The “Girls” Effect Is In Full Swing At Sundance

$

This year’s festival showcased a bunch of movies about twentysomething women in free fall. But, like Dunham’s HBO comedy, race is still an issue that’s not on the table.

Jenny Slate in Obvious Child.

Chris Teague

At Sundance this year, there have been more than a few movies where female protagonists are very much muddling their way through their twenties in a way that feels incredibly honest and real. They're confused and charming; they go on benders after they break up with their boyfriends; they have sex with strangers; they make mistakes. They're Obvious Child's Donna (Jenny Slate), a 28-year-old stand-up comedian and bookstore employee who gets pregnant from a one-night stand with a hot, preppy guy from Vermont who totally has his shit together. They're Happy Christmas' Jenny (Anna Kendrick), a 27-year-old who moves into her brother's basement where she raids the intact tiki bar on what seems to be a nightly basis; they're Laggies' Megan (Keira Knightley), a 28-year-old in a much-extended adolescence who moves in with a teenager and her father.

If it feels slightly odd to be celebrating women who in no way have their shit together, that's probably because until very recently there were essentially two tropes for twentysomething women in Hollywood comedies: You either got to play the bland (and usually blonde), uptight foil to Judd Apatow's wacky band of man-children (Knocked Up is the paradigmatic example), or you got to be a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, completely wrapped up in your whimsical Anthropologie catalog of a life (see under: 500 Days of Summer). Both were male projections of the role women should play in their lives: either mommy-type saviors, or porcelain doll fetish objects. These were not movies about or even really for women.

Chloë Moretz and Keira Knightley in Laggies.

Barbara Kinney

These Sundance films, on the other hand, are normalizing and validating the real, lived experiences of young women. Perhaps we have Lena Dunham and Girls to thank in part for the growing acceptance of films with imperfect young female protagonists who feel almost too true to life, which is probably why some men still seem uncomfortable with them. It's no surprise that two of the three Sundance movies were written and directed by women — Obvious Child by Gillian Robespierre, and Laggies by Lynn Shelton (who directed) and Andrea Seigel (who wrote it). Happy Christmas, while directed by a man (Joe Swanberg), was almost entirely ad-libbed by the cast, which, in addition to Kendrick and Swanberg (as her brother), included the wonderful Melanie Lynskey as Swanberg's wife and, as Kendrick's best friend, none other than...Dunham.

This in itself feels like a huge shift for Hollywood, a place where change happens so slowly you could actually die while waiting around for it (that's not a real saying, but it feels like it should be). And of course, Sundance is a festival of independent films; the general public will probably never see many of the movies shown here. (At the festival, Laggies had been picked up by A24, as of this writing. Happy Christmas will be distributed by Magnolia Pictures and Paramount; it will be released this summer.) Perhaps that's why they're able to validate and normalize a lifestyle that, to studio executives, is still seen as "niche."

“War’s finally started,” wrote one opposition lawmaker. “Laws don’t apply anymore.”

Clad in helmets and gas masks, wielding sticks and shields, and chanting "Re-vo-lu-tion!," protesters in Kiev, the capital, rushed a police bus blocking their way to parliament and set it on fire with Molotov cocktails, local media reported.

Earlier, up to 100,000 people gathered on Independence Square, the Maidan, for a weekly protest against President Viktor Yanukovych. Ukrainians have gathered at the Maidan for two months since Yanukovych backed out of a deal with the EU in November.

Lance Bass’ Failed Journey To Space Made Him Fear For His Life

“I’m so glad that God made me gay, because I don’t know if I would’ve been so open-minded, if I was just a normal straight white guy from Mississippi.” Ahead of the Sochi Olympics, the former NSYNC singer on his new documentary and Russian homophobia.

Lance Bass, the 34-year-old former member of NSYNC, has expanded his résumé from boy band bass singer to executive producer. His harrowing new documentary, Kidnapped for Christ, just premiered at Slamdance this past weekend; the film captures the plight of three American teens sent to a Christian reform school in the Dominican Republic.

"All of them are sent there for different reasons," a visibly energized Bass told BuzzFeed over lunch in Park City, Utah. "One is drugs, and one for just not getting along with their parents. And then there's this guy, David, who was gay, and his parents were convinced that he needed to be sent away so they could change him."

David's story lurks at the heart of the documentary; a clean-cut, smart kid, one who never got into trouble, was taken out of his senior year of high school and shipped abroad to "cure" him. For Bass, David's story is all too familiar, as he knows exactly what it's like to hide who you truly are.

"I was very much like David," Bass said. "The first memory I ever had was that I was attracted to boys, and not to girls. But I knew at a very young age that I had to hide that, thank god."

He managed to hide his sexuality up until 2006, when he made the decision to publicly come out on the cover of People magazine. And prior to that point, the only people who actually knew he was gay were his close friends.

"My friends knew I was gay," he said. "I wasn't hiding that at all. But my family still didn't know in the beginning."

Bass recently published a letter that his mother, a devout Southern Baptist, wrote to her church, in which she describes the "miracle" of her son coming out of the closet. In the letter, his mother, Diane, describes the journey of finding out her son was gay and realizing that the true Christian thing to do would be to accept and love him unconditionally.

"My mom cried for about a week," Bass said, after he came out to her. "What I learned then about Southern mothers is that they're not against gay people, and they're not against being gay. They're against half of the world hating you. That's what scares them the most. They just know how much hatred their child is going to have to go through."

Bass experienced that hatred firsthand back in 2002, when he was training with the Russian cosmonaut program to be the youngest person ever to fly in space. He spent three months at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, and that was enough time to figure out how the Russians at the center felt about the LGBT community.

"I was so scared the whole entire time that they would figure out that I was gay," he said of his time at the program. "I was always worried that they were going to figure it out at any moment, and kill me. Just come in the middle of the night and kill me."

It's no secret that Russia is a scary place for LGBT people right now. For years, gay pride parades have been met with violent protestors, anti-LGBT laws have been passed, and even public figures, like Russian celebrity Ivan Okhlobystin, have made anti-gay comments without fear of repercussion.

"It's really sad, I grew to love Russia," said Bass. "I lived in old communist Russia — I wasn't in Moscow — I was in the 1960s real Russia. So I really got to know them and appreciate their culture, and even then I knew how much they hated gays. That was one of the first things I realized, was how much they made fun of it. It scared me how much they talked about it, and how offended they were by gays."

One moment that sticks out for Bass in particular was during his medical testing before the training even began. "They had to give me a colonoscopy to test everything," he explained. "They did it. I was completely awake. It was very barbaric — their medical testing is very barbaric — and I'm sitting there and they're doing the procedure with lots of doctors in the room. So I have tears coming down my eyes, because it hurt so badly, and they all start laughing. And I asked my translator, 'Why are they laughing?' and they said, 'Well, they know now that you're not gay.' And they were all laughing because my colonoscopy hurt so much, and they were all happy because I wasn't gay."

Lindsay Lohan Showed Up At Sundance Looking "Mean Girls" Good

And announced her new film Inconceivable .

Lindsay Lohan held a last-minute press conference at the Sundance Film Festival on Monday. The gathering was small and intimate, and the cameras seemed to outnumber the people.

It was Lohan's first time at Sundance, and she was there with Randall Emmett, of Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films, to announce their new film project Inconceivable. EFO Films' previous projects include End of Watch with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anna Kendrick, and the upcoming film Lone Survivor with Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, and Eric Bana.

The Inconceivable press conference was also filmed for the 27-year-old actress' forthcoming Oprah documentary series, meaning that everyone in attendance had to sign release forms agreeing to be on camera, or else they weren't allowed to stay.

The space was only available for 20 minutes, and the notoriously tardy Lohan stepped on stage just five minutes late.

Erin La Rosa for BuzzFeed

Emmett started the conference by saying, "We are up here today to announce a new movie that we're funding and producing alongside Lindsay, called Inconceivable. The movie will start shooting in March, and Lindsay and I just felt that coming up to Sundance and being among the community up here to announce an independent film is a really special place."

Emmett then opened up the mic to Lohan, and asked her to talk about the project. "It's really nice to be part of something like this again. This is something that I've been aspiring to get back for a long time now," Lohan said. "I fell in love with the script, and I contacted Randall, and kind of harassed him to make it happen. But it's just a really interesting story. It's a psychological thriller about a woman who's kind of on a journey to reclaim something that was lost of hers. And it gets a bit dark, but it's a really interesting twist, and it's something that I'm really looking forward to doing sooner rather than later."

Randall revealed that Lohan would be meeting with directors for the film, and described the process of how the actress discovered the script. "It was a simple process," he said. "She read the script, she called, and she said, 'We're making this movie. Are you in or out?' I said, 'I'm in.'"

"I don't think you had a choice to say you weren't in," Lohan joked. "I know where you live!"

Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals "Sherlock" Secrets And Talks About The Show's Future

The internet’s favorite actor talked about the joys that’ve come from breathing life into Sherlock Holmes and how long he can envision playing the character.

While the PBS anthology series Masterpiece is the home to countless living British acting legends, the real jewel in the franchise's crown has been the sheer volume of stars that have emerged from their programs. And no one more so than breakout Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch.

Not too long ago, the Londoner was a rising star looking for his big break. That came — and then some — in 2010 when he stepped out of the sleuth's iconic Baker Street address for the first time. Subsequent seasons, and a smattering of high-profile movie roles, have turned Cumberbatch into one of the world's most popular actors, both online and in the entertainment industry.

On Jan. 20, the day after the U.S. premiere (which drew 4 million viewers), Cumberbatch appeared at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in support of Season 3 of Sherlock. Since the event is closed to the public, here is everything you missed, from his clothes to his quotes!

Getty Images

Let it be known that the fans swarmed the hotel in anticipation of his arrival (a rarity despite the A-list actors who've come through TCA this year, like Matthew McConaughey and Julia Roberts). When asked about the impact Sherlock has had on his life, particularly these fans, Cumberbatch replied, "It's extraordinary."

"I think a lot of it comes with who [Sherlock] is," he continued. "He's a very iconic figure. I feel not an onerous sense of responsibility, but it has to be acknowledged and I feel gratitude that they're supportive and loyal and committed to something I love doing. And a character I love playing. So, it means a lot to me."

Cumberbatch revealed the fan that caught him most by surprise was Harrison Ford. During a recent joint appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the Star Wars icon revealed how much he enjoys Sherlock. "That was a genuine shock," Cumberbatch said. "He's a phenomenal actor, my hero, so for [him] to know you and say [he's a] big fan floored me."

But there is something more important to Cumberbatch than the fans' unbridled enthusiasm. "It also means a lot to me that families will sit down together Sunday nights around the TV – that's what I really get a kick from," he said, adding that another wonderful byproduct of the show's popularity is that it's caused the sales of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books to skyrocket.

Mid 1970s: The Choom Gang Years

Growing up in Hawaii, Barack Obama belonged to a group of friends who were known as the "Choom Gang." Choom is a verb which means “to smoke marijuana.” According to David Maraniss’ book Barack Obama: The Story, the young Obama popularized a smoking trend known as “TA” (short for “total absorption") and “roof hits,” where the group would smoke with all the car windows rolled up to not let any smoke escape. Obama was also known to cut into other people's turn when a joint was being passed around and yelling "interception."

2004: "I think the War on Drugs has been an utter failure.... but I'm not somebody who believes in the legalization of marijuana."

Speaking to students at Northwestern University when running for Senate in 2004, then-State Senator Obama said: "I think the War on Drugs has been an utter failure. I think we need to rethink and decriminalize our marijuana laws. But I'm not somebody who believes in the legalization of marijuana. I do believe we need to rethink how we're operating in the drug wars – we're not doing a good job."

Speaking in Iowa in 2007, Obama said he would support medical marijuana if doctor's suggested it was the best care, but had concerns about folks growing their own calling it a "slippery slope."

“My attitude is if the science and doctors suggest that the best palliative care, the best way to relief pain and suffering is through medical marijuana, then that’s something I’m open to and because there’s no difference between that and morphine when it comes to just giving people relief from pain. But I want to do it under strict guidelines. I want to make sure that it is prescribed in the same way that pain killer or other palliative drugs would be prescribed. I'm concerned about folks just kinda growing their own and saying it's for medical purposes because that's kind of a slippery slope their."

Illinois Lawmaker Introduces Bill To Repeal State Marriage Equality Law

Supporters of marriage equality say the Republican’s bill is “not going to go anywhere.”

Sen. Kyle McCarter speaking on the Illinois Senate floor Feb. 14, 2013.

Tony Merevick/BuzzFeed

A Republican state senator in Illinois introduced legislation Tuesday to repeal the state's new marriage equality law, which takes effect this June.

But with a Senate and House controlled by Democrats — who just voted in favor of marriage equality in November — and a governor who pressed for equal marriage rights in the state, advocates say Sen. Kyle McCarter is simply playing to his base of conservative Republicans.

McCarter introduced Senate Bill 2637 to repeal the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, which passed last fall, and amend the state's marriage statute to redefine marriage as between one man and one woman.

"[McCarter] knows it's not going to go anywhere," said Sen. Heather Steans (D-Chicago), who was he chief sponsor of the marriage equality bill in the Senate. "He's just doing this to show his constituents."

Last October, the Illinois House narrowly passed the marriage equality law, but the Senate approved the legislation with a wide margin — both last February in a 34-21 vote and again in November to concur with the House in a 32-21 vote.

"This is just politics," said Anthony Martinez, executive director of The Civil Rights Agenda, an LGBT rights group. "It's an election year in Illinois and whenever that happens there's always legislators who introduce legislation that will really go nowhere, but appeals to their base and I think that's exactly what he's done here."

Martinez said he has been monitoring new measures introduced that would attempt to set back pro-LGBT legislation.

"We have seen in the past with the civil unions act and the gay rights amendment to the Illinois Human Rights Act that there tends to be attacks on gains made by the LGBT community," he said. "We are checking to make sure that if these bills are introduced that they are addressed and that we fight against them."

Messages were left with McCarter's district and Capitol office seeking comment.

Warren Buffett To Insure $1 Billion Prize For Perfect NCAA Bracket

$

Berkshire Hathaway will insure a $1 billion prize to anyone who accurately picks the winner of every NCAA tournament game this March as part of a competition from mortgage lender Quicken Loans.

Via facebook.com

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway will insure a $1 billion prize from mortgage lender Quicken Loans to anyone who correctly predicts the winner of every NCAA tournament game in a contest it's holding this March.

Quicken Loans said today that an entrant with "the perfect bracket" in its upcoming contest can either get $1 billion in 40 annual installments of $25 million, or a $500 million lump sum, which will be shared if there is more than one winning bracket. By insuring the challenge, Berkshire, which Buffett is the CEO and chairman of, will backstop the payments from the Detroit-based mortgage-lender.

"Millions of people play brackets every March, so why not take a shot at becoming $1 billion richer for doing so," Buffett said in the statement. "While there is no simple path to success, it sure doesn't get much easier than filling out a bracket online. To quote a commercial from one of my companies, I'd dare say it's so easy to enter that even a caveman can do it."

The mortgage lender also said it will give $100,000 each to the top 20 bracket-makers for remodeling, buying, or refinancing a home.

But before you start counting the dollars and humming Travie McCoy's "Billionaire," the odds of filling out a perfect bracket are actually 1 in 9.2 quintillion, a nine with 18 zeroes behind it, according to USA Today. If you know something about NCAA basketball, that makes your odds slightly better...to 1 in 128 billion. Still dismal. (Quicken Loans says online that the odds of winning the grand prize are roughly 1 in 4.3 billion.)

The Hartford Courant noted last year that among the 8.15 million brackets submitted in ESPN.com's Men's Tournament Challenge last year, only 47 got all of the Final Four teams right.

Quicken Loans said the contest will start March 3.
