This Is TALA: The Multicultural Producer/Singer You Can't Go Another Day Without Hearing

The globe-trotting, half-Iranian South Londoner, 25, counts M.I.A. and Fatima Al Qadiri among her inspirations. This is her story in her own words.

In May, the electronic producer/singer/songwriter TALA released The Duchess, a stellar three-song debut EP that we haven't been able to stop playing since. Here, the 25-year-old self-described "unsettled soul" shares her story so far.

I grew up in a town called Kingston in South London. It was green and quite chilled out — nothing ever really happened there. At my small, Catholic girls’ school, music was a big escape for me. I started classical training on piano when I was seven and would write songs and play music when I was bored.

My dad, who was Iranian and owned a Persian restaurant, was also a musician and the house was always a bit mad with sitars and drums all around. He’d be playing some Iranian or Arabic music in one room, while my mom, who’s English, would have cheesy pop music like Michael Ball playing in another. This was in the early to mid 2000s around the same time that the teenagers in my town were getting into UK garage. For me it was natural to start pulling all of those things together.

The first original music I wrote was a piano composition when I was 12 called something corny like “Dreams.” But when I was 13, a friend of mine gave me a music production software program called Reason. I was like, “Wow, I can do anything now!” That was the start of it.

I think my sound developed sort of naturally just by me making tunes in my bedroom for quite a while. Eventually, I just kind of found something that felt like it was working.

Aesop.

From 16-18 I went to the BRIT school. It's a creative school partly funded by the British record industry. A lot of people go there for music and music theatre and art. But I didn't realize how competitive it was to get into until I went to audition and there were hundreds of kids! I was coming from a tiny, convent girls' school and just wanted to be around other creative people.

Going to BRIT was quite a shock. There were boys there so I was like, "Oh my God." And you could wear your own clothes, which was amazing. There were so many talented people all around. The school has a lot of great alumni [Adele, Amy Winehouse, Katy B] and when I got there I just thought "Man, I'm not that good here." It definitely made me feel like I needed to work really hard and step my game up. I really realized that music isn't something you can just get into easily.

Music was always what I wanted to do but I didn't really think that it was achievable. I remember going to visit my older brother in L.A. after graduating from BRIT and not being sure what I wanted to do. I was a little confused. I didn't know if maybe I should study at uni[versity] or if I should do something else. But I knew that I would always be making music because I love doing it. Thankfully, things are going well at the moment. Fingers crossed!

A document obtained by BuzzFeed shows plans for the relocation of 1,000 of the undocumented immigrant minors who have been detained in recent months to East Coast facilities.

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration plans to move as many as 1,000 unaccompanied minor migrants from Border Patrol facilities in Texas to facilities in Baltimore, Md., and Richmond, Va., in an effort to ease overcrowding and address the growing humanitarian crisis along the border.

Tens of thousands of Central American children, many under the age of 10, have begun flooding across the border and into cramped, overcrowded holding facilities. The White House has directed FEMA to begin working with the Departments of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services to relocate the children.

DHS has already begun moving children to facilities in Texas and California, and starting Saturday will move them to Ft. Sill in Oklahoma.

According to a "transportation flow chart" obtained by BuzzFeed, the administration will now begin resettling the children to an Office of Refugee Resettlement facility in Baltimore and to St. Paul's College in Richmond. Both facilities can accommodate up to 500 beds, according to the document. According to the chart, DHS buses and planes, as well as commercial planes, will be used to transport the children to all facilities.

The decision to move the children to other facilities has angered conservatives, including Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne, who has threatened to sue the government to temporarily block sending them to a Nogales, Ariz., facility.

HHS spokesman Ken Wolfe declined to comment on the plan to move the children to Baltimore and Richmond, saying in an email, "Fort Sill's temporary shelter will begin to receive children in the Unaccompanied Alien Children program tomorrow. There are no announcements yet on future facilities."

This is the flow chart outlining the relocations:

The Awesome Story Behind The Awesome "22 Jump Street" End Credits

“The audience, all they want is to think that this goes on forever and ever and ever.” MAJOR SPOILERS ahead!

Warning: The following story contains SPOILERS for the end of 22 Jump Street.

Warning: The following story contains SPOILERS for the end of 22 Jump Street .

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in 22 Jump Street

Glen Wilson / Columbia Pictures

The action comedy sequel 22 Jump Street is filled with knowing jokes about the fact that it is, well, an action comedy sequel to the 2012 hit 21 Jump Street (which was itself a self-aware reboot of the 1980s television series starring Johnny Depp). Audiences who stick around through the end credits of 22 Jump Street, however, can see that joke taken even further, with winking sneak peeks of future possible installations in the franchise. Now that Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's undercover cops have conquered high school and college, in 23 Jump Street, their boss —played by Ice Cube — sends them to medical school. And then culinary school. And then firefighter school, dance school, and seminary school. Eventually, they go to space. And become a video game. And an animated series.

It is a wildly inventive spoof of Hollywood's insatiable appetite for franchise expansion, but the original plan was for Hill and Tatum to not go on any more missions at all.

"The end of 22 Jump Street was Ice Cube being like, 'You guys want to go on another mission?'" said Phil Lord, who with partner Christopher Miller directed both 22 Jump Street and its predecessor. "And they're like, 'No. We're done. We never want to do this again.'"

That ending, however, tested terribly in pre-release screenings. "The audience was so sad," said Lord. "Because all they want at that point in the movie is to think that this goes on forever and ever and ever. And then of course, we thought of a way to do that."

Well into post-production on the movie, Lord and Miller set about brainstorming all the possible iterations of Jump Street they could muster. "There are twice, maybe three times as many shitty ideas for sequels [than what made it in the film]," said Lord. "There was a sitcom we wanted to shoot."

"We had a film school one," added Miller. "We wanted to do one on the set of Jeopardy!, where they are uncovering a quiz show scandal."

The video game and animated series were created by independent "visual studio" Alma Mater, which also did the adorable end credits for Lord and Miller's last film, The LEGO Movie. But all of the live-action bits were ultimately limited to what they could shoot on a single day on the Sony lot. Still, the duo did manage to squeeze in cameos from Anna Faris, Seth Rogen, and Bill Hader.

"Chris emailed me and his email started, like, 'OK, this is really stupid, but for 22 Jump Street, we're showing the sequels during the closing credits," Hader told BuzzFeed. "I was like, 'Oh my god, absolutely. You kidding?' And then I showed up and they were like, 'Here's your costume,' and it was a chef's thing. That's when I found out what it was. They're like, 'Yeah, you're a chef and, I don't know, I think they're gonna be getting some sort of a microfilm out of some sort of food, and they're undercover chefs, and then it's like, you are the bad guy the whole time, it's that kind of scene.' And I was like, 'Oh, OK.'"

Although the sequence would seem to guarantee what 23 Jump Street could be — "We've already established that it has to be medical school," said Lord — the directors see a few options for a way around it.

"It could be 20 Jump Street, the prequel," said Miller.

"I hope that there's a sequel called 22 Jump Street 2," said Lord. "It happens before they go to medical school."
