Dead Alcoholic Writer Endorses Alcohol

Charles Bukowski definitely would not have approved this message.

Dewars today released this video ad, "Live True."

It uses some of writer/poet/postal clerk Charles Bukowski's poem/diatribe titled: "so you wanna be a writer?"

The voiceover actor seems to be trying to evoke Bukowski.
But as the Paris Review points out, he sounds nothing like Bukowski.

Also Dewars White Label would have been a bit pricey for Bukwoski.

As a commenter on Dangerous Minds stated: "mixing bukowski with that kind of fatuous glib pseudo-anthemic indie shite is like reciting Shelley over the Spice Girls."

Anyway, as the faux-Bukowski says: DON'T DO IT! Don't buy Dewars.

But do please add this pablum to the most offensive dead celebrity ads of all time.

The Real 1% Are People Spending $50 On Lunch

$

That’s what 1% of respondents said they typically spend on lunch outings in a new survey from Visa. Generally, most Americans go out to eat once or twice a week spending $10 per trip.

Mike Blake / Reuters

Lunch! The halftime in the game that is your office work life, the middle sibling of brothers breakfast and dinner, the center stage for sandwiches everywhere.

And an average expenditure of $936 a year for the 70% of Americans who said they go out for lunch, according to a new Visa survey of 1,005 people. (That's an entire 30% who said they just don't, though whether they have flexible views on what counts as breakfast is unclear.)

Americans going out to eat said they typically only do it once or twice a week, which might come as a surprise to urban-dwellers who feel they spend more time than that in lines for chopped-salad restaurants and food trucks. The survey showed that Southerners who go out for lunch spend $20 a week on average, while those in the Northeast spend $17.10. Men tend to shell out $21 a week while women are under the $15 mark.

But enough about the ordinaries. One percent of respondents said they spend more than $50 when they go out to lunch, more in the league of the Nobu and San Pietros of the world, which is far more delicious to consider. Spending that much twice a week lands you in the ballpark of $5,000 a year, which is why we have... corporate cards.

Baby Veronica Handed Over To Adoptive Parents After Long Custody Battle

A Cherokee girl, known as Baby Veronica, at the center of a four-year custody dispute was handed over to her adoptive parents on Monday night. Questions raised by the case over parental rights, tribal adoptions, heritage, and child welfare remain unresolved for many.

In this photo provided by the Capobianco Family, Veronica, center, poses for a photo with her adoptive parents, Melanie Capobinco, left, and Matt Capobianco, at an undisclosed location Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, during their return trip to Charleston, South Carolina.

AP

Hours after the Oklahoma Supreme Court decision dissolved a temporary court order leaving the child with her father and his family, 4-year-old Veronica was handed over to the Capobiancos, her adoptive parents. The Capobiancos and the girl's biological father, Dusten Brown, had fought for years over custody of the girl.

In 2009, Dusten Brown, an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation, was a soldier in the Army, stationed in his home state of Oklahoma, when his fiancee, Christy Maldonado, became pregnant. He said he would support her if she married him—then she broke up with him.

In a text message Maldonado told Brown he could either give up his parental rights or pay child support (although states rarely link parental rights to the payment of child support), The Los Angeles Times reported. He texted her back that he would give up his parental rights.

Unbeknownst to Brown, Maldonado picked the Capobiancos to adopt the child. The couple, Matt and Melanie Capobianco, were present for the baby's birth — Matt cut the umbilical cord — and they took custody of Veronica shortly after.

Four months later, days before deploying to Iraq, Brown signed a document formally giving up his parental rights to Maldonado, but when he realized he was agreeing to an adoption, he tried to stop it.

This July 21, 2013 file photo provided by Shannon Jones, attorney for Dusten Brown, shows Brown with his daughter, Veronica.

AP

What followed was a four-year legal battle, beginning in South Carolina courts, going to the U.S. Supreme Court, and ending up in Oklahoma courts.

Brown, a registered member of the Cherokee Nation, invoked the the federal Indian Child Welfare Act, which was passed in 1978 with the intent of reducing the high rates of Native American children being adopted by non-Native American families. Brown argued the tribe was never notified of the proposed adoption, as required by the law, and therefore the adoption could not proceed.

Veronica lived with her adoptive parents in South Carolina until she was 27 months, when Brown was awarded custody under the Indian Child Welfare Act by the South Carolina courts. The young girl then lived with Brown and his family in Cherokee Nation.

In June 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the Indian Child Welfare Act does not apply to this case, because Brown hadn't helped during the pregnancy or had physical custody of the girl when the adoption proceedings began.

A South Carolina court then finalized the Capobiancos' adoption of the girl and ordered Brown to hand Veronica over. In a final attempt, Brown turned to Oklahoma courts appealing orders certifying the adoption. After the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled it would not intervene in the case, the girl was transferred to the Capobiancos.

Brown is now facing extradition to South Carolina to face a charge of custodial interference for failing to hand over the girl.
