Hit Clips Were The Best Way To Listen To Music

It was a testament to man's ingenuity. And attaching one (or 17) of these bad boys to your Jansport backpack was a thing of status.

Remember Hit Clips?

Remember Hit Clips?

The dictionary-worthy definition: They were small media players, created by Tiger Electronics in 1999. They played about a minute of lo-fi stereo recordings (typically just a chorus or two). They were awesome — and totally the influenced the way we'd listen to music in the years to come (on the cusp of a new millennium!).

It was basically the link between the cassette single and the MP3. Seriously. Think about it.

How "Happy Endings" Star Adam Pally Ended Up In "Iron Man 3"

“I'm gonna start a Kickstarter to pay Marvel to get my character into all the rest of the Marvel movies.”

It's a staple of the Hollywood action comedy — some lucky actor swoops in for a single scene and ends up stealing it right from under the movie's leading star. For Iron Man 3, that actor was Adam Pally (perhaps best known as Max on ABC's Happy Endings). Pally plays Gary the cameraman, a Tony Stark superfan who helps Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) hack into the mainframe of an evil corporation via Gary's local news satellite truck. As you do.

As it happens, in real life, Downey has been something of a mentor to Pally — the global superstar even personally gave Pally the news that he was in the film. The 31-year-old actor shot his scene for roughly three days in Wilmington, N.C., but when BuzzFeed spoke with him last week about the experience, his name had yet to appear on the movie's IMDb page (an omission that has since been corrected).

You're not on the IMDb page right now for Iron Man 3, so it was a nice surprise to see you in the movie.

Adam Pally: I don't know if they know that I'm in the movie. It kind of feels like I snuck in, but it's totally fine because I heard I'm in the movie, so that's good.

How did you come to be in the film at all?

AP: I was fortunate to work with Robert Downey's production company for a web series about three or four years ago. I just started writing with them and then was writing some stuff for Robert, and we hit it off. I think he liked me. Then I heard they wanted to see me for that part, I went in, I read it once, next day I got a call that I was going to be in Iron Man. It was pretty much like that.

What was the web series that you were working on?

AP: It's nothing that ever came to pass. It was more just cool to get to go and sit down with Robert Downey. One of the ideas we had tossed back and forth was the idea of him teaching me how to be a better actor, because I'm clearly a mess, and also not, in his eyes, a great actor. (Chuckles) We would meet a couple times a year and talk about some ideas that maybe could work on a couple different platforms. His staff would cook lunch and it was fucking awesome. It would be such a thrill to spend hours improvising with Robert Downey. A dream come true. He's a total hero of mine.

Did you know when they called you in for Iron Man 3 what the role was going to be?

AP: No. I read some [audition] sides that were probably from Iron Man 2 or something. Drew Pearce had seen a lot of my stuff — he co-wrote it with [director] Shane Black — and he kind of helped draft it to me a little bit. When we got down there, we improvised a lot of it. That was it.

Did you know when you showed up to set that your character had modeled his look after Tony Stark?

AP: I knew something like that was going on because when I got the part, Robert called me. I think it was like 4:30 in the morning, which is not strange. He was like, "Congratulations—you're gonna be in Iron Man." I was like, "Thanks." He was like, "You're gonna be great, you're gonna be terrific. Grow a Van Dyke." I was like, "What? What did you tell me to do?" "Grow a Van Dyke. All right, talk to you later." And he hung up. I didn't speak to him again until I saw him on set. I showed up with a Van Dyke. I had an idea that I was gonna be some kind of Tony Stark fan. I think the bummer for him is that I look pretty good in a Van Dyke. It's not a silly as he thought it would be. Joke's on him.

What was it like being on set?

AP: For being Iron Man 3, it was such a normal, easygoing shoot. Robert gave me the yerba mate on set. There was no gossip. It was like working a normal job.

Wait, what did he give you?

AP: Yerba mate.

What is that?

AP: An organic tea that's, like, way better for you than coffee. I drank it for a day and then I went back to coffee, but it was good.

So obviously IMDb doesn't know that you're in the movie, but were you allowed to tell other people that you were in the film? Did you tell your friends and family?

AP: I told some friends. I probably shouldn't say this — I signed a lot of NDAs, I don't know what that means. But I told some friends and family and my wife. I didn't spread the word around town. Also I knew from being in some big movies before that there's a chance you get cut, and I wanted to not put myself out there and then get cut from the movie.

I hear what you're saying, because from a plot standpoint, they could have cut your part out and the story would have flowed without a hitch. So it's nice that you stayed in there.

AP: Well thank you. I don't know a lot of what the plot specifics are because you are not allowed to read the other pages.

One of the things that made me happy about seeing you in the movie is that I was hopeful that maybe it would be a boon for Happy Endings.

AP: Yeah, that would be great.

It doesn't seem like things are looking that great for renewal by ABC, but there's also talk of moving to a basic cable network instead. Do you know anything about this yet?

AP: I stay out of all of this. I don't know anything. The only thing that I know is that everyone wants to go back to work on Happy Endings. Be it ABC or someplace else, I know that people are chomping at the bit to get back to work. I hope that it would happen. There's no way to know anything. The network makes up their mind, and that's a very tight-knit, tight-lipped group. I know that there are positive vibes, but I that's all. I hope it comes back.

Well, at least now you're also officially part of the Marvel universe.

AP: I am. I would hope that there would be a world where in every Marvel movie, Gary the cameraman would have to get some footage. I know that that's probably not going to happen, but I would urge all future directors to think [about it]. You know, I'm gonna start a Kickstarter. I'm gonna start a Kickstarter to pay Marvel to get my character into all the rest of the Marvel movies.

Conservative Women's Group Claims Credit In Mark Sanford's Win

A conservative non-profit that was among the few national groups to back former Governor Mark Sanford, despite his complicated personal life, claimed victory on Tuesday night, and celebrated a $250,000 independent expenditure spent in the final week in South Carolina's first district.

"Independent Women's Voice was the only outside group supporting Sanford on a significant scale, by educating voters about the facts about the Democratic candidate," said IWV president Heather Higgins in a statement.

The group came into the district to support Republican Mark Sanford after the National Republican Campaign Committee opted to stay out of the race when Sanford's ex-wife accused him of trespassing.

Sanford's poll numbers had dropped considerably two weeks before the election, and they showed him trailing his opponent Elizabeth Colbert Busch by 9 points. IWV says they had no plans to get involved in the race but they poll tested the district to determine if their money could help at all.

Mitt Romney won the district by 18 points, but Sanford's personal life had given Democrats a reason to believe the race was competitive. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spent $458,000 on the race along with the House Majority PAC, which spent $426,000. An official with the DCCC said the committee broke even on the race between their agressive fundraising and expenditures. Sanford ended up winning by 10 points.

With a specific focus on repeal of Obamacare, IWV ran TV and print ads, including a full page Monday ad, signed by 200 women, urging support for Sanford.

"Sanford's victory marked a tremendous comeback against long odds. He was out fundraised by Colbert Busch 3:2, and money poured into the race from the Democratic Party and from a number of PACs for his opponent," Higgens said.

Why We Need To Save "Bunheads"

$

One of ABC Family's best dramas is in limbo. Here's a reminder that Bunheads is worth saving.

Relatable characters.

Relatable characters.

Michelle is far from perfect: she's actually pretty damn flawed, which is part of what makes her such a compelling character. We like her because we knows she's trying — and like us, she fails a lot. She just wants to be a Broadway star and make out with cute guys, OK? We are all Michelle Simms.

Quirky characters.

Quirky characters.

But while Michelle is grounded in reality — despite the fact that no one talks that fast — there are plenty of other Bunheads characters that fall on the wackier side of the spectrum. It's a delicate balance, but the kookier denizens of Paradise keep things interesting (and weird).

Professional dancing.

Professional dancing.

The dancing is SO GOOD. That's what happens when you hire professional dancers. What's great is that they're also good actors, so you don't have to compromise anything. But seriously, even for non-ballet fans, it's impressive, and the dance breaks showcase a lot of solid talent that wouldn't be getting this kind of exposure otherwise.

Frank talk about sexuality.

Frank talk about sexuality.

Teens are going to have sex, no matter how uncomfortable that makes their parents. Bunheads has done a great job of showing the reality of sexuality among teens without being exploitative or icky. These are young people figuring out their relationships, and doing it in a grounded, sympathetic way.

Watch The Gay Sitcom That Has Become A Sensation In Vietnam

The series about gay 20-somethings in Vietnam has become a YouTube sensation.

Huynh Nguyen Dang Khoa posted the first episode of "My Best Gay Friends" in early April. Since then, the series featuring mostly gay, lesbian, and transgender characters has gone viral in Vietnam, and is being heralded as a sign of how fast attitudes towards homosexuality have changed in a country that is still governed by an authoritarian regime.

"I thought it would only interest Vietnam's gay community -- but we're hearing that parents, grandparents, whole families watch and love the shows and long for new episodes," Khoa told AFP.

The show has a homespun feeling, which Khoa shoots with his digital SLR. His cast is made up mostly of his friends.

Vietnam's government has gotten attention recently for taking steps towards legalizing same-sex marriage. Last month, deputy health minister Nguyen Viet Tien made headlines for endorsing the idea.

"As human beings, homosexuals have the same rights as everyone else to live, eat, love, and be loved," he said.

"My Best Gay Friends" is filmed in Vietnamese, but it is helpfully subtitled in English.

7 Female Musicians Discuss Their Experiences With Sexism

$

For female artists in many areas of the music world, dealing with gender inequality is a regular part of the job. In their own words, here's what that's like.

For many women in music, sexism in their professional lives is commonplace.

For many women in music, sexism in their professional lives is commonplace.

Via: Julien M. Hekimian / Getty Images

Experimental pop musician Grimes outlined what this means for her in a Tumblr entry about the behavior she finds most disturbing and offensive. Here's just a small piece of her post:

i dont want to be molested at shows or on the street by people who perceive me as an object that exists for their personal satisfaction

i dont want to live in a world where im gonna have to start employing body guards because this kind of behavior is so commonplace and accepted and I'm pissed that when I express concern over my own safety it's often ignored until people see firsthand what happens and then they apologize for not taking me seriously after the fact…

I'm tired of men who aren't professional or even accomplished musicians continually offering to 'help me out' (without being asked), as if i did this by accident and i'm gonna flounder without them. or as if the fact that I'm a woman makes me incapable of using technology. I have never seen this kind of thing happen to any of my male peers

Via: edohaus.com

It's not just Grimes who feels this way. Female musicians spanning many genres and levels of fame have been open about their experiences in ways that speak to gender inequality. In an email to BuzzFeed, Heather D'Angelo of electro-pop band Au Revoir Simone referenced the last paragraph, quoted above, of Grimes's post and how it relates to the ways she's felt condescended to by men:

Au Revoir Simone has been on the receiving end of completely unsolicited advice from the most random dudes since our first show in 2003. And it's also true that as an all-female, all-synth band, we seem to be susceptible to a very special brand of "advice": "You know, you ladies would be so much better if you had [insert any instrument here]." As if we never before thought of having a live drummer or guitars until it was suggested by some guy whose musical prowess most likely doesn't extend much farther than a Saturday night playing Guitar Hero.

These "helpful hints" undermine D'Angelo as an established, professional artist, but at least they acknowledge that she's in the band at all. D'Angelo's bandmate, Erika Forster, recounted the many times she's been mistaken for a hanger-on as opposed to an actual musician:

Since the early days of our band we experienced a lot of, "Are you the merch girls?" and being sternly told that we were't allowed access somewhere by men, or sometimes women, who assumed we were the girlfriends or groupies.
