How To Beat Uber’s Surge-Pricing Algorithm (And Lyft’s Too)

$

Uber surge pricing, Lyft Prime Time: Call it what you will, but it's never fun to fire up a ride-hailing app when you're in a hurry only to discover that everyone else is in a hurry too — and your ride is going to cost more because of it.

Surge pricing is almost always a nasty surprise. And it's widely loathed by ride-hail passengers — so much so that in January, Uber said it was moving away from surge multiplier notifications (like "3.0x the normal fare") and instead showing prospective passengers the estimated total cost of their ride before its request. That makes it easier to avoid situations like this:

instagram.com

But surge pricing can still be frustrating, even if you know the cost of your ride in advance. Below, we've gathered a few handy tips and tactics for avoiding it, from the quick and dirty to some that require a bit more planning and effort.

Check the ride-hailing tab in Google Maps.

Priya Anand / BuzzFeed News

Google integrated Uber into its Maps service back in 2014. Earlier this month, it added Lyft and a handful of other ride-hail companies. Today, you can use Google Maps to compare estimated fare ranges and trip times for nine ride-hail companies across more than 60 countries — no need to fire up each app individually.

Schedule Lyft rides in advance.

Priya Anand / BuzzFeed News

Uber and Lyft recently began rolling out a feature that allows passengers to schedule their trips in advance. Uber says these rides are subject to the pricing conditions at the time — including surge multipliers. But Lyft locks in your price if you schedule a ride in advance. The company's estimate does account for whether or not your ride will occur during "Prime Time," for example, if you schedule a pickup during rush hour. But beyond that, the rate is set and you aren't susceptible to additional price hikes if demand increases further. You must schedule the ride at least 30 minutes or up to 7 days ahead of the pick-up time.

Wait it out — or walk a few blocks — and try again.

In a 2015 study, researchers at Northeastern University found that passengers with some free time on their hands have a reasonable chance of escaping Uber's surge pricing simply by waiting it out — or by moving beyond the surge zone. They ran 43 versions of the Uber app pretending to be people in various parts of each city, and found that cities are divided into surge areas that look like this:

Courtesy of Christo Wilson

They also found that surge prices change frequently. "Theres a 60% chance the price is not going to stay high for more than five minutes," Christo Wilson, who led the Northeastern team, told BuzzFeed News. "If you happen to be standing at a location that's right between the border ... you can actually get different prices just by walking across it."

But that advice comes with a caveat: You could end up walking deeper into a surge zone. "The easiest thing is just to wait," Wilson said. "If it's not rush hour — or last call, when all the bars close simultaneously — the rest of the time if you see a surge, it's ephemeral. It will go away."

Try apps like SurgeProtector.

SurgeProtector, which launched in 2014, claims to take the guesswork out of gaming Uber's surge. It uses Uber's API to find locations close to you with lower surge pricing. Simply drop a pin and move it around to locate a surge-free locale. Reviews are mixed; SurgeProtector has three stars in the iTunes Store.

Download the driver apps.

If you're really dedicated to saving your hard-earned cash, apply to drive for Uber and Lyft and then download their driver apps. Both use heat-map visualizations to show areas of heightened demand where fares will temporarily rise. In order to access these driver apps, you'll have to share a bit more of your personal information with each company. But hey, you're already giving them your credit card number, contact information, and location anyway.

Sure, throw it out once clumpy, but also throw it out after three months regardless of its condition. Mascara is the easiest item to get an eye infection from. The wand gets very close to your eyes, and then goes back into the dark, warm tube – the perfect breeding ground for bacteria!

Pumping the wand actually makes your mascara drier, clumpier, and more flaky, as it simply introduces more air into the tube. More air also means more bacteria tends to become trapped inside.

It's totally fine to sleep with your makeup on.

The main issue with sleeping with your makeup on is that the skin renews itself during sleep and makeup dramatically affects the skin's ability to do just that. This process is essential to keep the skin hydrated and fresh. Wearing makeup overnight clogs the pores and dehydrates the skin, and eye makeup left overnight can even lead to infections.

I Tried The Insanely Strong Coffee Everyone In Australia Is Talking Abou

How would you like 52 coffees in one?

When I heard that South Australian café, Viscous Coffee, had conjured up a coffee that contained the equivalent of 52 espresso shots, I knew I had to try it.

You could say I’m your stereotypical coffee drinker in that while I love the stuff, I definitely have my limits. My morning double-shot latte? Perfect. Any more than four cups of coffee in the one day? I'm a trembling bundle of nerves.

As humans we're conditioned to challenge ourselves, so I decided to try this coffee that was apparently the strongest in the world.

Madeleine Dunne

Affectionately known as the Adelaide Ass Kicker, this is the baby everyone's been talking about. It may appear harmless - cute, even - but I can assure you, it's about as innocent as a bottle of tequila.

Affectionately known as the Adelaide Ass Kicker, this is the baby everyone's been talking about. It may appear harmless - cute, even - but I can assure you, it's about as innocent as a bottle of tequila.

A large cup of the Ass Kicker starts with four espresso shots poured over four custom-brewed coffee ice cubes, each of which equal a double shot, and a dash of frothy farmer's milk. Next, 120mL of the café's own cold-drip coffee - which is meticulously brewed over 10 days and contains the equivalent of 32 espressos - is added to the mix, before another four of those crazy coffee ice cubes.

Thankfully, there's also a small version of the coffee, which contains 25 shots of coffee. In comparison, it seemed pretty tame.

Low-key this is the main reason I decided to make the ~smart~ choice and opt for the small instead of the large.

My first thought? It actually didn't taste that bad.

My first thought? It actually didn't taste that bad.

Look, it was no fluffy latte, but it wasn't dishwater, either. The $10 hit was hardly any different taste-wise to your classic long black. Plus, after learning about the time and effort that goes into making a coffee this strong, I found an extra sense of appreciation I definitely wasn't expecting.

Here's What's Up With Getting Depressed Around Your Period

Because at a certain point, it’s more than PMS.

This week’s question: Why do I get more depressed before my period?

This week’s question: Why do I get more depressed before my period?

Hi,

I was diagnosed with major depression a couple of years ago, and while I'm still working it out, I have it pretty much under control right now. Without fail, however, crushing sadness/apathy/emotional numbness or a combination of those greet me about three days before my period starts.

At what point does this cease to be normal PMS and become something that maybe can or should be treated? Who should I talk to about this?

Thanks!

—Anonymous

Hey Anonymous! So, full disclosure, right off the bat: You'll have to see a doctor to know for sure what's going on with you specifically.

In the meantime, we talked to Dr. Catherine Birndorf, clinical associate professor of psychiatry and obstetrics and gynecology at Weill Cornell Medical Center and Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale School of Medicine, about the relationship between your period and depression. Here's what they had to say:

Loryn Brantz / BuzzFeed / Via Facebook: BuzzFeedComics

Being sad, moody, or irritable is a pretty typical symptom of PMS — but when it affects your ability to function, it's probably something more.

Being sad, moody, or irritable is a pretty typical symptom of PMS — but when it affects your ability to function, it's probably something more.

"Functional impairment" — meaning when something gets in the way of your day-to-day life — is where experts draw the line between typical negative emotions and an actual disorder. We'll get to what those disorders might be in a second, but there are a few questions you can ask to know if something more serious is going on than regular PMS.

"Have you missed work or school?" says Birndorf. "Do you stay home a day or two a month because you're so miserable with these symptoms? Is it, 'I'm sad and moody and don't want to leave the house' or is it, 'I'm so miserable or angry or depressed that I can't?'"

And if that sounds like you, that's when it's time to talk to a doctor. When you do, these are the things they'll probably go over with you:

ABC / Via alliefallie.tumblr.com

It could be premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a disorder that causes severe depression symptoms before your period.

In the simplest terms, PMDD is really bad PMS. According to the DSM-5, to be diagnosed, you have to have five of the following symptoms (and at least one of the first four):

  • Sudden mood swings
  • Irritability, anger, or increased conflict with others
  • Depressed mood or feelings of hopelessness
  • Anxiety or tension
  • Decreased interest in usual activities
  • Difficulty staying focused in attention or thinking
  • Fatigue
  • Change in appetite, or food cravings
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping more than usual
  • Feeling overwhelmed or out of control
  • Physical symptoms, such as breast tenderness, joint or muscle pain, weight gain, or bloating

What's also important here is that your symptoms are cyclical, says Minkin — aka most of the month you're completely fine, then anywhere from a few days to two weeks before your period (everyone's different), the symptoms set in. And then once you start your period, they lessen and go away. Rinse and repeat.
