This gut-wrenching photo of 89-year-old Fidencio Sanchez pushing a popsicle cart in Chicago has moved people to donate almost $300,000 to help him retire.

The picture was taken by Joel Cervantes Macias, who told BuzzFeed News he was struck by the sight of the elderly man struggling to push his cart down the street.

"Everyone [was] walking past him like he wasn’t there," he said.

Macias pulled over and bought some paletas from him, then shared the photo on his Facebook page.

The response was immediate, and it soon led to a crowdfunding campaign to raise $3,000 to "give him a day off" from work. The GoFundMe page currently stands at about $290,000, and it's still climbing.

“It was shocking how amazing the response was," Macias said.

Sanchez and his wife had to return to work after a family tragedy left them to care for their two grandsons. “They have money problems," Macias said. "He just lost his daughter earlier in the year and he didn’t even have money to bury her.”

Sanchez returned to his popsicle cart, which had been his job for over two decades, and his wife sold candy outside of church to pay the bills, Macias said.

They're still coming to grips with the sudden generosity from strangers, but a lawyer is working pro bono with the couple to make sure they get the full benefit of the money.

Lucy Stone (1818-1893), American abolitionist and suffragist

"Lucy Stone was a feminist activist and abolitionist. Stone was the first woman in Massachusetts to obtain a college degree and, after college, she helped take immense leaps for both the feminist and abolitionist movements. She was a published author and journalist as well as a successful orator. Plus, she wore trousers in the 1800s."

Zenobia, 3rd-century Queen of Palmyrene Empire in Syria

Zenobia, 3rd-century Queen of Palmyrene Empire in Syria

"Queen Zenobia – HOW DO PEOPLE NOT KNOW ABOUT HER? – was the warrior queen of what is now Syria, a feminist, and a diplomat. She spoke at least four languages, wrote a book chroniciling a thousand years of Asian history, and spear-hunted bears and lions from horseback. She and her husband, in full battle armor, led armies across Persia, defeated an invasion of Goths (not the Hot Topic kind), and she was such a badass that the Pope praised her bravery. When her husband was murdered, she arrested the murderers and offered them up as human sacrifices at the Temple of Baal just to prove a point.

But Zenobia was just getting started. She declared herself Queen of the East, invaded Egypt, and ruled over a gigantic empire. She fixed the economy, built alliances with Arabia, and sent the Roman army packing when they dared to fuck with her."

The photo was snapped by South Australian plumber Russell Latter, who told BuzzFeed News he spotted the koala sitting on the road looking very lost and wet.

"I was driving along the road and I noticed a koala looking very wet and a bit stuck because the flood water was on both sides of the road," he said. "I stopped my car and coaxed him over a little bridge, stopping cars along the way."

Emergency services have received hundreds of calls as multiple suburbs in South Australia face mass flooding, fallen trees and evacuation orders.

Around 60 homes have been either inundated or damaged.

Latter said that after the koala was safely across the road he walked down a fence and smelled a wooden post.

"He recognised it, I suppose, and climbed on top."

After a short rest, the koala skipped over a shallow part of the floodwater and climbed up a nearby eucalyptus tree.

"Where we live, there's koalas most days in the trees," Latter said.

The plumber has received dozens of calls from media and news crews asking to visit his home after the photo of the koala went viral.

"I've had to stop work and cancel jobs it's been so much," he said.

People are calling this school bus driver a hero after she saved 20 elementary school children from a raging bus fire Monday afternoon in College Park, Maryland.

The driver, Renita Smith, told ABC News the bus began smoking after the third or fourth stop of the day. She grabbed her radio to call for help, but then saw flames in the rearview mirror. That's when she went into "mommy mode," she said.

"I put the mic back down, undid my seatbelt, jumped up, got my babies, and got off," Smith said.

ABC News

And not only did she evacuate the children — she went back in the bus, as it was being engulfed by flames, to make sure no one was left behind.

"We did a group hug, the tears started rolling," Smith, who is a mother of two, said. "But me, as mommy, no, I have to be strong for the babies."

ABC News

The fire "completely destroyed" the bus, according to Fazlul Kabir, an onlooker who went to help.

Everyone made it off the bus unharmed and uninjured.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but is thought to have started "near one of the rear wheels" before spreading to the rest of the bus, authorities said.

Everyone's Super Impressed With This Sex-Crazed Tortoise Who Saved His Species

Diego is a legend.

This is Diego, a Galapagos giant tortoise who pretty much saved his entire species from extinction with his insatiable lust for booty.

According to AFP, Diego is over 100 years old and has fathered an estimated 800 offspring.

The sex-crazed tortoise is a Chelonoidis hoodensis, a species found only on Espanola in the Galapagos Islands. There were only two males and a dozen females of the species left on the island about 50 years ago. But largely through Diego's efforts at a nearby breeding centre, along with six females in his enclosure, the tortoises have bounced back, numbering in the thousands.

"He's a very sexually active male reproducer," Washington Tapia, a tortoise specialist at Galapagos National Park, told AFP. "He's contributed enormously to repopulating the island."

Genetic testing shows that Diego has fathered about 40% of the tortoises released on Espanola. The whole species pretty much owes its survival to this sex god.
