How To Answer Your Mom's Questions About Lena Dunham This Holiday Season

$

Over the course of 2012, the Girls creator skyrocketed to mass-marketed superstardom. Which means your Mom has questions.

The trailer for the second season of Lena Dunham's HBO show Girls just came out. The overwhelming consensus is that it looks pretty good, not that it matters much, as the show was recently picked up for a third season. In recent months, Dunham has also been nominated for an Emmy and scored a $3.5 million book deal. Esequire said she's "building an empire." And she casually goes out to dinner with Claire Danes.

When you head home for the holidays, there's a decent possibility your Mom will ask, "What's up with Lena Dunham?" Here's how you should answer.

Mom: Do you know this Lena Dunham?

Mom: Do you know this Lena Dunham?

You: Yes. People were kind of iffy on her back in 2011, but in 2012, everyone became obsessed with her!

Allow me to explain. About a year ago, her show Girls released the trailer for its first season. Bloggers wrote and tweeted about the series, mostly because, well, an HBO show about living in Brooklyn written by a then 25-year-old is the kind of thing lots of bloggers like to write about. It seemed promising, but also possibly doomed to fail — like I Just Want My Pants Back, MTV's one-season attempt at a "hipsters living in Brooklyn" show, did. Some film industry insiders and young culture-hungry types were Dunham fans, a credit to her 2010 film Tiny Furniture. But a large group of naysayers also existed, calling her a not particularly talented product of nepotism. She attracted attention, but as a tattooed 25-year-old who looks different from most other women in Hollywood, she was bound to. Besides, she was barely in Hollywood.

Now she has a show, and a book deal, and an Emmy nomination, and she's friends with all the celebrities.

What is her show about?

What is her show about?

Girls is about a group of young women living in New York City. They have fairly disastrous love lives and even more disastrous professional lives.

This is a 5.5-qt Round Le Creuset Dutch Oven. It is the one you should get.

Maybe you want to step up your cooking game. Maybe you are outfitting your first kitchen. You're doing your wedding registry. You're making your Christmas wish list. Maybe you're just ready to own a decent pot for goodness sake.

Get this one. It will set you back about $270 but IT IS WORTH IT.

5.5 quarts is the perfect size

5.5 quarts is the perfect size

Source: hillpeppard.com

It will fit a whole chicken, a pork loin, a bunch of boneless pork shoulder, short ribs or lamb shanks.

Ask yourself these questions:

How much food do you usually cook?
The 5.5 qt is perfect for making meals for four people, or for two people with leftovers. If you regularly cook for more people than that, consider the 7qt, which is the next best option. Any smaller than 5.5 quarts and it's going to be annoying if you want to, say, make a bunch of chili.

How big are your oven, stovetop, and sink?
It can be tempting, especially if you're asking for this as a gift, to GO BIG. And that's fine, but keep in mind that the big ones are very heavy (you're going to be transferring this thing from your stovetop to your oven when it's very hot and full of food). Le Creuset's largest models might not fit in a modest-sized sink. So check the dimensions before you buy.

What other cookware do you have/use?
Nothing? Cool. Then this is perfect. But let's say you have a stockpot in the 7-10qt range — then you won't have to use your dutch oven to make stocks, huge quantities of soup, pasta, or steaming lobster. If you have good saucepans in the 3qt range you won't need it to make sauces. And if you have a small saute pan for eggs and sauteing small portions of steak, fish, or chicken then you won't need to use it for that, but you could!

It is the better shape.

10 Vintage Phallic Ads

Sometimes, a cigar was just a cigar. And sometimes, it wasn't.

It's a Dicknic!

Take a good look at the ad. The foreground woman has one penis-y bottle in her hands while being force-fed a dog. Background woman is showing Chip how much of his dog she can fit in her maw at once. I don’t know about the sexual orientation of the fifth-wheel dude, but he’s making damn sure we notice the bananas. Then, there are the extra dogs, the knives, the shirt stripes — even the pattern on the basket looks like erect penises.

Is that Thrush header muffler a phallic symbol? (Yes.) Is that the Grim Reapress? (I don't know.) And is the Donny Osmond doppelgänger wearing a flame-retardant drag racing suit or some terrible '70s outfit? (I don't know.)

Ah, 70s men's fashion.
That piece of wood could be thicker.
Read the copy for a good guffaw.

Let me squeeze it for you, babe.

If you've ever wanted to watch a Hitler sex tape…from 2009.

Yes, this was a real campaign released by German ad agency Das Comitee to "raise awareness for AIDS and World AIDS Day," back in the Fall of 2009. (The related website is now long dead.)

There is so much Wrong here — the concept, the headline, the horrible Photoshop work (whoever that guy is, it ain't Stalin) — it defies human existence.

And what the hey: if we're going to show dead despots banging chicks, let's get some porn star-looking hotties, amirite?

GOTT IN HIMMEL, I'm coming!!!

Saddam was very grab-assy.
