Bank Coins "Yummy" As Totally Awful New Term To Refer To Young Men

0
0

HSBC wrote a March research note titled “Rise of the Yummy,” which stands for “young, urban, male.” What they mean is that luxury brands are poised to benefit from younger customers, urbanization, and more spending from men.

HSBC

HSBC sent a note to clients this month titled "Rise of the Yummy," a new term for "young, urban males" — that is, the type of people that luxury retailers should be very excited about.

"Yummies" will drive growth for luxury brands such as Burberry and Luxottica this year and beyond, overshadowing concerns over consumer sentiment in China and political turmoil around the world, HSBC analysts led by Erwan Rambourg wrote. Businessweek pointed out the note earlier today, calling the new phrase "a handy verbal shortcut if one can say it without gagging."

The consumer brand and retail analysts explained the "Yummy" rationale in a more than 100-page report, saying that premium consumers are getting much younger, particularly in Asia. Urbanization, meanwhile, is "creating hordes of new luxury targets as the upper middle class swells." And as for "male," that represents the idea that more men are buying luxury goods, such as cosmetics, watches and bags.

"The metro-sexual, that cliche from 20 years ago, is now becoming a commercial reality, with Japan and Korea (as so often) showing the way," the analysts wrote.

Time will tell if "Yummy" catches on or just leaves a bad taste in people's mouths.

The Solar System Just Gained Another Dwarf Planet

Pluto has another friend.

Today scientists announced that they have found a new dwarf planet in our solar system, orbiting much further out than Pluto.

These images show the discovery of the new dwarf planet-like object, known by the catchy name of 2012 VP113 until it gains a more permanent one. They were taken about 2 hours apart on November 5, 2012. Scientists spotted the movement of the object as it stood out against the steady backdrop of stars and galaxies.

Scott S. Sheppard: Carnegie Institution for Science

Its orbit crosses that of Sedna, a dwarf planet discovered ten years ago, but the new object spends most of its time even further away from us.

Its orbit crosses that of Sedna, a dwarf planet discovered ten years ago, but the new object spends most of its time even further away from us.

The closest it gets to the sun is 80 times the distance between the sun and Earth, or about 12 billion kilometres. It's thought the object is about 450 kilometres in diameter.

Scott S. Sheppard: Carnegie Institution for Science

The discovery confirms that Sedna is not alone in the outer solar system.

The discovery confirms that Sedna is not alone in the outer solar system.

We may even need to rethink how we classify the different regions of the solar system. At the moment we have the inner rocky planets, including Earth; the gas giants, like Jupiter and Saturn; and the Kuiper belt objects, icy remnants from the formation of the solar system that orbit further out than the gas giants.

But the discovery of this new body, along with Sedna, suggests that even more may be lurking beyond the Kuiper belt in the outer reaches of our solar system.

20 Frustrations People With Oily Hair Know To Be True

Le1f Calls Out "Conservative" Rapper Lord Jamar For Using Homophobia As PR

0
0

“I know oppressions you will never understand,” rapper Le1f tells Jamar, the self-described defender of “conservative” hip-hop values.

On March 21, The New Yorker published an online profile of Lord Jamar, the struggling 45-year-old rapper and member of ’90s underground group Brand Nubian.

Jamar is now better known as a spokesperson for what he calls “hip-hop conservatives” than for his music; he's criticized Kanye West for wearing a black leather kilt repeatedly on Instagram, and in an attention-starved 2013 song called "Lift Up Your Skirt." Jamar captioned one January 2013 Instagram post, featuring a male model wearing a skirt, with this: "Y'all Cee where the Kanye shit is takin us right? #halfafag."

As The New Yorker points out, Jamar believes that hip-hop has been “hijacked” by the tastes of its increasingly white audience, and that rappers have become less masculine as a result. “To the average white person, a strong black man is scary. So what do we do? Let’s feminize him, emasculate him, sissify him, to make us feel more comfortable,” he said in a 2013 video interview.

dear Lord Jamar,
Choose your battles. If the whitening of rap is a concern to you, please leave my name out of it. If you think being gay is the same as being white, you are as ignorant as your enemies. I'm darker than you. I'm african. I'm a black man and I experience all the same racism you do, if not more, on top of homophobia, including from black men just like you. Are you proud of being a hateful member of a majority? Rap started out as a creative response to oppression, and no matter my outfit, I know oppressions you will never understand.
All respect,
Le1f

11 Kids Games That Would Be Better As Drinking Games

0

“Mother may I take a shot?” “Yes you may!”

Chris Ritter / BuzzFeed

Old game: Two teams of people stand in parallel lines holding hands. Each team takes turns choosing the supposedly scrawniest player and then singing "Red Rover, Red Rover, Send [selected weakling] right over!" The chosen runt runs really fast towards them trying the break the grasp of two players hands until someone inevitably sprains a wrist and the game is officially banned from the playground.

New game: Same, but with drunk people. If you don't make it through the chain, DRANK.

Old game: Players take turns being the leader and throwing a basketball into the hoop in various ways. Once the leader makes a shot, the second player must copy the same distance/posture/etc. and try to make the same shot. For each miss, the player gets a letter starting with H then O then R and so forth. The first player who gets HORSE loses.

New game: You'll be surprised how much easier it is to shoot a weird free-throw after a few. But see how long it takes before you forget how to spell HORSE. Or what a horse even is.

Old rules: A number of chairs that is one less than the number of players is set up in a room. While music is played, players must walk around the chairs until the music stops, at which point they all scramble to get a seat. The person without a seat is out and one chair is removed until there is one chair, two players and one final winner.

New rules: This is already played at every bar and party ever (only with, hopefully, better music). Might as well make it official and let people know that you will fight them for the last available stool.
