11 Times Viola Davis Was So Brilliant She Almost Made Us Angry

“I don’t have any time to stay up all night worrying about what someone who doesn’t love me has to say about me.”

Viola Davis turned an 11-minute long appearance in the play Doubt — opposite the formidable Meryl Streep — into an Oscar-nominated performance. So, maybe it isn't surprising that Davis comes across as transcendent in almost all of her interviews and speeches. Here are just a few of the reasons why Davis probably could get away with murder, if she wanted to.

She isn't an "angry black woman" and knows Shonda Rhimes isn't either.

Earlier this month, BuzzFeed News' Kate Aurthur interviewed Viola Davis, Kerry Washington, and Ellen Pompeo about working in Shondaland. Here is what Davis had to say about diversity in Hollywood: “And it’s interesting that you have a number of directors and showrunners out there who just have all Caucasian casts. Now, they see color. They may not tell you. And you know why they won’t tell you? Because you won’t put them to task. [...] So they will continue doing what they’re doing and they’re the ones who really need to be pushed in that direction. Shonda doesn’t have the problem.”

“I don’t care if it’s embarrassing. I’m 48. I understand the grand scheme of life and what’s really important," Davis said in the September issue of More magazine. "Me saying that I grew up without food, without electricity, without running water at times? It’s a small price to pay to help kids not go hungry.”

“Even when I get the fried chicken special of the day, I have to dig into it like it’s filet mignon,” Davis told New York Magazine when asked about preparing for seemingly minor roles.

Tau Kappa Epsilon at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee threw a party where female guests’ hands were marked with a color-coded X. Three women with a red X may have been given drinks with a date rape drug.

WISN / Via wisn.com

Three women were hospitalized after becoming severely intoxicated and having memory lapses after drinking at the Tau Kappa Epsilon house were all found to have a red X on their hands, the Journal Sentinel reported. A man with a black X on his hand was also taken to a hospital; he had been drinking from cups given to a female friend marked with a red X.

After interviewing several party-goers, police found that they received a black or red X when they entered, the Journal Sentinel reported. Several people said some shots of vodka looked cloudy, and that drinks were mixed underneath the bar, out of view.

One woman said a fraternity member got upset with her when she tried to mix her own drink.

A firefighter has died one month after being electrocuted during an ice bucket challenge stunt.

Capt. Tony Grider, 41, died Saturday from burn-related injuries, dispatcher Mark Coker told CNN. Grider and three other Campbellsville firefighters were shocked by a power line as they sprayed water on a group of college students.

The Campbellsville Fire Department posted on Facebook that Grider passed away and said that another firefighter injured during the incident, Alex Quinn, was still battling serious injuries.

This Woman's Letter About Her Elderly Mother's Mobile Phone Problem Is Hilarious

0

In fairness, this must’ve been pretty horrifying.

I am writing to inquire whether anyone else has experienced what I believe is a previously undiscovered threat to human life from over-engineering in new technology. My 76-year-old mother recently bought a new mobile phone. She was sitting quietly and alone in her house at night, trying – but repeatedly failing – to send a text using the unfamiliar system. She finally gave up in exasperation and shouted: "Well fuck off then" at the phone. Whereupon a voice replied, with the eerie calm hitherto only mastered by HAL: "Have I done something wrong?" She did not know the phone was equipped with a speech app and is still in a state of physical and emotional collapse.
