DREAMer Activists Interrupt Rick Perry, Chris Christie Speeches: "We Are Americans"

“We are Americans.” Perry and Christie were speaking at the Iowa Freedom Summit, which features appearances by a number of top 2016 candidates, and is being hosted by Steve King, the Republican known for his strict views on undocumented immigration. Two DREAMers were arrested.

Activists began shouting during the former Texas governor's speech on Saturday night:

The DREAMers included national immigration activists Erika Andiola and Cesar Vargas, who made the trip to Iowa to join with other DREAMers from across the country including Texas and New Jersey, which helps explain why Perry and Christie were the two interrupted. Vargas and Marco Malagon from Texas, were arrested afterwards, New Jersey DREAMer Giancarlo Tello told BuzzFeed News. They have since been released.

Malagon was the one yelling, "We are Americans."

"Marco is an undocumented person from Texas and Perry is the guy who was governor, the guy who sent the National Guard to the border," Tello said, of Perry's response to the unaccompanied minors crisis from Central Malagon. He said Malagon has a child on the way.

"He wanted to confront Perry, he wanted to represent his community, his family and his unborn son and try to ensure their safety," he added.

The activists were holding up signs that said, "Deportable?" a reference to a much-maligned Steve King tweet before the State of the Union address, complaining that Michelle Obama's guest was a DREAMer.

Basically, modern archers are using unwieldy quivers instead of holding their arrows in their hands like badasses, are shooting from the wrong side of the bow, and are basically fucking terrible compared to Lars Andersen.

Dennis Rodman Doesn't Believe North Korea Hacked Sony Over "The Interview"

The former NBA star turned Kim Jong-Un’s BFF also said he’s willing to take Seth Rogen on a trip to the hermit kingdom.

The U.S. government is adamant that North Korea hacked Sony Pictures in retaliation against the controversial film The Interview, but Dennis Rodman isn’t buying it.

The former NBA star, who is now a close pal to North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, said he doesn't think the hermit kingdom would go to the trouble of hacking Sony over a comedy film that depicted a plot to assassinate Kim.

"How many movies have there been attacking North Korea?" he told The Hollywood Reporter. "And they never hacked those. North Korea is going to hack a comedy, a movie that is really nothing? I can't see that happening. Of all the companies… really? Over a movie?!"

Rodman has made three trips to North Korea to meet with his "friend" Kim. He has called his meetings with the despotic leader "basketball diplomacy."

KCNA / Reuters

Rodman is currently promoting a documentary film entitled Dennis Rodman's Big Bang in Pyongyang, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film documents a trip he took with a team of basketball players to the country.

Rodman added that he didn't really think it was "cool" that The Interview depicts the assassination of Kim.

He said that representatives for the film's star Seth Rogen reached out to him in 2013 about the movie. Rodman said that he thinks they may have wanted him to consult or appear in the film, but he didn't get back to them in time.

However, Rodman said he would still be willing to take Rogen on a trip to North Korea if he is interested.

"I would ask Seth and all those involved in the movie to go to North Korea with me," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "And then do an interview with me about the movie."

The Blackness Of This Year’s Sundance Movies Is At Odds With The Audience’s Whiteness

0
0

This is what it feels like to be one of the only black people in the audience while watching gripping black stories at the film festival. “Power to the people!”

Pirkle Jones/The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution / Via Sundance.org

PARK CITY, Utah — As a Sundance Film Festival newbie, the most striking thing to me so far — especially as someone who covers Black Hollywood — is that this year's lineup offers a series of films that capture landmark black experiences and is serving them to a predominantly white audience.

These films speak directly to the lives of my fellow tribe members today and to the struggles that our parents and grandparents fought so hard to live through and overcome. It's important for nonbrown viewers to witness the heartbreaking civil rights battles of singer Nina Simone, or the contemporary reality of being killed for being a black teen who blared loud music at a gas station, or the affecting footage of the valiant rise and heartbreaking fall of the Black Panther Party, all the more poignant considering its biggest supporters included a largely nonblack base.

That film — The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution — is excellent. It's the latest from director Stanley Nelson, who came to the festival in 2010 to premiere Freedom Riders, a moving documentary that highlighted the story behind the hundreds of civil rights activists who faced down segregation. In Nelson's latest film, the women's voices are as vital and important as those of their male counterparts, something not often seen in documentaries about times of social change. The fact that these women aren't tied to their husbands or lovers, but are seen as entities of their own, makes The Black Panthers all the more exceptional.

I was practically still shaking the morning after viewing the documentary, overwhelmed by the idea that young people were able to assemble and create an organization that caused high-ranking government officials to tremble and respond in — at times — violent ways.

Pirkle Jones/The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution / Via Sundance.org

Nelson, who is known for exploring African-American experiences in telling documentaries, is a smart man, and he's making strategic decisions in presenting The Black Panthers. This documentary will open the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles after it leaves Sundance, the former festival being a space where such a film seems meant to have its first viewing. After its festival run, Nelson plans for the film to have a limited theatrical release at some point, before landing on PBS in February 2016.

Coming to the Sundance Film Festival first — an event where you can almost count the number of black participants on one hand — was the bold choice, and one with a greater meaning: The real goal here is to have as many people see a film like this as possible — black, white, or otherwise.

"About six weeks ago, we brought some activists together at the Ford Foundation and had them look at the film and said, 'What do you think? Is this a film you can use? Or is it something that's a little bit too scary?' All of them said they see this as a film about young people realizing the power that they had," Nelson said in a Q&A after his documentary premiered to a packed house on Jan. 23. "It was very clear it didn't work for the Panthers, and there were mistakes made. What's going on in this country is amazing. It could be the start of some real change. I think that hopefully we can get this film out to people and more and more people can use it. That's our hope."

The Movie That Proves Why Trans Actors Should Play Trans Roles

With humor and humanity, Tangerine vividly captures a world unknown to most audiences.

Alexandra (Mya Taylor) and Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) in Tangerine

Augusta Quirk

PARK CITY, UTAH — Too often, the focus at the annual Sundance Film Festival is on stars we already know telling stories we've already heard, usually involving white upper-middle-class ennui. But Tangerine, which made its debut at the fest this weekend, is none of those things.

It takes almost no time at all for the movie to announce itself as one of the most vital films at Sundance this year. It opens on transgender prostitutes Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) and Alexandra (Mya Taylor) splitting a doughnut at Donut Time, a real shop in Los Angeles, on Christmas Eve. Sin-Dee just got out of a 28-day stint in jail, and she is anxious to tell her best friend news about her boyfriend Chester (James Ransone), who also happens to be their pimp.

But before Sin-Dee can make her announcement, Alexandra blurts out that Chester's been cheating on her — and with a cis woman. That is all the spark Sin-Dee, who speaks in a torrent of lisp-y fury, needs to send her charging out of Donut Time on a rampage to find Chester. As she tears through the particularly seedy stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard that Donut Time calls home, the screen explodes with a blast of vivid color and angry techno music, the camera swooping past Sin-Dee to take in the strip malls, pawn shops, and liquor stores that line the street. Alexandra, who is as calm and measured as Sin-Dee is a dervish of scattered energy, rolls her eyes and chases after her friend, pleading with her not to cause drama, knowing full well that is exactly what is going to happen.

And at the end of that roughly five-minute sequence, I was grinning with delight.

With a cast of trans actors playing trans characters — still all too rare in feature filmmaking — Tangerine brings a world unknown to most audiences to radiant life with humor and humanity. Director Sean Baker (Starlet) and his co-writer Chris Bergoch treat the fact that Sin-Dee and Alexandra are trans prostitutes as just that — a fact, not a gimmick or a "theme" that needs hand-holding explanation.

Sin-Dee especially is allowed to be viciously selfish. When she finds Dinah (Mickey O'Hagan), the "fish" who has been sleeping with her man, Sin-Dee drags the half-barefoot woman through Hollywood, stopping only for the occasional beating. And, in Rodriguez's hands, we also get a peek inside the hurt and need Sin-Dee tries so hard to hide; we can love her while never, ever wanting to cross her.

Baker and Bergoch are just as humanely unsparing with Razmik (Karren Karagulian), a married Armenian cab driver who has a particular affection for — and, it seems, addiction to — the trans prostitutes he passes by every day on the job. Through Razmik and his family, the filmmakers explore the costs of the lives all of their characters are leading without ever passing judgment on them. Though the acting in Tangerine can be a bit rough, less prone to soulful revelation than immediate action, that became, for me at least, part of the film's marvelously entertaining charm.
