Why The "Friends" Series Finale Still Makes Me Cry

$

It’s been 10 years since the beloved sitcom aired its final episode. And I still love it as much as I did a decade ago.

NBC

NBC

Five little words will cause any die-hard Friends fan to tear up: "I got off the plane." When Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) appeared in Ross' (David Schwimmer) doorway after boarding a plane to Paris, even though he had confessed his love to her at the gate and begged her to stay, Friends fans exhaled. A love story 10 years in the making (really more, if we count the prom video) finally had its happy ending.

And the culmination was truly fitting for the two characters. Rachel could have walked out of Newark Airport hand-in-hand with Ross, headed into a blissful metaphorical sunset. But that wouldn't have been appropriate for the Ross-and-Rachel Friends fans had come to know and love. It would have been too simple. And nothing about Ross and Rachel was ever simple. From initially confessing their feelings, to their first kiss (and their first night together), to break-ups and breaks, there was always something standing in the way of their relationship.

The slogan: Long Live Egypt.

This is Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the Egyptian general who oversaw the ouster of Mohammed Morsi in July 2013 and, after nearly a year as Egypt's de facto leader, is expected to win this month's presidential election. Now he's even started campaigning.

He kicked it off this week with his first official campaign interview, pre-taped and aired in two parts on Monday and Tuesday night. Sisi fans were pumped. Others doubted if the general would actually have something new to say.

The series join Gotham , Mulaney (!), and the previously announced Bordertown as the network’s 2014-15 season starts to take shape.

The night after the trailer for Fox's buzzed about Batman prequel series Gotham blew up online, the network announced several more newcomers for the 2014-2015 season, including projects from big name executive producers Lee Daniels, who's venturing into the world of musicals, and Steven Spielberg, who is behind a highly unconventional high school drama.

Seth MacFarlane's new animated series, Bordertown, was announced last fall and will presumably be on the fall lineup and a rep for the network confirms that Rainn Wilson's Backstrom and the ancient Egypt drama Hieroglyph are both scheduled to debut in the upcoming television season.

John Mulaney's eponymous comedy, meanwhile, received a 16-episode order, joining the previously announced comedies Last Man On Earth, starring Will Forte, and Weird Loners, fronted by Ugly Betty alumna Becki Newton.

The broadcast networks officially present their 2014-2015 schedules to advertisers beginning May 12.

Here are Fox's new shows so far:

Gotham

Who's in it?: Benjamin McKenzie, Donal Logue, Robin Lord Taylor, Jada Pinkett Smith, Camren Bicondova, Cory Michael Smith, Clare Foley, and David Mazouz
Who made it?: Bruno Heller (The Mentalist), Danny Cannon (director/executive producer), and John Stephens (executive producer)
What’s it about?: The Batman prequel series sees former O.C. star McKenzie return to Fox as Gotham City Police Department Detective James Gordon, who's tasked with solving the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne. In turn, he finds himself spending a lot of time with their son (and witness) Bruce (Mazouz), who, of course, grows up to be Batman. The series will also explain the origins of Penguin (Taylor), Catwoman (Bicondova), The Riddler (Smith), and Poison Ivy (Foley).

Fox

Empire

Empire

Who's in it? Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Malik Yoba, Jussie Smollett, Bryshere Y. Gray, Trai Byers, Grace Gealey, Kaitlin Doubleday, and Gabourey Sidibe (who will recur)
Who made it? Lee Daniels (executive producer, director, and writer), Danny Strong (executive producer and writer), Brian Grazer (executive producer), and Francie Calfo (executive producer)
What's it about? The family drama follows hip-hop empire mogul Lucious Lyon (Howard) with Henson playing his ex-wife and business partner, reuniting the former Hustle & Flow co-stars. Plus, Timbaland will serve as a songwriter and song producer. Think of it as Nashville for the rap world.

Fox

Red Band Society

Red Band Society

Who's in it? Octavia Spencer, Dave Annable, Brian "Astro" Bradley, Ciara Bravo, Griffin Gluck, Zoe Levin, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Charlie Rowe, and Nolan Sotillo
Who created it? Steven Spielberg, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank (both of The Americans and Falling Skies), Sergio Aguero (Y Tu Mama Tambien), and Margaret Nagle (Boardwalk Empire), who also wrote the pilot
What's it about? A diverse group of teenagers who become unlikely allies and friends in the pediatric wing of a hospital. Frequent Ryan Murphy collaborator Alfonso Gomez-Rejon directed the pilot. Presumably, Spielberg will not be venturing back into the world of the musical drama. (RIP Smash)

20-Somethings Don't Want To Own Homes, Says One Hedge Fund Manager

$
0
0

At least that’s the bet one hedge fund manager is making, shorting the home building sector on the belief that a “generational shift” is creating permanent renters.

Feverpitched/Feverpitched

When it comes to the housing market, a small faction of the hedge fund world has little faith that 20-somethings will play much of a role in a recovery. Some investors have so little faith, in fact, that they are actively betting against the ability of young people to become homeowners in the near future, or possibly ever.

At the 2014 Sohn Investment Conference in New York on Monday, famed bond investor Jeffrey Gundlach presented a large short position in home building stocks, an investment thesis predicated on his belief that young people will fail to realize the "American Dream" of owning their own home due to a confluence of generational factors.

"The kids aren't all right," Gundlach said to a packed auditorium at Lincoln Center, an audience made up primarily of hedge fund managers and traders congregating to hear investment ideas from their most successful peers. "Renting is more appealing as a generational preference across all geographic areas in the U.S."

Gundlach cited low employment, student loan debt, and declining wages among the "millennial" generation as reasons for his short bet on a housing recovery, and also noted that many 20-somethings were moving back in with their parents. This, Gundlach initially thought, was an indication that young people were trying to save on increasingly higher rental costs to buy a home. But that endeavor has so far failed to materialize in the housing market.

While some studies have suggested that "millennials" are showing a strong desire to become homeowners, the mortgage market has seen plunging demand in recent months.

On the heels of Gundlach's presentation, shares of homebuilding stocks dropped 1% to 2%, including XHB, the specific exchange-traded fund Gundlach stated he was shorting.

Still, Robert Goldsborough, a fund analyst at Morningstar covering the XHB ETF, says that while Gundlach's bet against home ownership gains could indeed turn out to be a prescient one, it's much too early to tell if 20-somethings dragging their feet on buying homes will be a significant contributing factor.

"Housing stocks tend to trade heavily on sentiment," Goldsborough said. "They don't necessarily trade on fundamentals. "[Gundlach] expects very bad news ahead. He thinks even if there's new supply, there won't be enough buyers. [Millennials not buying] is a secular, long-term call, and I can certainly see how he could make that argument. We're not going to know this answer ultimately for another decade. If what happens unfolds the way that Jeff has laid out that it will, there's no question that homebuilding stocks are going to get hammered."

I'm Who The Roots Call When They Need Singers

Getting Kanye West a children’s choir for his Fallon performance, and other behind-the-scenes tales of how The Roots are revolutionizing late-night TV.

Alexander (left) backstage with Questlove and other singers she hired for a performance.

Stevvi Alexander is a professional singer and contractor to The Roots. Below, some of her stories from behind the scenes of the band's residency at The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, as told to Hunter Schwarz.

I've known The Roots for years. One of my best friends used to be in the Jazzyfatnastees, which was their girl group, and I'm really good friends with James Poyser, who's the unofficial fifth Beatle to The Roots. He's in the band and we're like the oldest of friends.

When I was living in New York, James brought me in to do the John Legend-Roots shows in 2010 including the Earth Day Rally with Sting and Joss Stone at the National Mall in D.C. I called in a great group of girls and we had a pretty serious blend, so I think The Roots were like, you're on. They basically told me I was a " Root" and whenever they needed singers, I would perform with them and find others who can round out the unit.

Because I've been in this business for so long, and because I left L.A. and lived in New York, I know people on both coasts. I call people I've worked with and who I know can do the job.

There Are A Whole Lot Of Penises In “Neighbors”

$

And with that comes plenty of homoeroticism. Stars Zac Efron and Seth Rogen and the men behind the movie talk about the plethora of penis jokes.

Teddy (Zac Efron) in Neighbors, half-naked, as is his wont.

Glen Wilson / Universal Pictures

Neighbors, which hits theaters Friday, features Zac Efron as tireless party boy Teddy, Seth Rogen as the tired new dad Mac who lives next to Teddy's frat house, and a lot of penis jokes.

"We're nerdy comedy guys, so we don't really think about it in terms of, Is there too much cock?" said Andrew J. Cohen, who co-wrote Neighbors with Brendan O'Brien. "It's more, What's funny? Right now, it's penises that are pretty funny."

"Sex and cock and farts," O'Brien added. "What do you laugh about?"

"There are a lot of dudes in fraternities, and therefore, a lot of cock," Cohen said. "In such close proximity, we assume that they see each other's cocks."

Seth Rogen, who plays the family man next door to the frat house, agreed. "Thirty dudes living in a house together? There's some dicks flopping around," he told BuzzFeed.

And Rogen knows that from rooming with other men himself. The actor used to live with Evan Goldberg, with whom he co-wrote Superbad, Pineapple Express, and This Is the End, and who is a producer on Neighbors. "We would be honest about it, and just be like, 'I'm going to go jerk off.'" Or, "'Be right back, I'm going to go jerk off,'" as Efron imagined aloud in response.

Teddy (Zac Efron) talks to Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne).

Universal Pictures

"We were writing together, and then there was a point where — just the sheer desire to conserve time — we realized it would probably be better if we just jerked off at the same time. As opposed to him doing it, then me doing it," Rogen recalled with his signature laugh. "And so we would kind of actually have coordinated jerk-off times. It's bordering on... It's homoerotic, I guess is what you would call it."

And though openly gay characters in Neighbors are only fleetingly on screen — there's a gay couple who checks out the empty house early in the film before the frat boys move in — homoeroticism abounds. Teddy, for example, grabs his friend's genitals and doesn't let go until said friend uses his ability to achieve voluntary erection directly into his hand. "It's super gay," Efron told BuzzFeed. "But it's not."

While the penis parade in Neighbors may seem carefree, for director Nicholas Stoller, there were some concerns: The one (prosthetic, enormous) penis you actually see in the film belongs to Christopher Mintz-Plasse's character, frat boy Scoonie, whose ample appendage is his dominant characteristic. And yes, it caused some trepidation.

"The rule that I heard was that you can show a penis in an R-rated movie; it just can't be above 90 degrees," Stoller told BuzzFeed. "So even if it's flaccid, like if you're flopping it around, if you flop it side to side, it's fine. If you flop it up and down you can get into trouble."

The 10 Worst Things To Say During A Break-Up

$
0

The modern versions of “I’m afraid of commitment” and “It’s not you, it’s me.”

mamamia.com.au

If a person says this and then suggests slowing down a little bit (maybe seeing/texting each other less during the week or whatever) then they are probably reacting accordingly to things getting serious more quickly than they'd like. Fine! Understandable! If a person says this and then suggests no longer seeing each other at all (or [ugh] "taking a break") then they've realized that they are no longer interested in this budding relationship but would rather end on infuriatingly open-ended terms than risk confrontation.

This one is baffling because there exists a vast middle ground between "being in a relationship and hurting someone" and "not being in a relationship and not hurting someone." Part of it is "being in a relationship and not hurting someone"! So it's strange that the person using this line thinks that the person being dumped doesn't understand this? No one who hears this feels grateful for their feelings being spared. They might feel grateful for avoiding dating a turd.

On its own, this is a completely valid statement. Not everyone is looking for a relationship, and sometimes people who are both looking for relationships are actually looking for different ones! Different strokes, you know? But it is without a doubt the worst kind of person who says they aren't looking for a relationship, allows the other person to walk away feeling like they experienced an honest and amicable parting of ways with a decent human whom they will think of fondly, and then announces their new relationship on Facebook three days later.
