We Asked Americans To React To British Things – They Pretty Much Nailed It

“It’s a fact that no one truly knows how cricket works.”

We sent 16 uncaptioned photos that sum up Britain to BuzzFeed offices in LA and New York and asked them to write down the first thing that came into their heads. Twenty-one people replied. This is what they said:

Yorkshire puddings

Yorkshire puddings

Lauren: Steaming cheesy pots!

Stacey: Bagel volcano things.

Logan: Custard-filled pastries.

Cates: The food of the gods, aka Yorkshire pudding.

Claire: Is this a breakfast food? This looks like a breakfast food. What goes in the middle of that thing? I hope it's for whipped cream. This looks like the perfect vessel for holding an American-sized amount of whipped cream.

Erin C: Those are Yorkshire puddings and they are the tits. You eat them with a Sunday roast and, if you know what's good for you, you fill 'em up with gravy before shoving them into your mouth hole.

Boris Johnson, the mayor of London

Boris Johnson, the mayor of London

Sami: Someone's sad dad.

Lauren: I LOVE THIS GUY. His name is Boris, right? Or something like that. Isn't he the mayor? Great hair.

Alexis: He has straw for hair and needs to deep condition.

Jess: This is Boris Johnson! I remember when he got stuck on that zip line.

Mike: He looks like the lead in a Lifetime movie on the life of Gary Busey.

Keely: Wow, a member of the Malfoy family boxing!

Cates: This is the whitest man to ever live. No wonder he got elected.

Sarah: Marketing ploy to get children to drink alcohol.

Sami: Vodka that tastes like a Jolly Rancher candy.

Alexis: In America, we use this to clean windows. IDK what you do with it, but it's probably something WEIRD.

Jess: This is DEFINITELY the first thing you get drunk on when you're a ~cool British teen~.

Kevin: Hmmm, a few of these and I might do some things that I don't normally do.

Orioles Employees To Be Paid For Week Of Missed Work During Baltimore Unrest

The organization informed employees Tuesday that they will receive full pay for the week of games rescheduled or moved due to the riots.

Orioles employees were informed Tuesday that they will be compensated for the week of games that were rescheduled and relocated due to riots in late April.

In a letter obtained by BuzzFeed News that was posted next to an employee time clock, the Orioles called the circumstances "extraordinary."

Beneath the Orioles logo, the notice said:

Due to the extraordinary circumstances that led to several cancelled or rescheduled games, the Orioles organization will compensate all hourly employees for hours that would have been ordinarily worked the week of April 27. This adjustment will be added [sic] will be added to your 5/29 paycheck.

Another Camden Yards employee who works for Delaware North, which manages concessions for the team, told BuzzFeed News the employee union will pay $200 for the time lost.

The Orioles confirmed Wednesday that employees will be "reimbursing hourly Orioles employees who lost wages during that week."

In late April, as authorities clashed with crowds protesting the police-related death of Freddie Gray, the Orioles postponed two games against the White Sox and played the final game of the series without an audience present. Another homestand was scheduled for that week, but it was moved to Tampa Bay, where the Orioles acted as the home team.

The team collected no door revenue for the empty White Sox game, and though they were the home team in Tampa (and therefore collected door revenue), the disparity between Orioles attendance and Rays attendance is significant. In 2014, the Orioles averaged a home attendance of more than 30,000 fans. The Rays averaged just under 18,000 for home games. The attendance figure for each of the three relocated Rays-Orioles games is in the 11,000 range.

In April, Stacey Dash, a server at Dempsey's Brew Pub at Camden Yards, told BuzzFeed News that although the potential for lost income would be a tough hit financially for her, she appreciated the concern for the safety of employees.

Dash said she averages between $150 and $300 in salary, plus tips. Dempsey's is also operated by Delaware North, so Dash will receive $200 for the week, which she said is "better than nothing."

During the unexpected week off, Dash said she intended to "support the local bars and businesses that are affected by the curfew" with her coworkers.

The Orioles, despite taking a hit, never presented the financial repercussions of their organization as important in context of what was going on in the immediate surrounding area of their stadium.

John Angelos, an executive vice president and son of the team owner, issued a lengthy statement that focused heavily on the loss of jobs, opportunities, and civil rights protections in Baltimore.

"We need to keep in mind people are suffering and dying around the U.S.," Angelos said. "While we are thankful no one was injured at Camden Yards, there is a far bigger picture for poor Americans in Baltimore and everywhere who don't have jobs and are losing economic civil and legal rights, and this makes inconvenience at a ball game irrelevant in light of the needless suffering government is inflicting upon ordinary Americans."

After the empty stadium White Sox game, Orioles manager Buck Showalter spoke candidly about how he approaches discussions involving race.

"You hear people try to weigh in on things that they really don't know anything about," Showalter said. "I've never been black, OK? So I don't know. I can't put myself there. I've never faced the challenged they face, so I understand the emotion."

Where In The U.S. Is It Cheaper To Rent Than Buy?

A new report shows the cities where buying a home makes the most sense, and the cities where it doesn’t.

Joe Raedle / Getty Images

Is it still worth it to buy a house, or are you better off renting? After a housing bubble, a housing crash, a financial crisis, and a Great Recession, plenty of people have turned away from the American dream, helped along by impossibly high prices in some big cities, stagnant wages in others, and mortgages that remain tough to get.

But across most of the country, buying is still a much better deal than renting, according to a new study by real estate site Trulia. In all 100 of the country's biggest metro areas, owning comes out cheaper than renting — 35% cheaper, on average.

To calculate the advantage of buying over renting (and vice versa), Ralph McLaughlin, Trulia's housing economist, assumed buyers would make a 20% down payment on their home and take out a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage at 3.87%. Alongside mortgage payments, he factored in things like maintenance, insurance, and taxes; one-off costs were also considered — closing costs for owners, security deposits for renters, and so on (you can see the detailed methodology here).

Once all that, and more, is strung together, the report tried to answer a simple question: Should you use all that money to buy a house, or just invest it somewhere else and rent a place instead?

In some cities, buying looks like a no-brainer:

The Viral Story Of How A 20-Year-Old Indian From A Red Light Area Became A Sex Educator

Shweta Katti is not your average bright full-scholarship student. Her story is dark but incredibly inspiring.

Yesterday, Humans of Bombay posted a photo of 20-year-old Shweta Katti. The photo was accompanied by her first-person account about growing up in a "red light area" and how she journeyed out of it, all the way to college in the United States.

facebook.com

Like so many others, we were obviously moved by her story and very curious, so we talked to the founder of Humans of Bombay, Karishma Mehta, who interviewed Shweta.

View Video ›

Karishma Mehta told BuzzFeed over a phone call that Shweta, who was previously insecure because of her dark skin, now exudes confidence. "She's fought her insecurities. She's doing exceptionally at Bard, and is in fact looking forward to going to a better college."

Shweta told Karishma that she regained her lost self esteem after travelling throughout India conducting sex ed workshops, where she realised she didn't feel judged for the way she looked or for her background. "I don't know why you have to be fair to be beautiful...and because I'm dark I've always been called ugly," she told the page.

facebook.com

Karishma Mehta further said that Shweta has no preconceived notions despite growing up seeing some very scarring things in the red light area of Kamathipura.

View Video ›

"She's even witnessed men burning women there, and yet she's focused on giving back to Kamathipura and hopes to do something about the lack of libraries, cafes, and spaces for social interaction in the area," Mehta told BuzzFeed. "She believes the solution does not lie in eradicating Kamathipura but accepting it because many women have chosen to be sex workers. It is their choice." she said.

"As Indians, we need to judge less and accept things that are not always in our comfort zone, because my background is not my weakness," says Katti.

"Yes, open your mind about my home. Accept that people have choices and know that so many women there are in it by choice...because it's their source of livelihood. As Indians, we need to judge less and accept things that are not always in our comfort zone, because my background is not my weakness...I'm me, and no location can define who I am," she told Humans of Bombay.

What's Going On In The World Today?

HERE ARE THE TOP STORIES

The derailed Amtrak train that killed at least 7 people was going 106 miles per hour, twice the speed limit.

Preliminary information showed that the Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia was going 106 mph shortly before the incident, the National Transportation Safety Board said. Moments before the derailment, the engineer operating the train applied full emergency brakes, but could only reduce the speed to 102 mph before the crash. Investigators still don’t know why it was going so fast. The maximum allowed speed on the turn is 50 mph. The train lacked the latest safety technology meant to prevent high-speed derailments, according to Reuters.

The crash injured more than 200 people and killed at least seven. Here are some of the victims’ stories. Investigators are currently looking into the engineer who was operating the train and his role in the crash.

And a little extra.

“Although the cause of Tuesday’s derailment was still undetermined, the answer has a lot to do with the United States’ crumbling transportation infrastructure, and a little to do with freak accidents,” the Washington Post’s Justin Moyer writes. Tuesday’s incident is the ninth derailment this year and the nation's deadliest train accident in nearly seven years. Amtrak is currently trying to meet a deadline to install a new safety system designed to prevent collisions, which is supposed to be ready by the end of this year.

Fighting broke out after a Burundi army general claimed to have overthrown the president.

Yesterday, Major General Godefroid Niyombare said the government had dismissed President Pierre Nkurunziza of the central African nation. General Niyombare called the president’s recent decision to run for a third term unconstitutional. But it isn’t clear if the attempted coup was actually successful or who is in control of the country right now. President Nkurunziza’s office called the general’s claim “a joke.” The president was abroad in Tanzania at the time of the general’s claim, but the airport had been closed to prevent him from returning, according to The Guardian.

A bit of background.

President Nkurunziza’s decision to run for a third term in April sparked weeks of violent demonstrations. The unrest has killed at least 20 people and forced more than 50,000 Burundians to flee to neighbouring states — leaving the country facing its worst crisis since the end of its 12-year civil war in 2006. A presidential election is scheduled for June 26.

WE’RE KEEPING AN EYE ON

European Union authorities unveiled a quota system to combat the migrant crisis.

The European Union revealed a significant effort to handle the growing migrant crisis that has left more than 1,800 people dead this year. Yesterday, European officials introduced plans to spread out 20,000 refugees among the 28 member states, relative to each state's’ size and economic circumstance. However, as many as one million refugees could reach Europe from Libya, a number far greater than what the EU is planning to accomodate. “The issue of how to stop the flow of refugees and absorb those who make it to Italy or other southern nations has emerged as one of the most challenging facing the European Union,” James Kanter writes in the New York Times.

What’s next?

Many countries in the EU have opposed the commission’s refugee distribution plan, highlighting the political complexity of the region that is grappling with rising anti-immigration sentiments. Some countries indicated their opposition to the plan even before it was announced. The plan was designed to primarily help Greece, Italy, and Malta, which are the main destinations for many migrants fleeing their war-torn homes. European leaders are expected to decide on the plan in June.

A Verizon security flaw left millions of home internet users vulnerable to attack.

A loophole in Verizon’s home internet service left the personal information of its 9 million customers vulnerable to outsiders who could gain access to it simply by visiting the Verizon website with a spoofed IP address. The information could then be used to obtain password resets and gain full control over those home accounts. BuzzFeed News learned of the security loophole last week and informed Verizon after verifying the flaw. Verizon has since fixed the problem.

What Baltimore’s young people have to say about the word “thug.”

In a powerful essay, a Baltimore high school teacher reflects on the way the city’s young people grappled with the media glare during the protests following the death of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old black man who sustained a fatal injury in police custody. “…Where the media sees uneducated thugs taking advantage of a terrible situation, I see that we have not done our duty by our children and they are no longer taking that failure lightly,” she writes.

BBC Radio Sheffield

Winnie is a widow and had no children – the only regular contact she has is with her carers.

Sue Pinder, who runs the care agency that provides the carers who look after Winnie, contacted BBC Sheffield to ask if the 99-year-old could have a tour of the studios.

Instead, the station turned up and spoke to her about what she was doing for her birthday. She said:

I don't know yet. I get well looked after, with all these carers who come and look after me, they've got to know me, they come fussing. I've been happy enough.

It's a big achievement [getting to 100]. You know, if you've no family and someone's good enough to come and be around [and look after] you like that, I've had nothing to grumble about really.

The radio station put Winnie's story on its Facebook page on Tuesday, where the the post has now been shared more than 40,000 times and been viewed an estimated 2.5 million times, the station said.

So far Winnie has been offered a chauffeur-driven limousine for the day and for a cabaret act to come and perform for her. One company offered to send a vintage china teacup and saucer set and cards have been sent from across the UK and even from Australia and the US.

A pizza company has said it would provide food for the celebration and Jameson's Cafe & Tea Rooms has offered to make a birthday cake.

Serenta Homecare has been posting birthday wishes on its Facebook page.
