And it’s not even in color. What a ripoff.

PRNewsFoto/LIK USA / Via prnewswire.com

The work sold to a private collector, who also bought two other Lik works, "Illusion" and "Eternal Moods", for $2.4 million and $1.1 million respectively.

"The purpose of all my photos is to capture the power of nature and convey it in a way that inspires someone to feel passionate and connected to the image," Lik said in a press release.

"Certain textures and contours found in nature lend themselves beautifully to black and white photography," said Lik. "The intensity of contrasting light and dark spaces was surprising, but made for some of the most powerful images I've ever created."

"Phantom" was taken in Arizona's Antelope Canyon, an area routinely catalogued by photographers, both budding and professional, because of its curved rocks and beams of light.

We’re not sure what’s more magical: solving a Rubik’s cube in one second, or getting out of a speeding ticket.

Steven Brundage was driving home when he got stopped by the Scotia PD for speeding. According to Steven, the cop asked why he had cards in the car, "and I told him I was a magician. He then asked me to show him a magic trick."

Via youtube.com

First, Steven got out a Rubik's cube and solved it in twenty seconds, which impressed the Scotia police immensely.

But like any good magician, Steven had some more tricks up his sleeve. He mixed up the cube and then tossed it in the air, solving it in one second this time.

Meet The Adult Film Director Who's Trying To Change The Porn Industry

$

Award-winning Swedish director Erika Lust is making films based on sexual fantasies submitted through her website. Warning: The following is slightly NSFW.

Erika Lust / XConfessions

If you log onto XConfessions.com, you'll be directed to a massive, central trailer of NSFW images. But it's not an onslaught to eyes — instead of being an abrasive, split-second cut, each shot lingers for a few seconds. The images are delicately framed, but never censored.

The rest of the site is minimalist — no pop-ups, no side-ads of barely legal webcam girls or magic pills to make your penis grow 8 feet long. But in the middle of the homepage, there is a link, in bold, sleek lettering, that reads, "Share your sexual confessions here, and each month I'll choose the most thrilling to be turned into erotic short films."

The "I" here is Erika Lust, XConfessions.com's founder, who chooses two stories a month to adapt into indie-style short films.

Erika Lust / XConfessions

"It was when I was studying political science at Lund University in Sweden that I realized there was a serious lack of female voices in the adult film industry," Lust told BuzzFeed via email. The director of erotic films (which have earned her seven major awards) cites Linda Williams' Hard Core as the book that taught her "that porn is a discourse of human sexuality and can be used as a tool for sexual liberation."

"I wanted to redefine and re-establish the way of thinking about and making porn," Lust wrote. "I wanted to shake up a male-dominated industry. I wanted to give women a voice in porn."

So far, the stories in Lust's films have ranged from S&M-themed masturbation to Eurotrip lesbian threesomes to straight couples experimenting with cross-dressing for the first time. The chosen submissions have also been in a range of different languages.

"It has to stand out to me in terms of the locations, the characters, the tone, and the situations," Lust wrote of her criteria for selection. "It has to grab my attention and inspire me cinematically as well with a specific atmosphere, or unique set design or personality behind the story."

In the post, Curham said she was not able to give specific details about her involvement in the book for legal reasons but had decided to say something as her family had become distraught at the comments she was receiving on Twitter.

“Firstly, I did not agree to work on Girl Online to 'get rich',” she said.

“Neither did I do it to 'get famous'. People who know me know how ridiculous that accusation is.”

Curham said when she was offered the chance to help Sugg write her book she saw it as “an opportunity to help get important and empowering messages to her incredibly huge fanbase. Messages about self belief, anxiety, sexuality and – oh the irony – online hate."

She said she had had issues with how the project was managed and had expressed them on numerous occasions.

Shonda Rhimes is a visionary writer and producer whose successful shows — her creations Grey's Anatomy and Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder, which Rhimes executive produces — have changed the representation of women, LGBT people, and people of color on television. And on Wednesday, she accepted the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at the annual Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment Breakfast.

The event was packed with powerful executives, actors, and previous honorees. Tony Goldwyn, who plays Fitz on Scandal, began Rhimes' introduction — and gave way to a video message from first lady Michelle Obama, who called Rhimes "a friend." (She also confessed to being a Scandal addict.)

Rhimes took the podium to a standing ovation and delivered a moving speech in which she paid tribute to the women who went before her and cleared the way for her to create groundbreaking television.

Here is the speech in full.

A User's Guide To Dealing With Trolls On The Internet

$
0
0

Here is your hazmat suit for the toxic garbage dump known as the ‘net.

(Technically, an ogre, but let's just be chill about it.)

Dreamworks

2014 has been an especially bad year to exist as a human on the internet. It's felt as though a fog of animosity rolled in and engulfed all our interactions; almost no one was left completely untouched from some sort of awful interaction with a stranger online. As someone who has spent too much of her own time eating bugs from the rank waters of the internet swamp, I hope to share some advice on how to navigate through the fog.

First of all, real trolls aren't like you and me.

They're not just someone with a different opinion. Real trolls come from deep down in the swamps of the internet, where their bad attitudes have been preserved in the peat bogs for years. They come from places such as Reddit and late '90s-looking message boards and multiplayer online video games, where their most treasured pastime is hurling insults at one another for hours on end. Imagine the Ivan Drago training montage in Rocky IV, but instead of doing pull-ups in a lab, it's sitting on Reddit for, like, four years straight. They're Teflon.

[I should clarify the definition of troll as it applies to this post. From here out, we are talking about real honest-to-god trolls, not just "someone who disagrees with me."]

To be dreadfully honest, it doesn't look great for you: They are masters. They have been training all of their lives for this moment, and you're just some schmuck who decided to sign up for Twitter a few years ago to shoot some ideas off the dome. It is arrogant to think that you can win against them. It'd be like if you showed up to a law firm and asked to try a few cases because you watch The Good Wife.

It gets worse. These lunkheaded goons from the primordial internet ooze aren't just haphazardly hurling random insults at each other (or you, if you're an unlucky target). True trolls of the internet take their craft seriously, and spend hours analyzing how to argue. Think of the fedora atheists who love "debating" so much they have several subreddits devoted to it (r/DebateAnAntheist, r/DebateAChristian) and proudly post all the sick owns they deliver to their high school friends on Facebook. They obsess over terms like "logical fallacy" and "strawman argument" as if they believe they could be transported through time into the Scopes trial. They love discussing the art and science of internet arguing just as much as they love actually delivering sick owns on the 'net. They have been training for this moment their whole teen lives and, like Ivan Drago, they will break you.

The internet vs. you.

i.imgur.com / Via reddit.com

This is where I have to tell you the bad news: You will never win against them.

I'm sorry. This sucks. I wish I had something more hopefully to impart to you. The truth is, if you are reading this article on BuzzFeed dot com right now, you are probably already too well-adjusted to win an argument against a true internet troll. However, you are likely enough of an internet native that you have some experience with trolls or arguing on the internet. A recent Pew survey found that 40% of online adults have experienced some sort of harassment or name-calling, and 8% have been physically threatened. A YouGov survey found that 30% of adult men and 18% of adult women have "argued with someone about an opinion" on the internet.

However, of these descriptions of online harassment, only 38% said their harrasser was a stranger — a true internet troll. Friends, exes, co-workers, and even family were frequently the ones responsible for internet unkindness. Here's an example from Pew's survey: "my own brother calling me racist for not supporting Obama and for disagreeing with his policies."

This is clearly not a good situation, but there's an important distinction, here: Your brother is not an internet troll; he's just a guy who disagrees with you. You can disarm your libtard brother by reminding him of the time he crapped his pants at Disneyland. You cannot win against a real internet troll. You have zero hand.

So that's where I come in. I am here to help you get over your ego that keeps telling you have a chance to "win." There is no "win" here on the 'net.

The sooner you accept this, the happier you will be.

Consider this Wondermark comic about an annoying sea lion:

The dressing goes in first. This is so important! This guarantees that your salad ingredients don't get soggy.

Then go with a grain or a protein, or anything else big and chunky. This protects your more delicate ingredients from getting wet.

Then the fixings. Little things like shaved nuts, raisins, cheeses. The ingredients that you want to stay dry until juuuust before you eat it.

And if you have any leafy greens, they go in last. That way when you turn the Mason jar over and unload it all into a bowl, the greens will make the salad bed. Genius!

You want to mix textures and flavors. And ideally, you'll have a filling protein, something salty and crunchy, and something sweet and tangy. Here are some ideas from Earthbound Farm:

Ridley Scott's "Exodus: Gods And Kings" Offers An Embarrassingly Outdated View Of Race

$

The new Christian Bale–led Biblical film updates Moses in every way except the most important one.

Christian Bale in Exodus: Gods and Kings

Twentieth Century Fox

Exodus: Gods and Kings updates the story of Moses in every way except the one that would actually be gutsy: race.

Ridley Scott's latest film attempts to do for Moses what Batman Begins did for its title superhero — give its saga a grim, brawny overhaul and place it in a more realistic world. In place of a revamped Batmobile and other comic book trappings, it has a revamped parting of the Red Sea, with men confronting each other as the tide rushes back in in the form of massive waves. Its version of ancient Egypt has been lightly dredged in mud and dust, the royal spaces airy and spacious, and slave quarters cramped and dark. Moses starts the film not by being fished out of the Nile as a baby but all grown-up as Christian Bale, strapping on armor and accompanying his brother Ramses (Australian actor Joel Edgerton) into an arrow-, chariot-, and sword-filled fight with the Hittites.

While Moses has been cast as an action hero, later training the Israelites in the ways of guerrilla warfare, the religious aspect to his story has been softened, leaving open the possibility that his communications with God are simply delusions, and that there are scientific explanations for the plagues. And the language has been stripped of biblical floweriness, and modernized in ways that yield some inadvertent laugh lines — "From an economic standpoint alone, what you're asking is problematic, to say the least," Ramses tells Moses in response to his demands that the Israelites be treated as citizens or released.
