At Least 594 LGBT People Were Murdered In The Americas In A 15-Month Period

0
0

Four were killed by decapitation, according to a new report.

Tracy Robinson is the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights special rapporteur on LGBTI rights

oas.org / Via oas.org

A report released Wednesday identified 594 people believed to be LGBT were murdered between the beginning of 2013 and the end of March, 2014. The victims include four who were decapitated.

The count was compiled by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), which is an arm of the Organization of American States. In addition to the 594 killed, an additional 176 people survived "serious attacks." The IACHR said the real count of LGBT people killed or assaulted during this period is likely higher than these figures suggest, because the majority of countries in the Americas do not track hate crimes targeting LGBTI people. Because governments do so little documentation of such crimes, this count was largely compiled from media accounts and reports by activist organizations, and many crimes may have gone unreported.

People perceived to be transgender women and gay men were the primary targets of violence, and young people were especially at risk. Among the transgender women identified in the report, 80% were under 35. The report notes that "trans women and other gender non-conforming persons are often targeted by law enforcement agents, who tend to act upon prejudice and assume they are criminals."

The report suggests violence against LBT women may be especially underreported, in part because they often suffer violence from family members.

The post-credit sequels sequence

What is better than one self-aware movie sequel of an adaptation of a bygone '80s TV show? How about a credits sequence that previews, that’s right, 21 more sequels, including 25 Jump Street: Semester at Sea, 31 Jump Street: Ninja Academy, 39 Jump Street: The Electronic Game, and 43 Jump Street: Mariachi School.

Yes, that is definitely better.

Howard the Duck returns to the movies

There is much about Marvel Studios' latest film that runs counter to expectations. This is, after all, a summer blockbuster — the highest grossing movie in the U.S. this year, in fact — that features a foul-mouthed raccoon and a talking tree who can only say "I am Groot." But director James Gunn saved his strangest twist for the movie's post-credits scene, when we learn that Taneleer Tivan (Benicio Del Toro) has been keeping a talking, drinking, cigar-chomping duck named Howard in his vast collection. It's a nod to Marvel's cult comic Howard the Duck — and a small helping of cinematic redemption after the character's infamous 1986 live-action flop. After so many Marvel Studios movies with post-credits scenes that point to the next step in their vast cinematic universe, it was an unexpected delight to see Guardians wrap things up with such a cheeky lark.

Marvel Studios

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The fate of Gwen Stacy

In a way, this is almost the anti-OMG moment. Gwen Stacy’s death is regarded as one of the seminal moments in modern comic book history, and paparazzi photos of Emma Stone on the set of the film wearing Stacy’s iconic coat from that 1973 comic book issue had long since primed fans to expect her untimely demise. Still, this death stung, in no small part because Stone had made Stacy into such a vital character, and her undeniable chemistry with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man was the best thing about the darker, grittier, and ungainly second go at the Spider-Man movie franchise. Killing her off was a genuine, gutsy loss.

House Foreign Affairs Chairman: Average Cuban Won't Benefit From Better U.S. Relations

0
0

“The problem in the Cuban system is that when foreign companies go in there, they write the check out to the account controlled by Fidel Castro and by his brother Raul.”

w.soundcloud.com

California Rep. Ed Royce, the chairman of the House of Representatives' Committee on Foreign Affairs, said that the relaxing of restrictions placed on Americans traveling to Cuba and the normalization of relations with the Communist nation will only lead to American money funding the Castro regime.

The California Republican rejected President Obama's comparison to previous normalizations with Vietnam and China in that the Cuban people would not be receiving the bulk of American money.

"Well, it was, and of course what we would have liked to see in that negotiation would be something like the negotiations that went on with Vietnam, that ensured that if we were gonna plow — or change policy and allow money to directly go into the country, that the workers would be the beneficiaries," said Royce on KNXAM radio Wednesday.

"The problem in the Cuban system is that when foreign companies go in there, they write the check out to the account controlled by Fidel Castro and by his brother Raul. It's the same with North Korea," Royce said. "And so it's very different — the president said this was like Vietnam and China, but they're completely different. In Vietnam and in China, the workers can actually get a paycheck. In North Korea and Cuba, the check goes to the regime, and the workers get as little as five percent of it. So it's not empowering the Cuban people, and that's why the negotiation really wasn't done properly."

"And that's what's different here," he added. "That's why we're upset with the outcome of the negotiation — the fact that there was very little given from the Cuban side in this negotiation, from Castro's side."

Royce said the average Cuban would not be benefiting from the normalized relation and the Castro regime would in turn use U.S. money to fund anti-Democratic campaigns in South America.

"My concern here is that by leaving this in the hands of Raul and Fidel Castro — they run the state security apparatus — two things are going to happen: the workers are gonna continue to get five percent of this, which means the average Cuban is not gonna benefit. But, if there's more largesse, well, the Cuban state is gonna get more. And that means that they're gonna use it for anti-democratic campaigns from Venezuela to Bolivia — all of their activities in Latin America that Cuba is engaged in — they need foreign exchange to do it. So that's sort of the issue here."

GOP Senator Wants To Host Re-Election Fundraiser At A Screening Of "The Interview"

And he loves Team America.

w.soundcloud.com

Republican Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois said he's "pretty disappointed" in Sony Pictures' decision to pull The Interview from theaters, adding that he wants to have his first big re-election fundraiser at a screening of the film.

"I would say one thing — I'm pretty disappointed in Sony Pictures decision to pull The Interview under pressure from North Korea," Kirk said Thursday on WBEZ radio. "I would say that I'm gonna be trying to hold the first big Kirk for Senate fundraiser at a screening of The Interview, so that everybody shows the North Koreans that you cannot edit what we want to see and do in the United States, under the First Amendment."

Kirk added he hoped the movie was "a smash hit," citing the movie Team America from the creators of South Park.

"It was a terrible lesson to terrorists, to give them what they wanted — that we should, as Americans under the First Amendment, we should never have to ask North Korea for permission as to what movie we can — just think of a previous really good movie, that was Team America: World Police, that was really funny about North Korea. And your birthright as an American citizen — you never have to ask the North Koreans for permission for what movie you can see. I hope that now all the media about this movie makes it a smash hit, and that we see many more movies like it, and teach the North Koreans a lesson about what Americans can and cannot do."

22 People That F**king Love Christmas More Than You

Ranking The Characters On HBO's “The Wire” By Likability

0
0

“Ain’t nobody got nothing to say about a 40-degree day.”

HBO

Twelve years ago, perhaps the greatest series ever to grace television made its debut.

HBO had a gem on its hands in The Wire, though almost no one watched while it was on the air, a reality that kept the series constantly on the chopping block. Thankfully, enough people tuned in to keep the gritty show airing for five seasons.

The Wire, created by David Simon, highlighted the grim reality facing some of the nation's largest cities. Places that once were the crown jewels of industry are now dying slow, painful deaths that no one — police forces, hallowed halls of academia, or political chambers — can help avert. (A reason, perhaps, for the lack of audience? The stories are a little too close to home, and play out like a too-real reality show you badly want canceled.)

Still, even six years after its ending, the show sparks debate about its larger-than-life-characters, who felt so real, it's almost difficult to distinguish fact from fiction. Smartly, HBO is bringing The Wire back to life, in a manner of speaking. Starting Dec. 26, the network will marathon all five seasons of the series, this time airing a remastered HD cut of the show. There won't be any new episodes or an alternate ending, but this is a chance for fans to re-watch the show — or check it out for the first time — in a new, sharper format.

In honor of all of us Wire fans being forced to live on our couches for days this holiday season (thanks, HBO), and some of you newcomers who are playing catchup on the show you heard about but never watched, here are the cast members of every season of the show, ranked from least to most likable.

Let the rebutting begin!

The Pew Research Center crunched the numbers and revealed Wednesday that upper-income families have almost seven times as much wealth as middle-income families and 70 times as much wealth as lower-income families.

Pew found that 46% of American families fall into the middle tier, while about 33% are lower-income families. The remaining 21% are upper-income families.
