From 1603, London parish clerks began to collect health-related population data in order to monitor plague deaths, publishing the London Bills of Mortality on a weekly basis. John Graunt amalgamated 50 years of information from the bills in Natural and Political Observations on the Bills of Mortality (1662), producing the first known tables of public health data.

Eberhard Werner Happel's "Early Ocean Currents", 1685.

This unusual map of 1685 illustrates ocean currents as understood at the time based on the observations of explorers and mariners. Though necessarily conjectural in many ways, it highlights the remarkable effort made by early cartographers to make sense of an accumulation of data from such reports without the visualisation tools we have today.

Florence Nightingale's "Rose Diagram", 1854.

This the data from Florence Nightingale’s "rose diagram". It shows not only the lasting relevance of Nightingale’s diagram as a visual icon, but also demonstrates how data can be pictured in different ways. It's a form of the pie chart now known as the polar area diagram, and was meant to illustrate seasonal sources of patient mortality in the military field hospital she managed.

John Snow's "On the Mode of Communication of Cholera", 1855

Snow was a sceptic of the then-dominant miasma theory that stated that diseases such as cholera and bubonic plague were caused by pollution or a noxious form of "bad air". The germ theory of disease had not yet been developed, so Snow did not understand the mechanism by which the disease was transmitted. This map didn't conclusively prove a pump was responsible, but he did convince the council to disable it.

Because grown men throwing temper tantrums may soon be endangered.

In a preseason game Monday, Major League Baseball saw its first use of the expanded instant replay system.

This is great news!

But there is also reason to mourn.

Because the advent of instant replay could mean a scarcity of disputed calls, and therefore, epic manager ejections. So let's take this moment to appreciate some of the great manager meltdowns of the past.

Lou Piniella - June 2, 2007

One of the all time greats at blowing up, Lou Piniella even has a signature move -- kicking his hat around the field. Which he enthusiastically employs here. This was his first ejection as Cubs manager, and the crowd is immediately behind him, launching their own hats and assorted detritus onto the field in solidarity.

Best Part: The groundskeeping crew swarming the field to collect the debris at the end.

End result: Lou's Cubs lost, 3-5.

Joe Mikulik - June 25, 2006

The minor leagues are known for having some of the best manager meltdowns around. Frequently, minor league managers will “get their money’s worth” from their ejections in an attempt to raise the profile of themselves or their teams. Here, Joe Mikulik just plain goes ballistic, throwing bases, covering home plate with dirt, throwing bats on the field and more, all while the home team sound system taunts Mikulik with a stream of music and movie clips (the "Who's On First" routine matches shockingly well).

Best moment: After Mikulik throws bats out on the field, the poor bat boy takes a step toward them to clean them up, only to jump back from Mikulik’s re-emergence from the dugout.

End result: The Tourists lost, 2-5.

On Thursday morning Gen. Jeffrey A. Sinclair will plead guilty to three criminal charges, his attorney Richard Scheff said.

Sinclair will admit to having improper relationships with two female Army officers and to committing adultery with his junior officer, which is a crime in the military. He will also admit to violating orders by possessing pornography in Afghanistan.

The 51-year-old general's court-martial began on Tuesday and is one of only a few such proceedings against a high-ranking U.S. military officer. Sinclair, a father of two, still faces five other sexual assault charges.

A junior officer, who was his lover during deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, accuses him of forcing her twice to perform oral sex and threatening to kill her and her family if she revealed their three-year affair.

The defense will argue that the relationship was consensual and that the junior officer pursued allegations to avoid being prosecuted herself for adultery.

A total of 20 journalists have been accused of joining or aiding a terrorist organization and spreading false news in the country.

Three Al Jazeera journalists were among the six defendants on trial for allegedly supporting or belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood, which was designated as a terrorist organization, at Cairo's Tora Prison on Wednesday, March 5.

The high-profile case has sparked a global outcry over the restrictions on the freedom of press by Egypt's military-backed interim government.

Egypt has been ranked the third deadliest destination for journalists in 2013 by the Committee to Protect Journalists. At least five journalists have been killed, and as many as 45 assaulted since July 2013.

The bad news: At a dozen wings, Zinczenko estimated that the total fat found in this appetizer is equal to 43 strips of bacon. It's also packed with 5330 mg of sodium, which is two days worth of what you're supposed to get, and 3.2 grams of trans fat, which is almost a week's worth. You'd also have to jump rope for close to 3 hours to burn off all those calories.

The bad news: According to Zinczenko, the average woman is supposed to get no more than 25 grams of sugar a day, while the average man should have no more than 38 grams per day. This dessert has a whopping total of 235 grams of sugar. Meaning that it's over 9 times the recommended sugar intake for women, and over 6 times the amount for men. You'd have to go on the stair master for more than 5 hours to burn those calories off, which is totally not worth it.
