23 Things You Didn't See On TV At The MTV EMAs

0
0

I went to the EMAs last night and watched from the audience. Here’s what I saw.

Getty Images

1. All of the celebrities were seated in a pit that was just to the left of the main stage. They were seated on black sofas, but most of the time they were standing up and mingling with each other.

2. The celebrities were seated facing towards the audience, meaning the section that were standing close to them were continually taking photos.

3. At one stage a group of girls just sang the words "Ariana Grande" at her while she smiled and waved from the front row.

4. It was also pretty funny that all of the stars were sitting together, so the likes of Ariana Grande were mixing with the cast of Geordie Shore.

5. Nicki Minaj needed two members of security to help her down from the second stage after her first piece of hosting.

6. A team of about 30 production crew was required to set up Nicki Minaj's staging for her medley performance.

7. And they brought on the lettering for "Anaconda" separately from the rest of the staging, meaning that as Minaj finished off her new song, the letters were wheeled out behind her and placed into position.

8. The second the audience saw the letters being positioned, they screamed with excitement.

9. However, by far the biggest screams of the night went to 5 Seconds of Summer and One Direction, despite neither band actually being there.

10. After coming off stage from winning her first award, Ariana Grande immediately handed her gong over to a member of security and walked the other way. I hope she remembered to pick it up later.

11. However, when she came off stage the second time, she stopped to sign autographs for a coupleof fans.

12. There weren't that many banners in the audience, but one girl was holding a sign that read "Ed Sheeran, can I have your ginger babies?" – unfortunately she was holding it upside down for the majority of the show.

13. You could see Sharon Osbourne crying as Ozzy Osbourne was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

14. Just before Nicki Minaj began to sing "Superbass," she looked to be struggling to get her ear-pieces into position. Luckily she managed to get it sorted literally the second before the introduction kicked in.

15. The show was set out for television. So when Charli XCX sang "Boom Clap," she performed a fair chunk of it positioned it on a little stand directly into a camera rather than to the audience.

16. In the same vein, the audience were encouraged to clap and cheer whenever an ad-break was coming to a close so that the show started up again, it opened to rapturous applause.

17. And during every advert break, the stage was swarmed by members of the production crew who were re-positioning staging for the next performance, sweeping the floors and getting dancers into position. When you watch an awards show on TV you don't think about the behind-the-scenes chaos that occurs to keep the whole thing running seamlessly.

18. Afrojack did a cute little excited dance on stage as the nominations for Best Worldwide Act were being read out, before he handed out the award.

19. Two members of security were needed to basically drag the giant dinosaur down the stairs after it appeared on stage behind Nicki when she was hosting.

20. And just before it photobombed her selfie, you could see the costume being moved through the audience into position.

21. It appeared that Ariana Grande left immediately after receiving her second award, just before the final performance of the night.

22. It has to be said that Ariana Grande's voice is fucking phenomenal – in terms of vocals, hers was the performance of the night from inside the arena.

23. And finally, the flames, fireworks and pyrotechnics during Slash's performance with Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators as well as Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro, were so hot it was like being in a furnace every time one went off. No wonder Simon performed topless.

Here's What Happens When You Ask A Chef To Make You Breakfast

In our new series BuzzFeed Breakfast, we invite a chef to hang out and cook stuff at 10 a.m. Then we show you how to recreate what he or she did.

When chef and recent James Beard Award winner Jamie Bissonnette showed up at BuzzFeed's test kitchen with a cooler full of farmers market vegetables and homemade chorizo, we nearly passed out from excitement.

We'd invited him to visit and make whatever he wanted for this post, the first in a new series called BuzzFeed Breakfast, wherein we ask chefs to come hang out at 10 a.m. and cook. Bissonnette has three restaurants, Toro in NYC, Coppa in Boston, and Toro in Boston, and the delicious chorizo he brought to use for breakfast wasn't too much of a surprise: He just wrote his first cookbook and it's all about cured meats, The New Charcuterie Cookbook.

His goal is to show people that making pate is just as easy as making meatloaf — "just lose the ketchup and add more kinds of meat," he says. "To write the recipes I was like, How would I tell my Dad, who isn't a chef, how to make this?, so that's what I did, I just walked through it all asking him."

The book's instructions for blood sausage, for example, are divided into three recipes: blood sausage for beginners, blood sausage for intermediates, and blood sausage for ninjas.

Watching Bissonnette go into ninja mode to cook breakfast was fascinating because he worked so cleanly. His ninja tool is a dough scraper, which he uses instead of the back of his knife to transfer food to the pan and to transfer trash to the trash. "One thing I think is really important for home cooks to learn is that the cleaner you are the more efficient you're going to be, and the more fun you'll have eating because you'll be eating in a clean kitchen." In fact, we couldn't even get him to leave before he had scrubbed down the entire range. Thanks chef.

8 Food Myths You Probably Believe

Sugar doesn’t make kids hyperactive and turkey doesn’t make you sleepy.

Turkey doesn't actually make you sleepy.

Turkey doesn't actually make you sleepy.

Turkey making you sleepy is one myth that gets repeated often around the festive season – and especially at Thanksgiving in the US. Turkey's supposed sleep-inducing properties were even mentioned in an episode of Seinfeld. But they don't hold up to scientific scrutiny.

Turkey contains the amino acid tryptophan, a building block for the hormones serotonin and melatonin, which help regulate sleep. And tryptophan has been shown to ease insomnia.

But the levels of tryptophan in turkey are not high enough to induce that effect, and are comparable to those in other meats. In their book Don't Swallow Your Gum (Penguin, 2009), Dr Aaron Carroll and Dr Rachel Vreeman write:

"The amount of tryptophan in a single 4-ounce serving of turkey (350 milligrams) is also lower than the amount typically used to induce sleep. The recommendations for tryptophan supplements to help you sleep are 500 to 1,000 milligrams."

It's not comfort food that makes you feel better.

It's not comfort food that makes you feel better.

After a tough day or a break-up it's often food we turn to for comfort. But according to a recent study published in the journal Health Psychology, it's time – not comfort food – that makes people feel better.

A hundred people watched a 20-minute film designed to make them sad and angry. The group who ate their specially chosen comfort food afterwards did have significant improvements in their mood, but no more than the groups who ate other foods or no food at all. From this, the study authors concluded: "You don't need comfort food to feel better; the mind will do the trick all on its own if you give it time."

However, if you do choose to cook and eat a family-size macaroni cheese in that time, it's entirely your own business.

It doesn't take seven years for chewing gum to work its way through you if you swallow it.

Gastroenterologist Roger Liddle from the Duke University School of Medicine told Scientific American: "Nothing would reside that long, unless it was so large it couldn't get out of the stomach or it was trapped in the intestine."

Most of what gum is made of is indigestible. Some components, such as the sweeteners, will break down, and the rest of the gum will pass through pretty much undisturbed.

Celery doesn't have negative calories.

Celery doesn't have negative calories.

Some foods – particularly celery – are touted as having "negative calories", meaning your body supposedly uses up more calories digesting them than you get from the food itself.

So let's look at the numbers: A large stick of celery has something like 10 calories, but Dr Tim Garvey, chair of the department of nutrition sciences at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, US, told the BBC that it only takes something like two calories to digest it. "In actuality there are no negative-calorie foods," he said.

A Guide To All The Reality Show References On The "Comeback" Season Premiere

0

“Well, reality TV has had quite the evolution.” If you’re a fan of The Comeback but not Bravo, here’s what you might have missed in the long-awaited return of the HBO comedy.

John P. Johnson / HBO

Reality television has come a long way since the first (and, for years, only) season of The Comeback savagely satirized the genre in 2005. The Season 2 premiere, which aired Nov. 9, is about playing catch-up with Valerie Cherish (Lisa Kudrow), but also with the type of series The Comeback mocks. For those who aren't as up on real reality shows, here's a guide to all the references in the first episode that you might have missed.

Bethenny Frankel

Bethenny Frankel

Valerie is excited to show off her infomercial because it reflects her as an entrepreneur like Bethenny Frankel, once and future Real Housewives of New York cast member. (Frankel will be rejoining the series for its seventh season.) More to the point, Frankel is the brains behind Skinnygirl cocktails, which Valerie misidentifies as "Skinny Margarita Gal."

Andy Cohen

Andy Cohen

"Who's Andy Cohen again?" Mark naively asks. "He's the Bravo guy," Val explains. Cohen is indeed "the Bravo guy": Specifically, he was head of programming until November 2013 and now serves as executive producer of the Real Housewives franchise. (And host of Watch What Happens: Live, of course.)

This WW1 Widow Still Wakes Up Every Morning Next To A Picture Of Her Soldier Husband In His Uniform

Dot Walker is one of the few remaining Britons who were married to a soldier who served in World War One. This Remembrance Sunday she’s thinking of her husband, who fought at the Battle of the Somme and was later a prisoner of war.

Dot Walker, 95, is one of the last remaining World War One widows.

Dot Walker, 95, is one of the last remaining World War One widows.

World War One widows are women whose deceased husbands fought between 1914 and 1918.

Dot's husband, Arthur, was a 16-year-old farm labourer from near York when he first tried to sign up to fight in the war by lying about his age in 1914.

At first Arthur was rejected, but he tried again, was successful and ended up joining the 15th Battalion of Yorkshire volunteer soldiers, known as the Leeds Pals.

By the end of the war almost all of them were dead.

“There wasn’t many of them left in his regiment, most of them were killed,” Dot explained on Saturday. “About two or three hundred of them were left by the end of the war, and there’d been thousands of them killed.”

Following a year's training in the Yorkshire Dales, Arthur and the rest of the Leeds Pals were sent to guard the Suez Canal in Egypt in late 1915.

After a few months in Egypt, Arthur’s regiment were posted to France, where they were to play a key role in the Battle of the Somme.

Over 1,000 Yorkshiremen in the Leeds Pals battalion went over the top of the trenches on the first day of the Somme, 1 July 1916. Many of them were friends, and they believed that sustained artillery bombardment of German positions meant they would have a free run across no man's land. They were wrong. Within 10 minutes the majority were killed.

The verdict of one soldier in the regiment was: "We were two years in the making and 10 minutes in the destroying.”

Arthur Walker was one of the few survivors.

This was the single sheet of paper that informed Arthur's family he had been taken prisoner in a German offensive.

After telling the family that the young soldier is "a credit to his mother", Arthur's officer states he and a group of fellow soldiers had been overcome by the advancing German army, and "your son is reported missing".

Arthur was taken to a prisoner-of-war camp by the German army, where he served out the rest of the war.

"He spent months as a prisoner of war," Dot recalls. She still keeps this letter by her bedside at her home in the Yorkshire village of Thornton-le-Clay.

The letters were an early form of mass communication and were sent by the King to all returning prisoners of war.

Unable to find work, Arthur briefly became a miner at Grimethorpe Colliery, before returning to his home village in the Vale of York.

Dot was born in 1919, just after the war ended, and married Arthur when she was 19. They were together for over 30 years, but rarely talked about his wartime experiences. Dot said he was a gentle man who would go quiet whenever asked about what it was like to fight on the Western Front.

But she said Arthur, who she described as a quiet man who played with his moustache and would not hurt anyone, always made a point of taking the entire family to Remembrance Day ceremonies on 11 November to honour his former colleagues.
