Americans Vote With Wallets To Say Thanksgiving Is The New Black Friday

$

As much as some people don’t like the idea of starting Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving Day, it absolutely drew the crowds.

Shannon Stapleton / Reuters

While Americans may tell pollsters that retailers should stay closed on Thanksgiving so that employees can spend time with their families, that didn't stop them from going out in droves yesterday and into the wee hours of the morning to snap up big discounts.

Wal-Mart said more than 22 million people showed up to its stores yesterday and today, with 10 million register transactions between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Target said it saw lines stretch for several blocks before its 8 p.m. openings. And Toys 'R' Us saw crowds gathering at 4:30 p.m. for items like the Disney Infinity and Skylanders video games and a hugging Elmo, before its 5 p.m. opening, according to Lisa Harnisch, general merchandising manager for toys at the retailer.

"Every year, we take a look at what time we should be opening, what other retailers are doing, and carefully review the competitive market and how consumers are changing their shopping habits," Harnisch said in a telephone interview with BuzzFeed on Friday morning. It was worth opening yesterday at 5 p.m. and may in fact help spread out the crowds throughout this holiday weekend, she said.

Retailers made headlines this year for opening on Thanksgiving Day in greater numbers than ever before. While it's something Wal-Mart has done in the past, Macy's, J.C. Penney and Kohl's didn't partake last year. Target wasn't new to the schedule this year either, but opened an hour earlier than in 2012. Mall stores such as Old Navy and Abercrombie & Fitch also opened Thursday night.

"We saw crowds lining up at a lot of our properties, one, two, three, hours beforehand," Mikael Thygesen, Simon Property Group's chief marketing officer, told BuzzFeed. "We had some people waiting to get into specific stores as early as 11 a.m., when the store was opening at 8 p.m. So, really enthusiastic crowds, big crowds, from the opening, and then continuing through the evening and early morning hours of today."

For those who didn't make it to stores in person, online sales just on Thanksgiving Day were also robust, with Adobe saying online purchasing surpassed $1 billion for the first time. IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark said Thanksgiving web sales rose 20% from 2012, with an average order value of $127.59.

Jonathan Alcorn / Reuters

The industry is gunning for sales with abandon this year, up against six fewer shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas and tepid consumer confidence. Oliver Chen, a retail analyst at Citigroup, noted that at stores last night, 50% off discounts were the norm, compared with 40% off in the past.

And the discounts didn't just start yesterday. Banana Republic, which was closed on Thanksgiving though other Gap Inc.-owned stores were open, actually started its "8 Days of Giving" holiday promotion on Nov. 23 — a contrast from a major promotion it ran last year between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

"Bringing it into the week prior to Thanksgiving was even more compelling and more useful, and much more relevant from a timeframe perspective," Catherine Sadler, Banana Republic's chief marketing officer, told BuzzFeed. Thanksgiving and Black Friday are "filled with pressure," something its giveaways of OPI nail polishes and Ghirardelli chocolates were meant to alleviate.

The concern among industry watchers, as noted by NPD Group, is that with sales taking place on Thanksgiving, Black Friday itself will draw sparser crowds — thus, negating the point of pulling sales forward in the first place. (IBISWorld projected Friday, Saturday, and Sunday sales of $38.7 billion this year, a 1.7% increase from last year.) The matching of discounts online also run the risk of "stealing a bit of the bricks-and-mortar drama," Citigroup's Chen said in a note.

"We saw a little bit of a lull in the very early morning hours, say, 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. because a lot of the folks were already out," Simon's Thygesen admitted. But, anecdotally, crowds did surge again at 8 a.m. this morning based on initial reports from Simon malls across the country, he said.

Harnisch of Toys 'R' Us is also not concerned, saying the toy retailer has "very aggressive" promotions planned for the rest of the season.

"This Sunday, in two days, is Dec. 1, so this season has snuck up on many consumers," she said. "The vast majority of the season is still ahead of us. From now until Christmas is so important, so we'll take it day by day."

Via Teegarden Veterinary Clinic PC / Facebook

After the tornados destroyed Jacob Montgomery's apartment in Washington, Ill., he says he combed through the debris multiple times, but could not find his dog, Dexter.

Nine days later, Montgomery's neighbor was looking for his missing cat with the group Rescuing Animals in Need when he spotted Dexter partially buried in debris where the apartment building once stood. The neighbor sent Montgomery a Facebook message.

"He said, 'I've got your dog right here,'" Montgomery said. "As soon as Dexter saw me, his tail started going."

Montgomery has worked as a military police officer with the Illinois Army National Guard for more than five years. While he is trained to respond to emergencies, he says he had never before been the victim of such a disaster.

The veterinarian who nursed Dexter back to health said that he is malnourished, but suffers no major injuries.

An Artist Says His Work Was Stolen For Movie Posters For Spike Lee's "Oldboy" And Lee Responded

He appealed to Spike Lee because he said the agency was horrible to him but it looks like the veteran director isn’t in the holiday spirit.

Via Facebook: juanluisgarcia

It's with sadness and hope that I write this open letter to you. I know you'll understand my story of an artist trying to make a dignified living. It's difficult and sometimes seems impossible because everyone wants you to work for free or for "exposure." Back in January I was approached by an ad agency that was hired to design posters for your new film, Oldboy. They wanted me to design some comps to present to you. They told me the budget was small and that they could only pay me peanuts for the comps but if you and the studio liked any of them I would then be compensated fairly through the licensing buyout fee. I know, I saw all of the warning signs but the idea of working for you and having my design represent your film blinded me. So I went along with it. Dealing with the agency was one the worst experiences of my life. It affected all aspects of my life from my marriage to my work and my health. I was taken advantage of, lead on, lied to, manipulated, and harassed for over two months while I put all I had into designing the comps. I wanted to impress you and I guess I did.

Via reddit.com

The agency told me, "Congratulations, Spike loved a couple of the posters. Yours is going to be the key art.", and I was thrilled. But when it came time to negotiate the licensing buyout fee the agency made an insultingly low offer. But they said that the important thing wasn't the money it was the exposure and potential for more work. After thinking about it long and hard I had to decline. I tried to negotiate but they refused. I make the same amount of money in a single day as a photo assistant as what they offered and I had worked on these almost exclusively for two months. Plus there was still more work to be done so I had to refuse.

Via reddit.com

While Garcia declined to work with the agency any longer, he posted his version and the official poster to show the similarities.

Everything that happened on a crazy three-day trip to Botswana.

Backstory: I spent three nights in the Duba Plains in the Okavango Delta region in Northern Botswana with Dereck and Beverley Joubert. The two have been making films about lions for 30 years, and their newest one, Game of Lions, premieres on Nat Geo Wild on Dec. 1. It was my first trip to Africa and it basically changed my life.

8 Terrifying Facts About Doctors You'll Wish You Didn't Know

Auburn Upsets Alabama In A Finish You Won't Soon Forget

$

You’ve got to be kidding me!

Well, the 2013 Iron Bowl certainly lived up to the hype. With a tie game entering the fourth quarter, the momentum was starting to shift towards the Auburn sideline and after pinning Alabama deep in its own territory, the Tigers were in a great position to flip the field. But then AJ McCarron connected with Amari Cooper for a 99-yard touchdown pass to take the lead.

And with a late opportunity to potentially put the game away, Alabama's field goal attempt was blocked — the third miss for kicker Cade Foster.

So with just under three minutes to go, Auburn marched down the field and scored on this 39-yard touchdown pass to Sammie Coates to tie the game.

And that's when things became really interesting. With seven seconds left, T.J. Yeldon rushed for 24 yards, before stepping out of bounds as time expired.
