A Woman Wrote An Open Letter To The Man Behind Her On A Plane Who Smelled Like "The Anus Of Satan"

You may have had a bad flight, but you’ve never had a bad flight like this.

Lau Mun Yee is a 24-year-old from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and she recently published an open letter to a guy sitting behind her on an AirAsia flight from Singapore to Sydney, Australia.

Lau published her letter to "Passenger 15A" on SGAG and included this snapshot of his feet.

Dear passenger 15A,

You do not know me but I was seated in front of you during the flight from Singapore to Sydney on April 12th.

What I had initially thought to be a routine flight turned out to be a once in a lifetime experience – and it was all because of you.

I am writing this letter to thank you personally.

Being the cheapskate Asian that I am, I did not pay extra for a seat next to the emergency exit.

Though it offered more legroom, I couldn't be bothered to read the special safety procedures. The last thing I would want is to compromise the lives of all the innocent passengers because I do not know how to open the airplane door.

Despite my common economy seat, you offered me a full back massage by repeatedly kicking the back of chair. To date, I have yet to regain full mobility of the lower half of my body. But since I am single, I suppose I don't have much use for it anyway.

I did not pay for the in-flight entertainment package and I was worried that I might get bored. But my concerns were unnecessary. You were talking so loudly, as if your friend was seated in the cargo hold rather than right next to you.

Perhaps she's hard of hearing? This might strike you as odd but for the first time in my life, I wished I had a hearing impairment too.

Also, could you tell me where you bought those obnoxious snacks? I assume that they must have been delicious cause you rip one open every 30 minutes.

Thanks for the loud rustling and chewing ambient sounds!

At this point, I thought, "It can't get any better than this." But what I had meant as a rhetorical question, you took as a challenge.

For immediately, my nose was assaulted by a putrid smell of death and decay.

The stench was so strong that I turned to check if the old lady seated next to me was still breathing.

It was so nice of you to take off your shoes and put your feet between my seat and the plane window. It must have taken considerable effort – it was a small space but you stuck it as close to my face as you possibly could.

Your kindness moves me.

The sun is rising above the horizon; the sky is bleeding crimson and gold. But I cannot turn to gaze at this everyday miracle because every time I do, I smell the anus of Satan.

I had half the mind to pull down the oxygen mask above me. But then I remembered that I was flying on a budget airline, so I'd probably have to pay extra for that.

Did you know that you have made me a more religious person?

I have said more prayers in that eight-hour flight than I have in my entire life.

I was torn between asking God for strength to endure the rest of the journey and, "SWEET GUAN YIN MA, TAKE ME HOME!"

This experience has been so memorable that I am writing this from my therapist's office. I have also signed up for ten more sessions to talk about it.

Thank you once again.

Insincerely yours,
Passenger 14A

53 Signs Your Boyfriend Is Really Three Children In A Trenchcoat

$

Is he scared of commitment because he is actually three children standing on each others’ shoulders and wearing a trenchcoat?

Thinkstock

1. The only time he ever posts selfies are when he's with you.

2. If you have a bad day, he doesn't seem to have enough emotional maturity for you to really open up to.

3. He also struggles to communicate his feelings to you.

4. He only ever wears a trenchcoat.

5. His understanding of your needs is limited.

6. And it would be nice if he spent more time with you.

7. He's exceptionally tall.

8. Well over 6 feet, in fact.

9. Which is strange, because his shoulders are very narrow.

10. And his feet are incredibly small.

11. You seem to have very different ideas of what romance means.

12. He doesn't seem keen to share experiences with you.

13. He refuses to bend at the waist.

14. He never makes any of those small, significant, sentimental gestures.

15. It's awkward when you try to split the bill with him.

16. His face looks very youthful.

17. Mainly because he struggles to grow facial hair.

18. His voice sounds so very deep, like Christian Bale's Batman.

19. Except occasionally, when it is suddenly very high.

20. You worry about being able to honestly tell him things about your personal history, concerned that he might judge you.

21. You can clearly see the outline of three small children under his trenchcoat.

22. You rarely see him after 9 PM, as he always has an excuse to go home early.

23. You've also never actually seen where he lives, or ever met his family.

24. He doesn't like talking about his job to you.

25. When he does, it often seems to be vague, especially when he describes his "business office" and his "boss meetings".

26. He struggles to calm you down when you get stressed.

27. He is keen on going to see R-rated movies, as though when he's with you is the only time he can.

28. It's all he ever seems to suggest, except for going to the park.

29. He doesn't like TV, as he claims he isn't represented.

30. Except Bojack Horseman.

31. He's overprotective of his phone.

32. Often he doesn't remember important anniversaries, meaning you don't always feel as though he is committed to you.

33. Sometimes, even though he's clearly not laughing, you can hear muffled laughing.

34. Like there is someone nearby, hiding, and laughing.

35. A soft, almost inaudible, stifled giggle.

36. Then he'll murmur "Shut up," under his breath, but it'll only get louder.

37. He really does only ever seem to be wearing the same, extremely long, trenchcoat.

38. People point at him in the street.

39. They often look confused, and they laugh.

40. While you try to ignore the haters, you can hear them say things like "Is that three small children pretending to be an adult?" and "Look at those children in a trenchcoat."

41. It's made even harder to ignore because he walks so unsteadily, often wobbling.

42. Once, he fell over, and you could clearly see three small children stumbling around in the trenchcoat, attempting to get back onto each others shoulders, only for him to fall over again. When he eventually got up, his trenchcoat was backwards.

43. He never seems completely comfortable around you.

44. Your friends have told you he is three small children in a trenchcoat.

45. They once had an intervention to tell you this.

46. As did your family.

47. In fact, your mother wept as she begged you to notice.

48. And your sister just kept yelling at you to tell you how stupid you were.

49. Your dad kept silent, just staring out the window, absentmindeedly toying with a cigar and sobbing.

50. Your boyfriend denied being three children in a trenchcoat when you asked him.

51. But he was clearly trying to avoid laughing.

52. Later, he said explicitly that he was three children in a trenchcoat, but you refused to believe him.

53. Sometimes, he refuses to accept that your feelings are valid.

Why Salmonella Outbreaks Spin Out Of Control

A new Frontline documentary explores how inadequate rules for dealing with salmonella in poultry can prolong outbreaks.

Irwin Fedriansyiah / Associated Press

Salmonella sickens more than 1 million Americans each year and hospitalizes more people than any other foodborne illness. Yet for all these problems, salmonella has gotten surprisingly little attention from the U.S. government, a new Frontline investigation shows.

One major problem that the documentary points out: Salmonella contamination alone is not enough to trigger a food recall. While the USDA deems harmful bacteria — such as certain strains of E. coli — to be "adulterants," giving the agency the authority to prevent the sale of contaminated products, it does not classify salmonella that way. That means the government does not have the authority to recall a product solely on the basis of salmonella contamination— a decision that is left largely to companies.

Frontline's investigation shows how companies' reluctance to act has lead to widespread illness. Salmonella Heidelberg infected 634 people in 29 states from March 2013 to July 2014. The documentary, "The Trouble With Chicken," premieres Tuesday on PBS and at pbs.org/frontline.

"We have a government that says it will protect us, but the things it's protecting us from are quite complex, and the way they're doing it is behind the times," Frontline correspondent David Hoffman told BuzzFeed News. "The film shows that the government has a very narrow understanding of its authority to demand a recall."

Frontline provided an exclusive clip to BuzzFeed News in which Mike Robach, a vice president at Cargill, describes the USDA's outmoded inspection practices, which focus on physical abnormalities such as bruises or smells in poultry rather than bacterial infections. Cargill recalled 36 million pounds of ground turkey in 2011 due to possible contamination from salmonella Heidelberg.

youtube.com

Government testing sometimes has proven ineffective in identifying contamination. For instance, according to data obtained by BuzzFeed News and provided to Frontline, in the three years leading up to the 2013 Foster Farms outbreak, more than 500 samples taken at four of the company's production plants failed to detect salmonella.

Until recently, inspectors typically looked at whole birds rather than poultry parts — such as breasts and wings — even though parts account for 80% of the poultry sold in the U.S., according to Frontline. Realizing that salmonella levels were higher in these cut-up parts, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service proposed new standards for testing for salmonella in January and just began regularly testing poultry parts in March.

The need to control outbreaks is becoming more important as bacteria develop resistances to antibiotics, making them harder to treat once people are sick.

The USDA has not declared salmonella an adulterant, but it is updating its rules for poultry inspection. "The United States has been relying on a poultry inspection model that dates back to 1957, while rates of foodborne illness due to Salmonella and Campylobacter remain stubbornly high," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a release last year.

A USDA spokesperson wrote in an email to BuzzFeed News: "Currently, USDA is placing tighter Salmonella standards on the poultry industry than ever before to target not just some but all strains of Salmonella." It says it is requiring companies to do additional testing, placing inspectors at different points in food facilities and testing poultry parts in addition to whole birds.

For now, consumers remain advised to make sure they thoroughly cook their chicken and turkey to 165 degrees before eating it.

This is Sudan, the last male Northern White Rhino in the world, pictured in April. The subspecies has nearly been wiped out of existence by the lucrative rhino horn black market. There are only five females left in the world.

Sudan is cared for at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya and guarded by a team of rangers who also monitor the 90,000-acre private conservation area.

Scientists are exploring options for saving the Northern White Rhino, including artificial insemination or cross-breeding the females with other rhino sub-species, followed by breeding the offspring back into pure Northern White Rhinos.

BuzzFeed News spoke to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya.

This Map Shows Where In Europe Trans People Have Rights

$

Julia Ehrt, executive director of Transgender Europe, said: “A triad of political leadership, legal reform and positive awareness raising measures is urgently needed to improve the living situation of trans people in Europe.”

Transgender people might be more visible than ever, but across much of Europe having their gender identity recognised by law remains either impossible, or beset by obstacles.

The map above, produced by the human rights organisation Transgender Europe, shows which countries offer a basic right to trans people: to have their gender identity legally recognised.

The countries in blue – which include the UK – are those where the state will recognise the sex you have transitioned to. The countries in brown offer no such recognition at all. And those in red demand that in order to get such official recognition, you have to be sterilised first – and then provide evidence of the procedure. Without that, you may have (for example) been living as a woman for years, but as far as the state is concerned, you are a man.

In total, of Europe's 51 independent states, 37 legally recognise the gender identity of trans people, but 23 of those demand proof of sterilisation first. A further 12 will only recognise the sex assigned at birth, forever disregarding the gender of a trans person.

Transgender Europe

The research by Transgender Europe also produced a wealth of more detailed findings about the differing rights of trans people across the continent. The group found that:

* Only Malta and Denmark recognise the gender of trans people without a mental health diagnosis of "Gender Identity Disorder" or some kind of psychological evaluation.

* Thirty-eight states have no specific recognition of transphobic hate crimes.

* Twenty-two states have discrimination protection for trans people – and seven of those introduced this in the last year.

The study, which can be downloaded here, compared policies and laws for trans people in 22 different areas, including asylum, employment discrimination, hate speech laws, goods and services discrimination, and whether official documents can be changed to register gender identity.

It concluded that four states (Andorra, Kosovo, Monaco, and San Morino) had no policies or legal protections in any of the 22 categories. A further six (Armenia, Russia, Turkey, Ireland, Ukraine, and Lithuania) had fewer than five. As BuzzFeed News has reported, Russia has now begun to draft legislation that would reduce these protections further, by closing a legal loophole in its anti–same-sex marriage legislation to prohibit trans people from marrying.

“Trans youth have the same need and right as their peers to grow up in a supporting and loving environment, but they face a multitude of disadvantages like exclusion, discrimination and violence," said Alecs Recher, co-chair of Transgender Europe. "Protecting trans and gender-diverse children and youth, e.g. by making legal gender recognition accessible for them and by not labelling them as mentally ill, should be a primary concern for all.”

The study also highlighted the states offering the best legal frameworks for trans people. The UK, Spain, Malta, Croatia, Belgium, and Germany had more than 17 of the 22 recommended policies in place, and Portugal and Norway had 15. No country, however, had all 22.

"Trans youth have the same need and right as their peers to grow up in a supporting and loving environment, but they face a multitude of disadvantages like exclusion, discrimination, and violence," said Alecs Recher, co-chair of Transgender Europe. "Protecting trans and gender-diverse children and youth, e.g. by making legal gender recognition accessible for them and by not labelling them as mentally ill, should be a primary concern for all.”

The report also examined the frequency of transphobic hate crimes, including violence and murder.

It found that in the last seven years, the murder of 94 trans and gender-nonconforming people has been reported across 14 countries. Of those killed, 12% were under the age of 20.

However, the overwhelming majority of reported murders of trans people since 2008 have taken place outside of Europe – especially in Brazil, but also elsewhere in the Americas, including the USA.

The research showed that shooting was the most common form of execution, followed by stabbing and beating.

HERE ARE THE TOP STORIES

At least 6 people died and dozens were injured in an Amtrak train derailment near Philadelphia.

The train, which carried 238 passengers and five crew members, was en route from Washington, D.C., to New York City. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said late Tuesday that five people were confirmed dead in the derailment as crews continued to search through the wreckage. A sixth fatality was confirmed Wednesday morning by hospital officials. About 60 people were sent to hospitals following the incident. As of late Tuesday night, officials did not know what caused the crash.

And a little extra.

If you’re interested in the U.S. rail system, Simon van Zuylen-Wood explores in The Atlantic how the U.S. passenger rail “fell behind its European and East Asian counterparts.”

Senate Democrats shut down the Obama administration’s trade bill.

A group of pro-trade Democrats unexpectedly broke with President Obama yesterday to block a bill that would grant him “fast track” authority to finish negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a 12-nation trade and regulatory deal in the Asia-Pacific that would establish the world’s largest free trade zone, according to Reuters. “Fast track authority” would allow Obama to negotiate the trade deals and Congress would vote to approve or reject them, but would not be allowed to amend them.

Yesterday’s failed vote is “a victory for unions, activists, and progressive lawmakers,” and is “one of Obama’s biggest defeats in recent memory,” BuzzFeed News D.C. bureau chief John Stanton writes. Opponents say the trade deal would hurt U.S. jobs.

And a little extra.

The in-fighting over the trade bill is complicated. So we asked BuzzFeed News D.C. bureau chief John Stanton two quick questions to help us sort out what’s going on.

Why did some Democrats oppose the bill?

STANTON: A couple of things were at play in the Senate. First, the Democratic Party is deeply, deeply divided on trade issues generally, but even those who favor these sorts of trade deals are leery of getting crosswise with labor and environmental groups, especially when they see no political upside to supporting an agreement.

That leads us to the other big issue: Obama did a really bad job of selling not only Democrats, but the public, on the deals. There just wasn’t ever the momentum behind this that you’d have expected. Partially that’s because he has a pretty strained relationship with Senate Democrats already, but I think they underestimated the general suspicion — rightly or wrongly — in the public when it comes to trade deals.

What does this mean for the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal?

STANTON: Unclear in the long-term, but I don’t see a realistic way forward in the next few weeks. Even if they find a way through the Senate, which is not particularly likely, in the House there’s both deep Republican and Democratic opposition, especially to the Trade Promotion Authority provisions that will make it very difficult for Speaker John Boehner to move it.

WE’RE KEEPING AN EYE ON

Syrian investigators have collected secret documents that may provide evidence of war crimes by Bashar al-Assad and his regime.

From the documents they’ve collected, “the Commission for International Justice and Accountability has been able to construct a detailed picture of the Assad regime’s wartime structure, and the direct involvement of senior officials in the commission of atrocities,” The Guardian’s Julian Borger writes. The CIJA is an “independent organization set up by humanitarian law experts, with funding from western governments, with the goal of collecting evidence of atrocities committed by the Syrian regime and opposition, in preparation for the day when they can be judged by a tribunal,” Borger writes.

What’s next?

Despite the CIJA’s painstaking and dangerous work, the group is facing a hard time getting their cases in front of a court. Various Western courts appear to be focused on jihadist opposition groups — cases which would provide no arena for evidence that would implicate the Assad regime for its alleged atrocities — while Russia would likely veto any case brought before the International Criminal Court, according to Borger. Syria’s civil war is currently in its fifth year. The conflict has killed an estimated 310,000 people and has driven 7.6 million Syrians from their homes.

The Food and Drug Administration recommended easing the ban on blood donations from men who have had sex with another man.

The FDA made the recommendation in a draft guidance issued yesterday, which proposes that men who have had sex with another man would have to abstain for one year before they can donate blood. The three-decade-old ban, implemented during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, bans gay and bisexual men from donating blood outright. In recent years, the ban has been widely criticized by both medical and LGBT organizations as being outdated. It has also been condemned as a scientifically unjustifiable form of discrimination.
