Since NASCAR’s season opener was delayed due to severe weather, Fox aired a replay of last year’s race when Jimmie Johnson won and a lot of fans on Twitter thought it was live.

During Sunday's season opener, severe rain shut the race down at the International Speedway after 38 out of the 200 laps had been completed.

View From Space At Night Shows Huge Difference Between North And South Korea

International Space Station video taken on Jan. 30, 2014 reveals a stark contrast between the neighboring Koreas.

North Korea is almost completely dark compared to neighboring South Korea and China. The darkened land appears as if it were a patch of water joining the Yellow Sea to the Sea of Japan. Its capital city, Pyongyang, appears like a small island, despite a population of 3.26 million (as of 2008). The light emission from Pyongyang is equivalent to the smaller towns in South Korea.

Authorities Back Down From Planned Purge Of Homeless From Subways

The MTA announced and then suspended an initiative to remove the growing number of homeless from the subway. A homeless advocacy group calls it a “substantial victory.”

The MTA and NYPD announced a joint effort to clear the homeless out of subways. The announcement came in response to an increasing amount of the homeless population seeking shelter in subways from the harsh winter.

The MTA and NYPD announced a joint effort to clear the homeless out of subways. The announcement came in response to an increasing amount of the homeless population seeking shelter in subways from the harsh winter.

The plan was set to begin at 3 a.m. the morning of Feb. 24, specifically focusing on the E train in order to clear out the homeless before rush hour. A representative of the MTA stated that "We are not doing this to be cruel to them. [Homelessness] is not going to get solved overnight, but we are working on it together with police officers."

On Feb. 21, three days before the sweep was to be enacted, the MTA announced that they were going to suspend the sweep because "it's been portrayed as something it isn't."

The MTA's statement is likely in reference to the swift and vocal protests raised by groups like Picture The Homeless. With no police presence on the subway Monday morning, many PTH representatives called the suspension a "substantial victory."

The MTA's statement is likely in reference to the swift and vocal protests raised by groups like Picture The Homeless . With no police presence on the subway Monday morning, many PTH representatives called the suspension a "substantial victory."

Representatives from the organization were on hand for the planned 3 a.m. rollout at both the World Trade Center E platform and the Jamaica Station E platform, just in case the MTA and NYPD reneged on their announced suspension. (The homeless favor the E train due to its relative shortness. Rush hour starts later on a train like the E as opposed a train like the N where rush hour starts earlier due to it spanning from Coney Island to Astoria in Queens).

Darlene Bryant, a representative of Picture The Homeless who was also once spent time among the homeless that ride the subways, said that the organization was distrustful of the police, citing events like the 1988 riot in Tompkins Square Park as being indicative of their untrustworthiness.

The group is also concerned about newly appointed police commissioner William Bratton. He was police commissioner for a brief period of time beginning in 1994 under former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and presided over similarly controversial policing of the homeless that occupied the subway.

Bryant also accused the city of being more willing to "pay to place the homeless in a shelter rather than help them get into a real home," noting that the homeless that slept in the subway didn't go to the shelters because they are "nasty, degrading, not safe, and there's no room."

Activists In Uganda Prepare For Fallout Of Anti-LGBT Law

0
0

The world begins to react. But the U.S. has yet to detail what it will do.

Stringer / Reuters

Ugandan LGBT activist Claire Byarygaba decided to lock her door and avoid work today after Uganda's president signed into law a harsh anti-gay bill that western countries have strongly condemned and LGBT rights groups say calls for a review of Uganda's international agreements and aid programs.

"We are very worried about our safety," Byarygaba, who works at the Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights and Constitutional Law, told BuzzFeed by phone from Kampala. "It's one thing for people to threaten you, and it's another thing to have a law that discriminates against you and prosecutes you."

"The president has basically declared war with the west," she added.

In a televised ceremony on Monday, President Yoweri Museveni signed into law a controversial bill that imposes a lifetime jail sentence for homosexuality and criminalizes those who promote LGBT rights, among other measures.

The Ugandan parliament passed the law in Dec. 2013, after considering several versions of the bill, which was first proposed in 2009. An earlier version made homosexuality punishable by death.

Museveni signed the bill after months of conflicting statements, as he appeared to waffle between signing the bill, which has wide political support in Uganda, or vetoing it, as the US and other western countries have demanded. Uganda already had some of the world's toughest LGBT restrictions, in place since colonial British rule, and the government often equates anti-LGBT and anti-western rhetoric.

"Can somebody be homosexual simply by nature? The answer is no," Museveni told reporters as he signed the legislation. For a while, he had sought "scientific reviews" to investigate whether homosexuality was innate or a choice, arguing that the former did not "deserve" to be punished. Activists said it was another means of waffling.

Museveni warned critics on Monday. "I advise friends from the West not to make this an issue because if they make it an issue the more they will lose," he said. "This is social imperialism. To impose social values of one group on our society."

Human rights groups and world leaders from EU Foreign Affairs Representative Catherine Ashton to South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu harshly criticized the move. The White House issued a statement calling the bill a "step backward" for Ugandan human rights and said it complicated US-Uganda relations. Secretary of State John Kerry called for an "internal review of our relationship with the Government of Uganda to ensure that all dimensions of our engagement, including assistance programs, uphold our anti-discrimination policies and principles and reflect our values."
