Instead of apologizing for calling the wrong number and hanging up, Hill actually started FaceTiming the kid and asking how his day was going, what he was up to, etc. "We were talking to each other like we knew each other," he told BuzzFeed News.

Apparently, the kid also had a friend over.

"His homie was in the back dancing," Hill added.

The two ended up talking for more than 15 minutes. Hill shared the random encounter on Facebook with his friends, who all found it hilarious. Hill and the kid laughed about it some more over text afterward.

It’s 2016 And No One In Australia Seems To Know How To Deal With Revenge Porn

0
0

The Australian government, police, education bodies and social media sites appear to be struggling to figure out how to adequately deal with revenge porn online.

facebook.com

This week a revenge porn Facebook group and private chat called Melbourne's Men's Club was shut down by Facebook for a second time.

The group first appeared earlier this year, and Facebook took down the group down after BuzzFeed News reported on its existence.

But the group's resurgence highlights the inability of authorities to deal with revenge porn in any meaningful way.

In October last year federal Labor MPs Tim Watts and Terri Butler introduced a revenge porn bill to parliament. The bill aimed to amend the Criminal Code Act to introduce three new offences for anyone involved in "image-based sexual exploitation."

Mick Tsikas / AAPIMAGE

When the bill was introduced, the Coalition government refused to bring it up for debate, saying it would be better dealt with by state governments, not federal.

Victoria is the only jurisdiction to have criminalised revenge porn. South Australia, Western Australia, and NSW are introducing measures to follow suit. The government is still refusing to make it a federal offence. The Coalition's current policy is to create a national complaints mechanism for victims of revenge porn.

In February, a senate inquiry into revenge porn called for it to be criminalised on federal and all state and territory levels. The report also called for police to receive a "basic minimum training" in relation to non-consensual sharing of intimate images. In the report, the Australian Federal Police said it struggled to deal with incidents of revenge porn in a timely matter.

Authorities also seem unclear on who should deal with reports of revenge porn, and how they should go about policing it.

facebook.com

Melbourne's Men's Society first appeared in April, and BuzzFeed News contacted Victoria Police to ask what it was doing to stop the spread of revenge porn and the formation of groups such as Melbourne's Men's Society. Victoria Police instructed BuzzFeed News to contact ACORN, the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network, however by that time the page had already been removed by Facebook.

Victoria Police eventually told BuzzFeed News that without the exact name of the person who reported the page, and the location of the person, they would not be able to act.

When Melbourne's Men's Society appeared again this week, BuzzFeed News went directly to ACORN. ACORN told BuzzFeed News it had "no investigative powers or remit" and that investigating cybercrime was the responsibility of Australia's law enforcement agencies. BuzzFeed News then contacted Victoria Police multiple times, both by email and phone, but it is yet to respond.

The Victorian schooling system already has multiple schemes in place to teach students about safety and appropriate behaviour online. A spokesperson for the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority told BuzzFeed News several areas of the curriculum aim to help students navigate relationships by providing strategies for safe interaction online.

The curriculum also advocates “appropriate bystander behaviour”, in other words encouraging students to stand up for each other and report wrongdoing when it's encountered. A Victorian Department of Education spokesperson said the department was “working hard to educate young people about the smart, safe, and responsible use of social media.”

"We also warn students about the consequences of this type of behaviour," the spokesperson said, "from the emotional impact on those targeted to the potential criminal repercussions for perpetrators.

However, BuzzFeed News' interactions with members of Melbourne's Men's Society, which appears to mostly consist of young men, suggests some students aren't responding to the education programs. Many of the members told BuzzFeed News that there was a rival all-female group that was also sharing naked images of young men. When the members were asked to supply evidence of this, they failed to do so, but believed it to be reason enough to share their own images of naked women.

facebook.com

Members of Melbourne's Men's Society also seemed to rally under the premise of "brotherhood."

facebook.com

"MMS is a brotherhood of love," said one member. "Everyone is so quick to judge us for the old MMS pages around nobody is willing to even think twice before judging."

facebook.com

Both the BuzzFeedOz News Facebook and a reporter's Facebook were sent messages from members of the group saying "don't dog the boys," along with explicit images in some cases.

Other members pleaded ignorance, believing that if they had not submitted photos themselves they were not liable.

"I take no interest in them [photos of naked women]," said a member. "I don't give a fuck." When pressed as to why they wouldn't report the images, knowing the media was wrong, the same member said "I didn't see them, cunt."

BuzzFeed News has contacted Minister for Justice Michael Keenan for comment.

"We Don’t Support Anal Sex Full Stop": Our Chat With An Anti-Gay Lawmaker

Queensland became the last Australian state to introduce equal age of consent laws for anal sex on Thursday night.

Queensland became the last Australian state to introduce equal age of consent laws for anal sex on Thursday night.

Dave Hunt / AAPIMAGE

Two members of the Queensland parliament voted against the change: Shane Knuth (left), and Robbie Katter, both of Katter's Australian Party.

I rang Knuth to ask him why. Here's what he said.

Me: Why did yourself and Robbie Katter vote against the equal age of consent laws?

Knuth: We’ve always been very consistent in, you know, our position, when it comes to, you know, same-sex marriage, or, or… what’s the other one? Same-sex marriage. Civil unions! And, you know, we just feel that, you know, we’d be hypocritical to support the removal of aged consent for anal sex.

Why do you think the age of consent for anal sex is like same-sex marriage?

Basically, we just do not support that position. We have constantly said a relationship should be between a male and a female, a man and a woman. We have taken a very strong position on that in the past.

Sure. So do you think that anal sex between men at any age should be criminalised?

I’m not commenting on that, but just that we, you know, believe a relationship should be between a man and a woman. We’ve always stood our ground on this. And we also moved the amendment in the house back three years ago, that relationships should be between a man and a woman.

I guess what I’m, what I'm trying to understand here is why specifically you think the age of consent should not be equal to the heterosexual age of consent, if you don’t think it should be criminalised the whole way through. I'm just trying to understand that position.

We just don’t believe in it full stop. Whether it’s 16, 20, 18, we don’t believe it in full stop.

Justin Sullivan / Getty Images

Taking that point, if you think it is always wrong, then do you think it should not be legal at all?

Well, we voted against it. Our position was pretty clear.

So your position is anal sex should be criminalised for any age?

No, what I’m saying is, our position was it should not have been reduced to 16 years old.

Yep, and, sorry, what I’m trying to figure out is if your position for it not being reduced is based on a general opposition to a relationship between two men, does that extend to thinking sex between two men in a relationship should always be a criminal offence?

No, I’m not indicating that. But I believe that it’s getting a bit cagey to reduce that age down, will they want to bring it down to 14, or 12, later on?

OK. Are you worried about the age of consent for heterosexual sex also being lowered?

We do have concerns. We have concerns with that, yes. Obviously our concerns and our position was that we don’t approve of it.

OK. Mr Knuth, I was also wondering, what you do think the consequences of equalising the age of consent will be in Queensland?

What do I think of the consequences?

Yeah.

Only time will tell with that. But I think that it would probably give more of a possible predatory approach to the younger generation.

Do you think that same-sex attracted men are more likely to be predatory than heterosexual men? Is that the basis of that concern?

No, I’m just… We don’t support anal sex full stop. And the lowering of it. Now, you can keep trying to trick me into a different position, but I’m in good faith to ring you, to put a position forward, but what I’m saying is that we don’t support it full stop.

Yeah, I’m not trying to trick you at all. I’m just trying to figure out the logical extension of that position.

Yep, I know. What I’m saying is, I’ve given you an answer, we can keep going on and on and on about it. I’m just making this clear to you. We don’t support it. We feel that reducing it down to 16, from 18 because it could be predatory, in that aspect. But in that aspect, we just do not believe in it. Full stop. In anal sex.

OK. Did you have anything you wanted to add on that?

No, that’s probably it. We just don’t believe it, do not support it, and never will support it.

OK. Well, thank you very much for your time, and have a good afternoon.

OK. Thank you.

Revenge Porn Facebook Page Returns As Private Facebook Group Chat

The Melbourne's Men's Society Facebook page, used by Melbourne-based men to share revenge porn, has been moved to a series of private Messenger group chats after the page was shut down by Facebook for a second time.

facebook.com

facebook.com

The group chats, which BuzzFeed News has seen, have a 24-hour lifespan before a new chat is formed. Members of the group are required to submit a naked photo of a girl before "naming and shaming" if they wish to be invited to the next day's group chat.

facebook.com

facebook.com

The Messenger chats are full of men asking others to identify the women in the photographs and to share videos.

facebook.com

In one instance, members of the chat encourage another member to threaten a girl with the possibility that her pictures would be shared within the group if she didn't confess who had told her about the group chat.

Facebook.com

The men in the group acknowledge that some of the women pictured are under 18.

facebook.com

The chat has also become a forum for members to ridicule the bodies of the women in the pictures.

facebook.com

facebook.com

facebook.com

Some of the men boast about having their own personal “vault” of photos saved to their phone and that they have names for the women in hundreds of the photos.

facebook.com

The men believe the group chats are a safer option for sharing images than a private Facebook group, because it is much more difficult to report private group chats to Facebook. Users are required to fill out a form to report a Messenger conversation.

A Melbourne woman who knew of the group chat's existence told BuzzFeed News she had tried to research how to report a group chat and had found that you can't.

"There is an option to report as 'abuse' but it's an old feature," she said. "It doesn't work when you click it.

"It really is disgusting. I felt sick reading some of the messages."

facebook.com

Members of the group can be seen rapidly fleeing one of the conversations when a user says "the cops are on to us".

BuzzFeed News has contacted Victoria Police for comment and reported the activity to Facebook.

This Guy Wants All Men To Recognize The Link Between Gender Inequality And Family Violence

"Nothing that Nikita did contributed to what [her husband] did," Chawla told BuzzFeed News. "But within the media, especially initially, there was stuff suggesting she in some way contributed to another person's actions against her."

His 23-year-old sister was stabbed 35 times with a meat cleaver by Parminder Singh who then called 000 and told an emergency operator to “come and collect the body."

"I think as a nation we see violence against women in offshore detention centres or in the streets, but actually our homes are one of the most dangerous places for women," Chawla said.

Australian men shouldn't feel like "good guys" just because they haven't hit their partners, he said, because "there is a causative relationship between gender inequality and acts of violence like rape and murder".

"There is this continuum and whether it is a larrikin at the pub making sexist jokes or extreme forms of homicidal violence it is born of the same power dynamics," he said.

"People don't often see an issue with sexist jokes because they won't necessarily lead to violence against women, but we know now that these things reflect and reinforce harmful stereotypes and sexist attitudes and allow for a situation where it makes it somehow OK for people to question a woman's behaviour when she is attacked."

Chawla has called on Australian men to address their levels of "privilege and entitlement" and give some of it away.

"We wake up every day as a guy and it is the best, I have so much male priveglege so let's give it to everyone," he said.

"We need to make these changes so we can educate young boys to grow into respectful men."

Barker was 16 when her ex-boyfriend choked her, slammed her head against a steel park bench and stomped her face into the ground.

"Teach children they don't have to to hang out with anyone who isn't being respectful to them, and children who aren't respectful need to be told or shown what it is they are doing that is wrong," she told BuzzFeed News.

After being on life support, spending eight weeks in hospital, four months in rehab, two years in a nursing home and five years learning to talk, Barker now lives with a brain injury.

"The guy who did this to me is now out free to be in a relationship and have children if he wishes," she said. "Where is the justice in that?"

Lukas Coch / AAPIMAGE

"Victim-blaming still looms large," Our Watch chair Natasha Stott Despoja said at the organisation's awards night on Wednesday.

One in four Australian women has experienced physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner and one in four Australian women has experienced emotional abuse by a current or former partner.

"Nearly one in six news reports imply the victim is to blame... 16% of reports about sexual assault and rape implied women had placed themselves at risk," Stott Despoja said.

"Evidence tells us that news articles endorsing victim-blaming and rape myths make people more likely to side with a perpetrator, and dismiss a woman’s complaint of sexual assault."
