Obama Says Israel Has A "Right To Defend Itself"
The president addresses a crisis that has left more than 200 Palestinians dead.
Amir Cohen / Reuters
President Obama said Wednesday that Israel "has the right to defend itself" in his first comments on the latest round of Israeli-Palestinian violence, which has left 208 people dead, 207 of them Palestinian.
"As I've said repeatedly, Israel has a right to defend itself from rocket attacks that terrorize the Israeli people," Obama said. Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, has lobbed hundreds of rockets into Israel since hostilities broke out last week as tensions grew in the wake of the grizzly murders of three Israeli teenagers and the revenge murder of a Palestinian teen. The rockets have killed no one, and some have been intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome air defense system.
"There's no country on earth that can be expected to live under a daily barrage of rockets," Obama said. "And I'm proud that the Iron Dome system that Americans helped Israel develop and fund has saved many Israeli lives."
Israel's campaign against the Gaza Strip, meanwhile, has killed more than 200 people, including nearly 40 children, in the densely populated area. Obama said, "We've all been heartbroken by the violence, especially the death and injury of so many innocent civilians in Gaza — men, women, and children who were caught in the crossfire." Israel has insisted it provides warnings ahead of missile strikes in order to avoid civilian deaths. On Wednesday, the death of four children in a missile strike on a Gaza beach prompted widespread outrage.
"The Israeli people and the Palestinian people don't want to live like this," Obama said. "They deserve to live in peace and security, free from fear."
Obama said the U.S. continues "to support diplomatic efforts to end the violence between Israel and Hamas." A short-lived cease-fire, brokered by Egypt and accepted only by Israel, fell apart on Tuesday. Obama said he supported further Egyptian efforts and said he would "continue to encourage diplomatic efforts to restore the cease-fire."

8 Basic Steps To Rejecting A Hostile Takeover Offer
On the heels of Time Warner’s rejection of an unsolicited takeover bid from Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox , here’s a look at how companies politely tell potential buyers to get lost.
Begin by stating your "careful evaluation" of the proposal in question.
"The Men's Wearhouse today announced that its Board of Directors, after careful evaluation with the assistance of its financial and legal advisors, has determined to reject an unsolicited, non-binding proposal from Jos. A. Bank."

"After a comprehensive review, conducted in consultation with its financial and legal advisors, the Allergan Board concluded..."

"After carefully reviewing your offer with our financial and legal advisors, we continue to believe that your offer to acquire Jos. A. Bank..."

But be sure to throw some shade right away.
"Time Warner Cable Inc. said today that its Board of Directors has unanimously rejected a third grossly inadequate proposal from Charter Communications to acquire TWC. The proposal was described only generally in a letter received today from Charter as being in the 'low $130s.'"
— Time Warner Cable
January 13, 2014
"We are confident that we can achieve total shareholder returns well in excess of what can be derived from Jos. A. Bank's unsolicited and inadequate proposal."
— Men's Wearhouse
October 9, 2013
"Darden strongly believes that Starboard's special meeting is an unsatisfactory alternative to direct, ongoing engagement between the Company and its shareholders regarding the Company's strategic direction and other matters of interest to shareholders."
— Darden to Starboard Value

"[The Cadbury board]emphatically rejected this derisory offer."
— Cardbury to Kraft
November 10, 2009
Determine whether the offer "significantly" or "substantially" undervalues your company.
"First and foremost, it substantially undervalues TWC and would represent an EBITDA multiple of approximately 7X, well below past transactions in the cable sector."
— Time Warner Cable to Charter
January 13, 2014
"After careful review and consideration, our Board of Directors has unanimously determined that Valeant's unsolicited proposal substantially undervalues Allergan."
— Allergan
May 12, 2014
"The Men's Wearhouse Board believes that Jos. A. Bank's proposal significantly undervalues Men's Wearhouse."
— Men's Wearhouse
October 9, 2013
"As you may be aware, Endurance Specialty Holdings Ltd. recently became a shareholder of your Company and has filed a solicitation statement seeking shareholder support for certain tactics intended to facilitate its unsolicited offer to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Aspen Insurance Holdings Limited in exchange for consideration that the Aspen board of directors has repeatedly and unanimously determined significantly undervalues Aspen."

Make sure everyone knows how risky this would be.
"There is significant risk and uncertainty as to the valuation of Twenty-First Century Fox's non-voting stock and Twenty-First Century Fox's ability to govern and manage a combination of the size and scale of Twenty-First Century Fox and Time Warner; and there are considerable strategic, operational, and regulatory risks to executing a combination with Twenty-First Century Fox."
— Time Warner
July 16, 2014
"Furthermore, the Board has determined that Valeant's proposal creates significant risks and uncertainties for Allergan's stockholders and believes that the Valeant business model is not sustainable."
— Allergan
May 12, 2014
"We believe Jos. A. Bank's unsolicited proposal is opportunistic, subject to unacceptable risks and contingencies, and would deprive our shareholders of the value inherent in Men's Wearhouse for inadequate consideration."
— Men's Wearhouse
October 9, 2013
"We have rejected Pfizer's final proposal because it is inadequate and would present significant risks for shareholders, while also having serious consequences for the company, our employees and the life-sciences sector in the UK, Sweden and the US."
— Astrazeneca

7 Things We Can't Wait To See When "The Comeback" Returns
I DO wanna see that!
Before the rise of the Kardashians or any housewife, there was a star named Valerie Cherish (Lisa Kudrow), the leading lady of HBO's The Comeback. The fortysomething D-list actress who found success decades earlier just wanted to get cast on a sitcom with four characters half her age and in the process, she agreed to document her return to the screen on a reality show (also called The Comeback).
Despite being put in a tracksuit and a cupcake costume, dealing with a writer who hates her, and constantly asking and being denied requests to turn off the cameras, Val kept the smile on her face and the bounce in her curls throughout the show's first season, which aired in 2005. But by the end of its initial run, there was good news and bad news: Val had punched her writer in the gut, leading both of them to throw up on national television, and had her reality show renewed for a second season.
Nearly a decade later, fans are finally going to get a glimpse into what that second season consisted of and what Hollywood's "It" girl has been up to after all this time now that HBO's revived The Comeback, with new episodes set to debut in November.
With Kudrow and co-creator Michael Patrick King already deep into the long-awaited return, here are a few things we can look forward to in The Comeback's comeback.

Why I'll Miss Elaine Stritch
How actress Elaine Stritch, who died on Thursday at 89, inspired me to revisit the golden age of Hollywood.
I first discovered the incredibly quick-witted and famously pantsless Elaine Stritch back in 2006 when she guest-starred on 30 Rock as Colleen Donaghy, the brash yet secretly-loving mother to Alec Baldwin's Jack Donaghy. She effortlessly stole every scene, and her comedic timing was impeccably sharp. So, naturally, it took a whole three seconds before I thought to myself: "Who is this woman, and why isn't she my grandmother?" It's paradoxical how I was just then being introduced to a woman who had already been in the spotlight for over six decades.
Getty / Cindy Ord
Stritch got her start in the theater in 1944 and ultimately went on to perform in 19 different productions on Broadway. Though I never got a chance to see her perform live when I moved to New York, I was tickled as hell with the thought of randomly bumping into her on its busy streets. And what would have happened if I actually did run into her? Well, I probably would have asked for a hug, sidling up to her oversized coat that seemed to weigh just as much as she did, and I might have even asked to try on her iconic black-rimmed glasses. Is that crazy?
To me, Elaine's most inspiring work is Elaine Stritch At Liberty, her brutally honest one-woman show where she courageously reveals everything from her battle with alcoholism to going on a date with Marlon Brando (as a 17-year-old virgin) to losing the lead role in The Golden Girls. Stritch's exploration of her past in this golden age of Hollywood and theater encouraged me revisit the classics. So, rather than getting slowly and deliciously inebriated in the early afternoon like the other college kids around me, I spent my university weekends marathoning black-and-white movies on TCM. I'm not sure how she did it, but Elaine Stritch, in her ninth decade alive, took an impressionable twentysomething on a relatable journey through struggle, sacrifice, and love.

13 Reasons You Need To Start Dancing Every Minute Of Every Day
According to Kiesza.
Kiesza — this summer's surprise breakout diva — started dancing ballet when she was 3.
She had to give up intensive ballet at 15, after a knee injury, but never forgot the way dance training made her feel. Looking for a new outlet, she got into sailing and joined the Canadian navy, then found a creative home in music. After trying her hand at acoustic guitar, death metal, and working as a behind-the-scenes writer of EDM pop, she rocketed to the top of the U.K. charts in April with "Hideaway," a propulsive song indebted to the big-belters of 1990s dance that's just a touch slower than today's club hits, and all the better to really move to.
