18 Astounding Hubble Photos Released In 2012

The universe is beautiful and terrifying.

Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have photographed a festive-looking nearby planetary nebula called NGC 5189. The intricate structure of this bright gaseous nebula resembles a glass-blown holiday ornament with a glowing ribbon entwined.

This composite image of a portion of the Tarantula Nebula's central cavity illustrates the profound effect new stars can have on their environment. The young stars are acting something like cosmic, decidedly non-eco-friendly light bulbs. Each star cranks out a dazzlingly high wattage in the form of optical and ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

About 300 million light-years away, only four of these five galaxies are actually locked in a cosmic dance of repeated close encounters. The odd man out is easy to spot, though. The interacting galaxies have an overall yellowish cast. But the predominantly bluish galaxy is closer, just 40 million light-years distant, and isn't part of the interacting group.

This galaxy is having a bad millennium. In fact, the past 100 million years haven't been so good, and probably the next billion or so will be quite tumultuous. The upper left galaxy used to be a normal spiral galaxy, minding its own business, until the one toward its right, crashed into it.

The Weirdest Lessons People Learned In 2012

Courtney Love Is Done With Hole

She's sick of playing “oldies,” so she's just going to perform as a solo artist from now on.

Courtney Love says that she's dropping the band name Hole, and will henceforth write, record, and perform as a solo artist. She revealed this in the comments section of the Facebook page for Mark Yarm's excellent grunge history book, Everybody Loves Our Town.

The original incarnation of Hole was active between 1989 and 2000, and broke up officially in 2002. Love released one album as a solo artist, America's Sweetheart, but that record flopped upon its release in 2004. Too bad, really, because it had some really great songs on it, like "But Julian, I'm A Little Bit Older Than You."

Shocking New Anti-Smoking Ad

A cancerous tumor grows on a man's cigarette as he inhales.

This commercial via the UK's Department of Health will start appearing on TV in the new year, and run for nine weeks. It's the DoH's first national effort in eight years.

The Department says they developed the shockvertising because their research shows that more than a third of smokers still believe that the health risks associated with smoking are "greatly exaggerated."

If Santa bruoght you some cigs for Christmas, maybe the spot will give you pause.

"Santa, You Arn't My Type," A 9-Year-Old's Anti-Love Song

Apparently my younger self thought Santa liked me “like that,” so I decided to let him down not-so-easy via song. [ ed. note: this hilarious song comes to us via keepsake show & tell ]

Santa, you take my feet off the ground
You turn my frown upsidedown
You make me twirl around and around
But Santa, you arn't my type
NO not my type

As a matter of fact,
you are way too fat
Last year when I asked for a remote control corvet,
all I got was a paper jet.

So Santa now you can see
your looks just don't impress me

Here's another thought that's a dread:
I dispise the color red.

Here's another thing, so listen here!
I'm allergic to reindeer

When I leave cookies on the fireplace,
you just stuff them in your face...

Santa, you take my feet off the ground
You turn my frown upsidedown
You make me twirl around and around
But Santa, you arn't my type
NO not my type

The Year In Hate-Watching

From The Newsroom and Smash to Twilight , 2012 was the year we loved to hate.

Source: HBO

There was a time when we watched TV shows and movies because we liked them. But round about the dawn of Twitter, we wanted something else from our entertainment — namely, fodder to complain about all day and night. 2012 was the year hate-watching became our national pastime. Across the airwaves and in our multiplexes, it often seemed like people were tuning in just to find something to throw rotten eggs at. Across the landscape, we were out in force complaining about the sequels that let us down, about the cop shows that never turned over the bad guy, and the cable shows that railed away on soapboxes. America felt entertainment let them down this year, and they took to their Twitter accounts to let entertainment know it.

Here are the shows and films that inspired the highest volume of griping in 2012 and our thoughts about whether the complaints were deserved — or whether we were getting all worked up about nothing.

1. "The Newsroom"

1. "The Newsroom"

The Aaron Sorkin HBO drama was blasted by critics for being preachy, speechy, sexist, racist, anti-technology, implausible, and just flat-out annoying. Though I consider myself to be a Sorkin fan (West Wing, A Few Good Men, Sports Night, The Social Network — love them all), I felt those things too. Yet I couldn’t stop watching The Newsroom, and I looked forward to every episode. It entertained me. I grew to genuinely love Olivia Munn’s character, Sloan Sabbith, the brilliant business anchor who seems to be on the autism spectrum (as so many TV characters do these days). The rest of it — I have no real explanation for why I watched. I just wanted to see what would happen with the relentless plotting, and I liked hearing the actors talk even if I recoiled from what they were saying. I cried a few times too; I won’t tell you when, but one instance rhymes with “wosama kin plodden.” I think a lot of HBO viewers plain old liked it, cleaving from critics and hate-watchers; it drew an average of 7.1 million per week, according to HBO. The arguments around it, and the show itself, made 2012 more interesting. And I can’t wait for season two! —K.A.

11 Recent Rape Awareness Ads [NSFW]

Unfortunately, rape is currently worldwide front page news . Here are some awareness ad efforts from around the world. [ Ed. note : some disturbing imagery and partial nudity ahead]

2008.
The national Telefono Donna Rape Helpline put up these crucifixion posters in Italian cities to raise awareness for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Predictably, many conservative Italian politicians screamed in protest.

2012.
Poster that went up all over England prior to a big national rugby tournament.
That headline/visual combo clashes very violently and uncomfortably.

2008.
Staggeringly awful statutory rape awareness ads via the United Way of Milwaukee. They were quickly pulled.

2012.
Again via the United Way of Milwaukee.
While the thought behind these statutory rape ads is better, that url (BabyCanWait?) is just horrible.
