It rebukes international reporting, “Nowhere did I suggest that Hillsong supported gay marriage.”

The New York Times reported that Hillsong co-founder Brian Houston was in an "ongoing conversation" about marriage equality which represented a "shift in tone" for Christian evangelical churches.

The response to NYT report came via a statement to the church's website.

"Nowhere in my answer did I diminish biblical truth or suggest that I or Hillsong Church supported gay marriage. My personal view on the subject of homosexuality would line up with most traditionally held Christian views," wrote Mr Houston.

The pastor said he was not publically "condemning" homosexuality because the church had campuses in New York and California, where there is marriage equality.

"I made the point that public statements condemning people will place a barrier between the church and the world... which is why at Hillsong, we don't want to reduce the real issues in people's lives to a sound bite."

The powerful Pentecostal church counts upwards of 100,000 people attending its weekly services worldwide and has become known globally for producing best-selling Christian rock albums.

Mr Houston's statement sparked some criticism from Hillsong's hundreds of thousands of followers on Facebook, who were concerned the church's position on marriage seems vague.

How My 98-Year-Old Grandfather Embraced The Internet

0
0

And what I’ve learned as a result.

Jenny Chang / BuzzFeed

Hi, Another mystery for me.

Do I have Twitter ? Should I have this account ? If so what is it for ? How do I set it up ?
Thanks Grandpa

That was the email I received on the afternoon of Sept. 14 from my grandfather. He was forwarding a message he'd gotten from Twitter, where he has an account that he doesn't often use. But he wasn't content to let the email sit there filed away. He demanded to understand and remember why and how he ended up with a Twitter account, and what he might use it for.

My grandfather, who will turn 98 next month, has taken this approach to computers and the internet since we got him a Mac at some not-agreed-upon date in the '90s: one of relentless curiosity and unabashed questioning.

As a result, he's actually really good at the internet.

In addition to Twitter, my grandfather, who now uses a Mac in my father's old bedroom in his house just north of New York City, has also had accounts on Facebook and Blogspot, where for a time he shared his thoughts on global oil prices. Together, we've used Google Maps to identify his grandmother's house in a tiny German village where he spent summers as a kid. On Ancestry.com, we dug up the passenger list of the ship that brought him to New York in April 1937, a flight manifest for a Pan-Am flight he took in the '50s, a copy of the form announcing his naturalization as a U.S. citizen.

When I tell friends that email is the way I most frequently communicate with my grandfather, a man who was born in the middle of World War I, they're often shocked. But his use of the internet is, at its core, not all that different from mine — he may use an extra-large keyboard while I type furiously on an iPhone, but his frustrations are often the same: forgotten passwords, buggy apps, trying to remember what you googled to find a specific article. We both resisted updating the latest Apple operating system for much longer than we should have.

And, like any good troubleshooter, he's glad when a bug is resolved. On Oct. 13, 2011, he wrote:

Hi, Happy to report that my "send" button on the computer is working again Love Dad Grandpa

Most emails aren't so short — they're often lengthy examinations of a topic I know he's genuinely and deeply intrigued by. Most recently, these have included the history of the Crusades, research into genetics, and occasional articles from the the New York Times (with instructions that the story can be found on page A5). A look through my archives has emails with the following subject lines: "Facebook," "Snow Storm," "My Life Story," "Your Email Dated 3/15," "Google," "My Printer," and "My Resume Dated 1982."

The emails are a way of keeping in touch, but not sharing what you had for breakfast or how a certain doctor's appointment went. Like an online native, he knows too much small talk always feels awkward on the internet.

This is all to say that the internet isn't a novelty to my grandfather — he's used it roughly as long as I have, and he doesn't shake his head or throw his hands in the air at the mention of a new app. Instead, he focuses his attention on different concerns: How do online publications make money? What's your website's audience demographic? He may forget exactly what Twitter does, but his questions about the various online publications for which I've worked are, for the most part, more incisive than those from people half or a quarter of his age.

"Dr. Luke Has Tortured Me And My Family": The Inside Story Of Kesha's Early Cries For Help

Nine months before her bombshell lawsuit accused super-producer Dr. Luke of date rape and other heinous acts, Kesha opened up about being abused in letters to fans discovered by BuzzFeed News.

Long known as pop music's beglittered and giddily irreverent party girl, Kesha stunned many in the music world with allegations in a lawsuit filed earlier this week that she had been raped and physically abused by Dr. Luke, the super-producer and mogul who shepherded her career beginning when she was still in high school. But not everyone was surprised by the news. Annie Gallo, an 18-year-old college student from Virginia, is one of a handful of individuals who learned of Luke's allegedly abusive tendencies as early as January of this year, in a letter from Kesha herself.

Gallo's letter, written by Kesha during her well-publicized stint in rehab for an eating disorder, goes beyond accusing Dr. Luke of spurring on the disorder — he allegedly said she "looked like a refrigerator" — to refer to untold other sins she won't allow herself to name.

"Dr. Luke has tortured me & my family… he did do what people know about + SO much more terrible shit," Kesha writes.

In another letter, this one to Kelly Mullin, a 16-year-old fan also from Virginia, Kesha references "someone [she] work[s] with" who had become a tormentor and the source of her anguish. "Someone I work with has literally driven me into this disease, tortured me and fucked with me and my family."

BuzzFeed News discovered five such letters on social media, all apparently written while Kesha was in rehab, and confirmed the authenticity of three of them with recipients who agreed to be interviewed. All of the letters reference pain and suffering caused by someone in Kesha's inner circle, with two of them, including Gallo's, referring to Dr. Luke by name. See the letters below along with a sample of Kesha's handwriting shared with iHeartRadio in 2013.

People Are Upset About A Ben & Jerry's Flavor That They Claim Is Insensitive To Hazing Victims

Anti-hazing activists wrote a letter to the company asking them to rename the hazelnut-flavored ice cream. The company says they are not yet going to make any changes.

The new flavor, made with fudge chips and a hazelnut fudge core, is supposed to be a riff off of the pop culture phrase "dazed and confused," made famous by the 1993 teen comedy and a Led Zeppelin lyric.

Here's A Map Of European Countries With Literal Translations Of Their Chinese Names

“Yes, I InterRailed from Lawland to West Classtooth. I had a splendid couple of weeks.”

The good news is we live in BRAVELAND.

haonowshaokao.com

This is not a serious translation by any means – I've translated the names in a pedantic, literal way, character-by-character, which wouldn't make sense to most Chinese people.

I don't want to make fun of Chinese people or the Chinese language, it's just a funny way for me to remember the names of countries as I learn the language. Chinese people don't really think of America as Beautiful Country or the UK as Brave Country any more than we think of Turkey as a bird. Any language unlike your own looks strange from the outside, but I hope people can use this as a stepping stone to learning Chinese rather than laughing at it.

My wife (an actual Chinese person) helped make it, and it's as much hers as it is mine.

Sweden and Switzerland are the wrong way round. This was a mistake, but I'm leaving it in as people do tend to confuse the two as they have similar names in Chinese.

Russia is just Russia because I wanted to call Belarus White Russia – this is both the literal Chinese name and the literal old English name, and the Chinese name, Bai E Luo Si, sounds just like the real name. Which is pretty neat.

He also pointed out that it's worth reading the comments on his original post, as there's lots of great insight there.

Two San Francisco radio stations have banned Lorde's hit song "Royals" from the airwaves while their Giants battle the Kansas City Royals in the World Series.

The Guardian reported:

KOIT's decision followed a torrent of complaints from their listeners. Critics claimed that by playing Royals KOIT was backing the wrong team to take home baseball's biggest prize, according to Fox 4 News. "Our listeners told us to do it, so we did it," declared programme director Brian Figula. "As of 4pm today we've removed Lorde's Royals from the our playlist until the end of the World Series. Go Giants, beat the Royals!"
