Rare behind-the-scenes photos of civil rights activists training to endure the harassment and violence they would face.

In 1960, college student activists gathered at Shaw University in Raleigh, NC, and organized the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to fight for civil rights.

SNCC played an important role in civil rights history and was fundamental to the organizing of sit-ins, freedom rides and other forms of direct-action protest. To prepare for the type of hatred and violence they would encounter, students practiced "passive resistance training." While SNCC was non-violent, the type of training the students had to do included everything from verbal abuse and hair pulling, to spiting and getting aggressively physical. These training sessions, briefly depicted in a scene in The Butler, were difficult and often included white members of the group having to enact the racism the group was fighting.

These photos provide a rare glimpse into the emotional, physical, and psychological work activists did in order to prepare for their non-violent resistance. They were taken by the legendary photographers James Karales and Eve Arnold. These photos have been published with permission from their respective estates.

“You know nothing,” Weiner says. “You think you can judge me?”

In the video uploaded to YouTube on Wednesday, Democratic mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner is leaving a bakery when a man apparently shouts at him from off-camera. Weiner engages him, getting into a heated argument with dozens of cell phone cameras recording the altercation.

The man calls Weiner "disgusting."

"You're my judge? What rabbi taught you that?" Weiner responds.

"Your behavior is deviant. It's not normal behavior," the man continues. "Think about your wife. Right, how could you take the person you're most closest to — and trusts you — and betray her?"

"You don't get to judge me because you've shown no sign your superior to me and you are not my god," Weiner responds at one point.

The New York City mayoral primary election is Tuesday, Sept. 10. Weiner is the candidate of choice among 7 percent of likely Democratic primary voters, according to a Quinnipiac University survey released Tuesday.

Weiner was a top candidate in the race until Sydney Leathers, a woman he sent lewd messages to after resigning from Congress, came forward with her story in July.

Can I draw in that too, mama?" I have to admit, the girl knows good art supplies when she sees them. I muttered something about how it was my special book, how she had her own supplies and blah blah blah, but the appeal of new art supplies was too much for her to resist. In a very serious tone, she looked at me and said, "If you can't share, we might have to take it away if you can't share."

Oh no she didn't! Girlfriend was using my own mommy-words at me! Impressed, I agreed to comply. "I was going to draw a body on this lady's face," I said. "Well, I will do it," she said very focused, and grabbed the pen.

She says she was shocked and completely in love with what the end result of letting her daughter finish the drawings.

21 Times Actors Who Aren't Actually Transgender Have Played Trans Characters

Despite Laverne Cox’s success on Orange Is The New Black , Hollywood still has a lot of work to do regarding trans visibility.

Actress Laverne Cox has dazzled viewers as transgender prison inmate Sophia Burset on Orange is the New Black. Many of the accolades come from the trans community, as Cox's work as Sophia has raised awareness about casting trans performers as trans characters. While performers including Candis Cayne, Calpernia Addams, and Harmony Santana have won film and television roles in the past, these casting choices are rare.

What television and film audiences usually see are cisgender men and women performing as a trans characters. Sometimes these roles are played for laughs, sometimes not. Often, trans women are portrayed as hyper-feminized versions of women, with exaggerated makeup, wardrobe, or mannerisms. In the case of male actors playing trans women this is especially problematic, as it can provide ammunition for people who claim that trans women are just like drag queens, another kind of men in dresses. Some people suggest that acting is acting, and make the comparison of straight actors playing gay men or women (and vice versa), but the fact is that a trans woman is a woman, and a trans man is a man. Despite the increasing availability of trans performers, trans people are frequently played by cisgender actors, and far too often by performers of the wrong gender.

Here's a roughly chronological sampling of 21 times this has happened.

14 Of The Saddest "Futurama" Moments, Ranked From Least Devastating To Most Devastating

Futurama ended last night, leaving behind some pretty emotional episodes. Fair warning, though…this post contains references to Fry’s dog.

"Space Pilot 3000": When Fry wakes up in the future.

"Space Pilot 3000": When Fry wakes up in the future.

theinfosphere.org

Why it killed you: Futurama has always been pretty dark. It never let you go too far without reminding you exactly how scary the idea of waking up in the future would be. Fry gets used to it, but the very premise of the show is pretty sad when you think about it.

Level of devastating: A dull ache, like a brain slug sitting on top of your head.

"Near-Death Wish": The reveal that Professor Farnsworth's parents stayed up late at night with him every night growing up.

"Near-Death Wish": The reveal that Professor Farnsworth's parents stayed up late at night with him every night growing up.

upload.wikimedia.org

Why it killed you: If you didn't see this episode don't worry, it's from the newer seasons on Comedy Central, which aren't great. But it contains a wonderful moment where Professor Farnsworth discovers that his parents really did care about him all along.

Level of devastating: A beautiful gem of a scene, like the moon sapphires Al Gore is trying to keep away from dark wizards.

For all that's great about social media, there's a lot that's not so great. In fact, not only is it not great, it's annoying.

For all that's great about social media, there's a lot that's not so great. In fact, not only is it not great, it's annoying.

For example, one of my biggest social media pet peeves is people who constantly feel the need to brag about how wonderful their lives/jobs are on Facebook. Ugh!

But that gripe is only tied with another social media pet peeve: People who don't wish me a happy birthday on Facebook when I wished them a happy birthday on Facebook. What's up with that!?

What about all of you? What's your biggest social media pet peeve?
