The Weird And Surprising Business Of Watching People Play Old Video Games Very Fast

$

Competitive games like League of Legends often get most of the acclaim on the Twitch community. But one rising audience is centered around a practice called “speed-running.”

Twitch

Into the wee hours of a morning in July, Cosmo Wright — who broadcasts videos of himself playing video games for a living — had completed what he likely considered to be a masterpiece.

Wright had completed what likely millions of others had done millions of times: beaten The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. But unlike everyone else who had played the game, Wright had beaten it very, very quickly. Through some impressive gameplay and manipulation of glitches, he had actually beaten the game in 18 minutes and 10 seconds, earning him the world record for beating the game in the shortest-possible time.

Wright is known as a "speed-runner," one of a community of players who go through older (and sometimes newer) games as fast as they possibly can through mastery of the game and manipulation of various glitches. And thanks to the advent of platforms like Twitch, a website and application that lets professional gamers earn a living through partnerships with the company, it's turned into a full-blown profession in the gaming world. Many popular speed-runners make a show out of playing the game, interacting with their audience and giving step-by-step commentary as they play.

"Part of what appeals to people is it's a lot different from most stuff you see on Twitch," Twitch's head of speed-running partnerships Andrew Schroeder, who runs an annual charity event called Awesome Games Done Quick, told BuzzFeed. "Most of that is eSports and fighting games. You don't really get to see that often, an old game being played you remember from your childhood that's being played in a completely different way — that's what makes people stick with it."

Awesome Games Done Quick

Thanks to Twitch's partner program, which enrolls some of the top and most interesting players in the world, people like Wright are able to make a living through playing video games. Twitch currently has 6,500 players in its partner program who stream games like League of Legends, Minecraft, and older games in the speed-running community like Super Mario 64. These players attract donations, subscriptions for premium channel experiences, and also receive a revenue share for some of the ads shown on their channel. The job is a full-time profession, requiring months or years of practice in order to get the perfect run, like Wright's world record for Ocarina of Time.

Prior to Twitch, speed-running had a bit of a cult following through a site called Speed Demos Archive. Players would manually record their runs and mail them to the people behind SDA, as it is colloquially called in the community, which would then encode it and upload it to the site. SDA still exists today and hosts videos of more than 1,000 games, loaded with commentary about the specifics behind the runs and how they came to exist. The games played in the speed-running community run the complete gamut of iconic classics like Super Mario to obscure titles and new ones like Dark Souls.

Despite being one of Twitch's smaller communities, the company is still quite sensitive to its desires. Earlier this month, Twitch instituted a new tool that would mute unlicensed music in older videos stored on the site. This had the unfortunate side effect of muting archived speed-running videos based on the actual video game music, enraging many in the speed-running community — including Wright. Shear said it was a mistake that would quickly be rectified, and wrote on Reddit to address concerns about the new tools and underscoring much of what made Twitch popular among gamers: focusing on what the community wanted.

The company's focus on its community and broadcasters, coupled with its technical expertise in building a live-streaming service, is part of the reason Twitch has rocketed to being one of the most valuable video properties in the world. Twitch says it has 55 million unique viewers each month, each of whom watch an average of 106 minutes of video a day. The company is also reportedly being eyed by Google for an acquisition that would value the company at around $1 billion.

Ben Platt, the actor who played lovable roommate Benji Applebaum, talks about postponing college for Pitch Perfect , what to look forward to in the sequel, the “Cups” craze, and, of course, magic.

King Perez De Tagle

It's hard to stand out in a chorus, let alone in performances as big as those in the climactic moments of the 2012 smash hit movie Pitch Perfect, but that's exactly what Ben Platt managed to do. He might not have become a household name as a result of the movie, like say, Rebel Wilson, but Platt's character Benji, the dorky, magic-obsessed roommate of leading man Jesse (Skylar Astin), stole audience's hearts when he was finally given a chance to (literally) take center stage, and sing with the a cappella group that had previously rejected him: The Treblemakers. Benji was no longer sitting alone in his room, under his TIE Fighter Star Wars mobile, playing with his magic rainbow handkerchief — he was on the rise.

And though Platt might not have the same passions — or make the same decorating choices — as his character, who will have a much bigger part in the Pitch Perfect sequel that is due to hit theaters on May 15, 2015, he understands where Benji is coming from. He can't do any magic tricks in real life and has never seen a single Star Wars film, but, at a diner in New York City's Theater District, Platt easily channeled Benji's enthusiasm when talking about acting and singing, skills he gets to use both in the Pitch Perfect franchise and eight times a week on the Broadway stage in The Book of Mormon as Elder Cunningham, the part originated by Josh Gad.

"I kind of always pretend I'm talking about musical theater when my character is talking about how much he loves Star Wars because I feel as nerdy about that as someone might feel about Star Wars," Platt said. The 20-year-old actor, who laughed about how his grandparents were coming to see him in the hilariously vulgar Mormon for the first time that evening, is still getting used to being asked for his autograph at restaurants, but is incredibly comfortable on stage. Like the B.o.B. song he sings in that fateful Pitch Perfect scene, Platt definitely has "got the magic" in him when talking about performing.

The actor's love for musical theater runs deep: His parents were both singers, his father produces musicals, and Platt is the second youngest of five siblings, all of whom participated in after-school music programs while growing up in Los Angeles. When he was 9 years old, Platt's after-school teacher sent him on a casting call for a production of The Music Man at The Hollywood Bowl and he won the part of Marian's awkward little brother Winthrop, alongside Kristin Chenoweth as Marian and Eric McCormack as Harold Hill. And with that, Platt said, "I just got bitten by the bug."

18 Short Story Writers On Why They Decided To Write A Novel

An incredible group of authors discuss why they chose to go long.

It happens all the time: A writer publishes a wonderful collection of short stories and then moves into the heady world of the novel. But why did he or she decide to go long? Was there pressure to take on a novel? Did the new story dictate a higher word count? Did the writer simply feel inspired to shift focus?

I spoke with 18 authors — already successful in working small — about their decision to write a novel. Some are just now first-time novelists (or will have their first novels published soon), while others made the transition early in their careers. With each, I asked this one question: What made you take the leap from short fiction/essays to the novel?

Maya Lang

Maya Lang

Maya Lang was a finalist for Glimmer Train’s Short Story Award for New Writers and was awarded the 2012 Bread Loaf-Rona Jaffe Foundation Scholarship in Fiction. Her debut novel, The Sixteenth of June, longlisted for the 2014 Flaherty-Dunnan Prize, is out now from Scribner.

When the idea for my novel first came to me, I made the foolish assumption that I should wet my feet by writing a few short stories first. In hindsight, this is like deciding to ski jump because you’re daunted by the thought of some afternoon snowshoeing. Did I learn lessons while trying my hand at the short form? Absolutely. But I’ve come to feel that stories are much harder than novels. The very quality that makes the story seem less intimidating is what makes it so difficult: its compactness. There’s a leisurely quality to working on a novel, a meandering sense of room that’s quite freeing. You can work with your characters over time, get to know them, arrive at your destination in your own way. If I have learned anything, it is to write what is in your heart, what tugs at your thoughts, not what you think you “should.”

Courtney Maum

Courtney Maum

Courtney Maum is the voice behind the “Celebrity Book Review” humor column over at Electric Literature and also writes an advice column for Tin House. Her debut novel, I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You, was released in June from Touchstone.

Quite simply, because I’m not very good at short stories. While I manage to write compact work for the web, I lack the elegance and precision it takes to be a dynamite short story writer. It’s the same for me in the kitchen — I love to cook unwieldy, savory dishes — adding a little bit of this, a little bit of that, repurposing leftovers I’ve had in the fridge for days — but you don’t want me near the sweet stuff. Baking requires the same kind of exactitude that short story writing does, and I am too impatient and mercurial to bake.
