Winter is coming. Pretty soon.

HBO has finally unveiled a launch date for the eagerly awaited fourth season of Game of Thrones, based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R.R. Martin, which will kick off on Sunday, April 6 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. (Viewers looking to get a sneak peek at the new season can check out a new Season 4 trailer this Sunday evening before the launch of HBO's superlative new mystery thriller True Detective.)

After the deaths of several major characters last season (the Red Wedding!), the cast for Season 4 of Game of Thrones will include Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kit Harington, Natalie Dormer, Maisie Williams, and Sophie Turner.

The same night will see the launches of Season 3 of Veep at 10 p.m. and HBO's new Mike Judge comedy Silicon Valley at 10:30.

In other HBO-related news, the network announced the upcoming fifth season of Boardwalk Empire will be the show's last.

"We're thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of Boardwalk Empire," said executive producer/co-creator Terence Winter in a statement. "After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion."

As Egyptians prepare to vote on whether to accept a new constitution, cartoons capture the mass hysteria and mild criticism that is permissible to share.

Egypt will vote next week in a constitutional referendum, the country's second attempt to adopt a constitution since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak in 2011 (the first attempt, under now ousted president Mohamed Morsi, didn't end well). The drafting process has been messy — and further complicated by the military-backed government's crackdown on those who oppose it.

The constitution is by all indicators expected to pass. According to a recent poll, 74% of Egyptians surveyed will vote yes in the referendum (though 59% of respondents also said they had not yet read the document.) These numbers are likely reflective of a concerted campaign by the government, military, and other political and business elites to push the public towards voting yes. Supporters of the deposed Islamist president have responded in a similar vein with a vote no campaign, though they have fewer resources.

Cartooning and satire in Egypt has a storied tradition, often serving as a mask for political criticism. Here's a look at cartoons from Egypt's newspapers that capture some of the hysteria, fatigue, and fear (that is permissible to print) surrounding Egypt's constitutional referendum.

After numerous old photos of frozen lighthouses began circulating on the internet this week, BuzzFeed went to find out how the record cold spell really affected a Lake Michigan landmark.

This is the Grand Haven Front Lighthouse, located on Lake Michigan. It was completely covered in ice Thursday after bitter cold left the region paralyzed.

Spectacular NASA Image Captures "Hand Of God"

A picture of an exploding star looks incredibly similar to an x-ray of a human hand.

The NASA astronomers who captured this incredible image of an exploding star nearly 17,000 light-years away have nicknamed it "The Hand of God." NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission described the phenomenon, known as a pulsar wind nebula, in a statement on their website:

It's powered by the leftover, dense core of a star that blew up in a supernova explosion. The stellar corpse, called PSR B1509-58, or B1509 for short, is a pulsar: it rapidly spins around, seven times per second, firing out a particle wind into the material around it -- material that was ejected in the star's explosion. These particles are interacting with magnetic fields around the material, causing it to glow with X-rays. The result is a cloud that, in previous images, looked like an open hand. The pulsar itself can't be seen in this picture, but is located near the bright white spot.
One of the big mysteries of this object is whether the pulsar particles are interacting with the material in a specific way to make it look like a hand, or if the material is in fact shaped like a hand.

The image was captured using the NuSTAR telescope, which was launched in June 2012 to "perform deep observations of the extragalactic sky."
