiful skin.

Nike's Facebook page

While Instagram's Web profiles sound like a minor feature, they mark something more profound in a couple of ways. By exploding Instagram out of a mobile-only context in a meaningful way for the very first time, the bubble of privacy and intimacy that had been a hallmark of Instagram — however illusory it was — may finally pop. Web profiles finally make it easy to see every photo a user has posted, in a way that was not possible previously without using a third-party Instagram service. And you can do it on a computer. Everything by everyone is exposed on every platform now, unless you've got a locked account.

The thing is, by being an exclusively mobile service until now, Instagram was able to tap into something deeply emotional, which was exactly what made it special — there's something far more personal about mobile, to the extent that even as Instagram has ballooned into a service with a 100 million users, there's still largely been a sense that even public profiles are kind of hidden. Or at least somehow safer, not like a wide open Twitter or Facebook profile. It's where you can be yourself. Your real real self, not your social media self. (Though the media's rampant usage of Instagram photos for Sandy coverage may have gone a long way toward bursting that particular bubble as well.) I doubt that people will stop using Instagram, but I suspect there's going to be a general if vague sense that Instagram has lost something. That "something" is a sense of safety, and it's hard to be genuine and emotional when you don't feel safe.
