FDA Proposes Including "Added Sugar" To Nutrition Labels

$

For the first time in more than two decades, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is unveiling new nutrition labels. The labels will put calorie counts in large type and include portion amounts that reflect the how much Americans eat now.

Food and Drug Administration

Federal health officials have said portion size changes are necessary to reflect the reality of the American diet. Now a 20-ounce bottle of soda will be considered one serving instead of 2.5 servings and ice cream serving sizes will increase from a half-cup to one cup, which more accurately reflect how much people really consume.

Another significant change will be a separate line for sugars that are manufactured and added to food, which public health experts say has contributed to America's obesity problem.

The federal government started requiring nutrition labels in the early 1990s and has not changed them significantly since. A line for trans fats, however, was added in 2006, which addressed a health issue that people were just beginning to understand at the time.

The changes in the nutrition labels are intended to make it easier for people to read and understand, and will include putting the calorie count in really big font to make sure people know that's very important.

Also, the inclusion of Vitamin A and B will become optional, while Vitamin D and potassium, which are important for bone health, blood pressure, and the immune system, will be added.

The new labels will be open to public input for 90 days. It will take several months after that before the changes will happen and then the FDA will give businesses another two years to actually alter their labels.

The FDA's Deputy Commissioner for Foods Michael R. Taylor estimates it will cost about $2 billion for companies to implement the changes, but that it will save $30 billion eventually in health benefits.

If "Dawson's Creek" Had Used Suggested Hashtags

#Jawson and #Jacey and #Jougie, oh my.

Today's hit teen soap Pretty Little Liars may have mastered the art (or annoyance) of hashtags that pop up in the corners of your television screen, instructing you what to tweet as you watch — #RedCoat, #Spoby, #AliIsAlive, etc. — but in the late '90s and early '00s, a far less murderous or tech-savvy (but equally incestuous) series, Dawson's Creek, ruled the airwaves.

Though Twitter didn't exist at the time of the Dawson-Joey-Pacey love triangle or the complexities of life in Capeside, below, imagine a world in which The WB could've guided our 140-character thoughts with the mere press of a pound sign.

Photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) made a survey of the Russian Empire with the support of Tsar Nicholas II. He used a special camera with red, green, and blue filters, which allowed them to be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns that nearly show their true color.

You don’t want any of these people sitting near you right now. But they are, aren’t they…

The Gossip.

The Gossip.

Did Dave go out for a drink last night with Sharon from HR? Is Kevin from accounts having marital difficulties? The Gossip doesn't just know: The Gossip wants to tell everyone all about it.

How to handle them: You may find their juicy tit-bits enticing, but they're one of the most dangerous colleagues out there. The Gossip specialises in making private lives public, so think like a public figure. Preferably Frank Underwood.

Keep The Gossip at a safe distance. When the shit hits the fan - and it will - you don't want people thinking you've been spreading rumours about them. At the same time, you need to know if things are being said about you. So when you need to engage, LEAVE NO TRACE. Do it verbally, not over email or Facebook.

Captain Delegation.

Captain Delegation.

This person has an interesting conception of "team work." Captain Delegation's version of collaboration involves asking you to do their job while they get on with the important task of watching football videos on YouTube and playing Flash games in their browser. They may even be less senior than you, but still, if you don't ask, you don't get, right? So they do ask, approximately 135 times a day.

How to handle them: Shut. It. Down. You're a bit busy. Even when you're not a bit busy and they only want you to pass them a stapler. The minute you show weakness, the precedent will have been set, and Captain Delegation is about to make your life very hard indeed.

The Credit Claimer.

The Credit Claimer.

"I've just done an Amazing Thing. Isn't it Amazing? Look how Amazing it is. Oh yeah, so-and-so helped out a bit, but basically it was my work. Goddamnit why has someone let down my car tyres again?"

How to Handle Them: Don't get dragged down to The Credit Claimer's level. The trouble is they've put you in a double bind: if you suddenly announce that Well Actually I'll Have You Know I Did Quite A Bit, suddenly you're the massive douche. Play the long game, don't be pushy and if the opportunity for a subtle way to make sure people recognise your input crops up, take it. Also, let down all their car tyres.

The Moaner.

The Moaner.

Bastard offspring, weirdly, of The Gossip. It's just so enticing. If there's one thing that's more satisfying than gossiping about the people you work with, it's bitching about them. WHY won't someone fix the toilet light? WHERE is our promotion? HOW can that guy get paid so much for doing nothing all day?

The trouble is, if you spend too much time hanging round this character, you suddenly find that you've talked yourself out of any enjoyment you might once have had for the job and you're the biggest complainer in the office. Weirdly, none of your bosses have ever heard The Moaner complain about the job.

How to Handle Them: You're not the collaborator. You're their tender supportive pal. Yes, it IS hard. Have a hug. There there. Remember, you are a lion. This lion, to be precise.

Ugandan President Hails Closer Ties With Russia After U.S. Criticizes Anti-Gay Bill

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni held up closer ties to Russia — which has successfully bucked western outrage over its law against "homosexual propaganda" — as a possible response to U.S. pressure to reject its own Anti-Homosexuality Bill.

Museveni made the remarks on Friday, Feb. 21, responding to President Barack Obama's statement that the bill would "complicate" the relationship between Uganda and the U.S. Museveni signed the law, which imposes up to a lifetime prison sentence for homosexuality and criminalizes LGBT rights advocacy, on Monday.

"The Russians work with us, they don't mix up their politics with our politics, they just do what we agree on," Museveni said during a visit to the Ugandan Air Force's headquarters in Entebbe to commission a Russian-built Sukhoi-30 military flight simulator. Apparently referring to Obama, Museveni continued, "If you see someone who goes into other people's homes and starts giving instructions — do this, do that — you know there is something wrong with him...This is my home, you have got your home. you go back to your house."

Museveni has been pursuing military ties to Russia since at least 2011, when his government reportedly ordered six Sukhoi fighter jets for more than $700 million. The purchase caused an uproar in Uganda, because Museveni went over the heads of lawmakers to use Bank of Uganda funds to acquire the aircraft.

Museveni visited Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in December of 2012, just after appointing a special military attaché to his country's embassy to Russia. Ugandan media reported that Museveni was recently "given Russia's highest public award for being one of the eminent military-political leaders in Africa."

If the showdown over the Anti-Homosexuality Bill does lead Uganda to pursue closer ties with Moscow, it will be a dramatic illustration of how Putin's aggressive defense of his country's anti-gay legislation could reshape geopolitics. He defied western outrage in the run up to the Olympics, possibly emboldening leaders in other countries to follow his example. Russia has the military and financial means to make more of a symbolic gesture of support if it suits its interests.

"Putin is being strongly and proudly homophobic with an aggressive global posture that African leaders were more reluctant to take before this," said Mark Bromley of the Council for Global Equality, which lobbies the U.S. government to defend LGBT rights in foreign policy. "He's seeing this as a new non-aligned movement of proudly homophobic leaders, he's creating more political space for countries that might have looked for a more diplomatic way out in the past".
