Jet.com Gets A Big New Funding Round — Now All It Has To Do Is Launch

The new online retail project from Diapers.com founder Marc Lore is getting plenty of hype from investors, even though it has yet to go live.

Jet / Via Jet.com

It turns out that promising to undercut Amazon — and the rest of the retail industry — in what could easily become the mother of all price wars is an attractive proposition to big investors.

Jet.com, the online retailing venture that promises to always offer the cheapest prices on the internet, announced on Wednesday evening it has raised a new $140 million round of venture capital, on top of the $80 million it had previously raised.

The fresh cash "will help us accelerate our ability to deliver on our core promise of radical price innovation in e-commerce," said founder Marc Lore in a statement posted to his blog. "We believe that there is big opportunity to deliver meaningful value to mass consumers by optimizing the underlying economics of online shopping and unbundling the embedded retail costs that drive up price."

The funding values the company at around $600 million, according to the Wall Street Journal, which was first to report the round.

That's a healthy valuation for an online retailer whose core promise is being extremely cheap, and particularly for one that has still not launched. It has signed up over 350,000 "Jet Insiders" who will have early access to try the site. It will open sign-up for the general public in the late spring.

Jet will operate as a members-only online service, charging an annual fee for subscribers to access its online marketplace. The company says it has developed a proprietary software system that will apply ever-increasing discounts to baskets of goods from third-party retailers that are plugged into its system.

"Jet is able to dynamically adjust prices in real time in response to the unique composition of a shopper's basket, always maximizing for cost-savings," said Lore. "Customers are seamlessly guided towards orders that are economically more efficient to fulfill. And because Jet only profits off the annual membership fee, the full benefit of that efficiency gets passed back to customers in the form of lower prices."

As BuzzFeed News reported in January, the company's big promise is simple: It will always be cheaper than all of the competition, including Amazon. Now all it has to do is launch, and deliver on that promise, and not get killed by Amazon in the process.

Thirty-two people died after the cruise ship struck a reef near the Italian island of Giglio in 2012. Capt. Francesco Schettino, 54, was found guilty of manslaughter.

An Italian court on Wednesday sentenced the captain of the Costa Concordia to 16 years in prison for his role in the 2012 disaster that left 32 people dead.

Prosecutors had sought a sentence of 26 years for Francesco Schettino, who they said brought the cruise liner too close to the shore in an attempt to impress passengers, then failed to promptly evacuate the ship when it struck a reef, NBC News reported. He left the ship before passengers and crew had been evacuated, and ultimately, 32 people died.

Schettino admitted some responsibility in the disaster, but denied responsibility for the deaths, Reuters reported.

In a speech to the court, he said he had been made a scapegoat for the disaster. Schettino may still appeal the verdict and prison sentence.

"All the responsibility has been loaded on to me with no respect for the truth or for the memory of the victims," he said, according to the BBC.

Cruise operator Costa Cruises has paid a more than $1 million fine, and damages will also be paid to the families of the victims.

Italy's Top Court: No Right To Marriage For Same-Sex Couples

$

A ruling Wednesday is at least the third time the judiciary has called on the legislature to provide same-sex couples with legal recognition since 2010.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, February 3, 2015

Remo Casilli / Reuters

Italy's highest court ruled on Wednesday that same-sex couples had no right to marry under current law, but said Parliament had a duty to pass legislation that would fulfill their right to "protected status," reported the Italian newspaper La Stampa.

The ruling came in the case of a couple from Rome who were turned away by a registrar in 2012 when they sought to marry. The couple argued that this was discrimination that violated the Italian constitution and the European Charter of Human Rights. But the court ruled that while the couple had a right to legal protection, these documents did not create a right to marriage.

The relatively weak position of the courts and the political influence of the Vatican has made Italy the most difficult battle ground for marriage-equality advocates in Western Europe. Italy is the only country in Western Europe that does not have even some form of civil union status available to same-sex couples; most have full marriage equality, with the major exception of Germany.

Italian courts have ruled at least twice since 2010 that same-sex couples have partnership rights, but they have also consistently held that it was beyond the power of the judiciary to create that status for them. La Stampa quoted the court as ruling Wednesday that there was the "need for a timely intervention from the legislature" to give "recognition" to same-sex couples based on language in the constitution entitling citizens to a "common core of rights and duties of assistance and solidarity to the emotional relationships of couples."

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said last year that he wanted civil union legislation to be voted on by September of 2014, but it has so far stalled in Parliament. Several Italian mayors have been trying to force the legislature's hands, transcribing the marriages of Italians married to their same-sex partners abroad or creating special city registries for same-sex couples who cannot marry under federal rules.
