Celebrities At Coachella, Week One

Why Can't The LAPD Catch Celebrity Swatters?

$

There have been six celebrity swatting attacks in the last week, and zero arrests. The LAPD and FBI don't want to talk about it.

Everyone from Ryan Seacrest to The New York Times wants to talk about "swatting" (or faking a dramatic 911 call to dispatch a SWAT team to the home of a targeted celebrity) this week. Everyone, that is, except the frustrated law enforcement agencies who are failing to track down the prank callers or stem the dramatic increase in incidents.

On Thursday, LAPD announced it would no longer discuss swatting incidents, of which there have been six in the last week alone at a cost law enforcement has estimated can be as high as $10,000 a pop.

LAPD officer Sara Faden said the department is "choosing not to encourage" copycats by ceasing to issue press releases and refusing to confirm details of the incidents to members of the media without a formal public records request. A spokesperson for the FBI's L.A. field office, which assisted the LAPD in tracking down one prankster, also declined to answer any questions related to swatting.

Law enforcement may hope not talking about it will make the problem go away, but interest in swatting — a term Officer Faden calls misleading since calls are answered by regular police officers, not the department's SWAT team — does not appear to be dying down.

In the past week residences belonging to Ryan Seacrest, Russell Brand, P. Diddy, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, and Selena Gomez were all targeted by prank 911 calls.

On Tuesday, L.A. city council member Paul Koretz introduced a motion calling for the creation of a city ordinance that would order pranksters to repay the LAPD for costs associated with responding to calls.

The same day, in Sacramento, the first hearing was held for Senate Bill 333, introduced by state senator Ted Lieu. The measure, co-sponsored by the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Department, would also force anyone arrested for making a false 911 call to repay police for the incident.

Both pieces of legislation would make callers liable for as much as $10,000 — that is, if callers are arrested at all. So far, law enforcement has demonstrated a dismal record at catching swatters.

The single recent arrest the LAPD has made in connection with a celebrity swatting attack was of a 12-year-old responsible for making calls that sent police to the homes of Justin Bieber, Ashton Kutcher, and a Wells Fargo branch on Wilshire Boulevard during one week in October.

The tween used a telecommunications device for the deaf, which allowed him to text 911 calls impersonating victims at different addresses. The caller requesting assistance at Kutcher's home told authorities she was hiding in a closet while Russian men ransacked the house. The caller asking for help at Bieber's home told a dispatcher shots were fired by a gunman making threats to police.

Swatting target Russell Brand didn't seem all the troubled by the "attack" on his home. Speaking about the incident, which took place Monday, on Ryan Seacrest's morning radio show on Wednesday, Brand joked, "If all swatting attacks are this unnoticeable, I'm ready for war, because I didn't even know that it had happened."

When Seacrest told Brand that law enforcement was increasing penalties on swatters to as much as three years in jail, the actor burst out laughing, "That's a bit severe!"

"But they're, but they're — this is serious stuff," Seacrest, whose home was swatted hours later, stuttered. "They are playing with fire in a way, saying there are armed attacks going on at Selena Gomez's house."

Brand was unconvinced. "I think if I were a teenager I would definitely do it," he said.

"42" Breaks The Box Office Curse Of The Baseball Movie

But Scary Movie 5 is just cursed.

There may be no crying in baseball, but there's definitely little money in baseball movies. For some strange reason, America's favorite pastime has never gone over all that well at the multiplex: Not one single film about baseball has opened past the $20 million mark at box office. Until now.

The Jackie Robinson biopic 42 just made Hollywood history, debuting this weekend with an estimated $27.3 million, the best U.S. opening for a baseball movie ever, even when adjusting for inflation. (It's also one of co-star Harrison Ford's best opening weekends in years that didn't involve aliens or Indiana Jones.) The film earned a rare "A+" rating from the audience-polling firm CinemaScore, which suggests some serious word-of-mouth momentum that will serve the film well through the rest of the month. It could easily join 1992's A League of Their Own as the only other baseball film to gross over $100 million total. Apparently, audiences like their baseball movies spiked with a heady degree of trailblazing.

On the other side of the box office spectrum, Scary Movie 5 couldn't even manage to scare up half its predecessor's debut, banking an estimated $15.2 million this weekend against Scary Movie 4's $40.2 million opening weekend in 2006. Now, that is scary.

You could blame the fact that the first Scary Movie movie in seven years was missing franchise stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall. You could blame the fact that the film was largely marketed on the off-putting presence of tabloid staples Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen. You could blame the fact that the horror movie genre isn't currently dominated by a single franchise or trend, which makes it harder to find over-used horror tropes ripe for spoofing. (Perhaps that's why the film also shoe-horns in parodies of Inception, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and The Help?) Or you could blame the fact that the horror spoof movie audience had been sated by the January horror spoof movie A Haunted House, which opened with a slightly-better $18.1 million.

Basically, there is a lot of blame to go around. The Scary Movie franchise used to be a reliable cash machine for Dimension Films, but with this performance, the micro-studio may be wise to keep it locked away in the cellar for the rest of eternity. Please.

Here are the estimated top 10 box office figures for Friday to Sunday, courtesy of Box Office Mojo:

1. 42* — $27.3 million
2. Scary Movie 5* — $15.2 million
3. The Croods — $13.2 million
4. G.I. Joe Retaliation — $10.8 million
5. Evil Dead — $9.5 million
6. Jurassic Park 3D — $8.8 million
7. Olympus Has Fallen — $7.3 million
8. Oz the Great and Powerful — $4.9 million
9. Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor — $4.5 million
10. The Place Beyond the Pines — $4 million

Dingbat High School Kids Claim They Could Beat Michael Jordan One-On-One In His Prime

We've projected what would actually happen if they played.

Via: Beth A. Keiser, File / AP

Michael Jordan hosts the "Jordan Brand Classic" high school all-star game this weekend in Brooklyn, and USA Today scored an entertaining scoop by asking the prospects how they'd do 1-on-1 against #23 in his prime, discovering that four of them are delusional narcissists who think they could take down the champ.

We've run some advanced computer simulations to see how these four bold, stupid individuals would actually do in that scenario.

Dakari Johnson — Montverde, FL (Kentucky commmit)

Dakari Johnson — Montverde, FL (Kentucky commmit)

Johnson predicted only a 1-point victory (11-10 in USA Today's theoretical game to 11) and offered at least a semi-plausible explanation (he's four inches taller than Jordan and would be able to grind out points in the post) for why he'd do well. Our simulation gives him credit for humility. He loses 11-0.

Andrew Harrison — Richmond, TX (Kentucky commit)

Andrew Harrison — Richmond, TX (Kentucky commit)

Harrison had the gall to claim he would "lock [Jordan] down" for an easy four-point win. In return, Jordan locks Harrison down — in the pit/prison from The Dark Knight Rises. When Harrison manages to climb to the top six months later, he finds that he has in fact only climbed into a second, bigger prison, where he is sentenced to 30 years of Michael Jordan raining turnaround jumpers in his eye. Final score 30,000-nothing.

Female Students In Tajikistan Now Required To Wear High Heels To School

The shoes are to be no more than 10 cm (or about 4 inches), Emma Sabzalieva writes on her blog, which focuses on higher education in Central Asia, a subject she researches. Sabzalieva, who picked up the story from Tajikistan newspaper Asia-Plus, writes:

I read through Asia-Plus' latest reportage on the situation with complete bewilderment. Could it really be that the Rector believes that ordering such a dress code (which is much more explicit than the national dress code for university students) – and having security guards at the entrance of the university checking this in what in Russian is called face control – will enhance female students' learning experience? Will it make them smarter or better equipped to learn?

Of course, the answer is no.

This is not the first time Abdujabbor Rahmonov has interfered in such affairs. As Minister of Education, he introduced a dress code into schools which included such rules as banning male teachers from having beards.

She also translates this reaction posted to the Asia-Plus Facebook page, where people expressed outrage but not surprise: "Where is Tajikistan and its government heading? Rather than starting with high heels… it would be better to strengthen teaching, stop bribe-taking and simply give students the chance to study…"

Has A Top Model Superfan Already Spoiled The Show's Next Season?

Probably . Cyber-sleuthing — and spoilers — ahead.

And the internet has already spoiled the show's eliminations.

Having just about turned its "jumped-the-shark" status into an edgy, fierce photo shoot, Top Model's latest cycle features both girl and guy models competing for the title. of. America's. Next. Top. Model. It's the first time male models have taken part in the show; it's also why Tyra has that Post-it on her face in the above photo.

After each photo shoot, all the model's "best" shots were posted on the CW Network's website, with fans grading their efforts and picking their favorites. In an unsurprising trend, these faves consistently appeared to be the buff, white guys.

A quick primer on how the voting works: Each model's overall average score from the public gets added to a score from each of the judges, Tyra herself, Kelly Cutrone, and sexpot male model Rob Evans — as well as an even-more-arbitrary grade for participation in any given episode's challenge. Once all those marks get combined, it's the model with the lowest total who doesn't get their photo from Tyra and therefore peaces out. (This way the judges/producers can continue wielding influence over the show's eliminations and story lines.)

Cycle 20's first shoot saw the models posing in "unconventional" wedding photos.

Stunning New Gun Control Print Ad

Ir features a child holding an AR-15 assault rifle.

Headline:
"One child is holding something
that's been banned in America
to protect them.
Guess which one."

The ad is by a group called Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

The explanation, via babble:

"The Charles Perrault version of Little Red Riding Hood, the one that was banned by two California school districts, was controversial not because both the grandma and the little girl are eaten by the wolf by the end of the story, but because — as the Christian Science Monitor notes, "one of the refreshments for her grandmother that Little Red Riding Hood carried in her basket was wine."

Second Amendment defenders will cry foul over the the image of a grade school-age girl holding what appears to be a Bushmaster XM-15, the same weapon used by Adam Lanza to shoot and kill 26 Connecticut school children.

What do you think?

Ad agency: Grey, Canada.

Related: Here's the accompanying TV spot which also dramatically features an AR-15 rifle.

This Is Martin Richard, The Youngest Victim Of The Boston Marathon Bombing

Eight-year-old Martin Richard is the first victim of Monday's bombing whose name has been made public.

Source: facebook.com

This is Martin, 8. He died in the Boston bombing yesterday. He was at the finish line with his family, waiting for his dad to cross. His mother and little sister were catastrophically injured. He was the student of our dear friend, Rachel Moo. His message resonates powerfully today. My prayer is that we all live by Martin's words, paying tribute to his too-brief, but immeasurably valuable life by following his example.
