In case you’re looking for a healthy and tasty alternative to that sad desk salad.

Jenny Chang / BuzzFeed

When you eat the right kind of food at lunch, it'll help you stay full and alert throughout the afternoon. You won't be as tempted to snack, and you'll feel more energized. But healthy lunch can sometimes be a little hard to plan for and figure out.

So we turned to some healthy people to see what they like to eat for lunch. Some of these folks are nutrition experts with advanced degrees and strings of letters after their names. Others are personal trainers, fitness coaches, and healthy food bloggers. Regardless, these are people who think a ton about healthy eating and how to choose food that makes you feel good.

Here's what they shared. Some good ideas in here you might want to try yourself.

Stuffed Ranchero Sweet Potato

"This recipe is perfect to pack up when you're on the go! One sweet potato provides over 300% of your daily vitamin A needs, and comes packed with other sassy nutrients." (Get the recipe here.)

Vegetable Grits

"I recently moved from the West Coast to the South and have totally fallen in love with grits. But in true California fashion, I add a bunch of vegetables to them -- in this case a bunch of collard greens or kale, blitzed in the food processor. They are super-green, creamy and make the perfect one-bowl lunch with a couple poached eggs on top." (You can find the recipe here.)

Tawny Willoughby, a 27-year-old from Alabama, shared a picture on Facebook showing what skin cancer treatment can potentially look like. The picture has since been shared by nearly 50,000 people. WARNING: Some may find the image disturbing.

Tawny Willoughby

Back in April, Willoughby was undergoing a round of skin cancer treatment and shared this selfie on Facebook to warn people about the dangers of tanning beds.

Willoughby writes that she has received numerous treatments for her multiple cancers: a cream called Aldara (imiquimod) is what caused the scabbing in her picture; she's also had curettage and electrodessication; cryosurgery; surgical excision; and photodynamic therapy.

She writes: "If anyone needs a little motivation to not lay in the tanning bed and sun here ya go! This is what skin cancer treatment can look like."

She writes: "If anyone needs a little motivation to not lay in the tanning bed and sun here ya go! This is what skin cancer treatment can look like."

Willoughby says that she used to do indoor tanning a lot in high school: "I probably laid an average of 4-5 times a week," she says. As the mother of a 2-year-old, she writes that the issue of tanning is even more serious to her now: "Don't let tanning prevent you from seeing your children grow up. That's my biggest fear now that I have a two year old little boy of my own."

The World Health Organization recently added ultraviolet (UV) radiation-emitting tanning devices, like tanning beds and lamps, to the list of the most dangerous forms of cancer-causing radiation. People who use tanning beds under the age of 30 increase their risk of melanoma by 75%. They're also 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma (other forms of skin cancer). Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, but the other cancers can kill also.

U.S. Airlines Are Like A "Low-Cost Bus Company," Says Emirates Chief

More shots fired in the fight over “open skies” and the rise of the aviation giants of the Persian Gulf.

Tony Avelar / AP Images for Emirates

Let's get ready to rumble. Emirates airline president Tim Clark spoke with The National about the big three U.S. airlines that are calling for restrictions on Persian Gulf–based carriers offering international flights to U.S. customers:

"What they should focus on is the appalling state of the US domestic market. It's happened because the big three were allowed to absorb the rest of the industry...

"And they were blind to standards in their own market as well. Have you been on a US domestic flight? It's like travelling with a low-cost bus company. The terminals are full of frightened people sitting on the floors because they've no facilities, being shouted at by airline agents and cabin crew who are stressed themselves because of the working conditions.

"No wonder that the three airlines accusing us figure regularly in the list of the most-hated companies in America."

Via giphy.com

Those are some fighting words, but they don't come out of the blue. For years now, U.S. and European airlines have complained that the market for international flights has been unfairly conquered by the likes of Emirates, Dubai's state-owned carrier.

Emirates is now the world's largest international airline, although just 15 years ago, it was ranked No. 24). Along with Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airlines, it has shaken up global aviation, particularly in the fast-growing market for flights to and from Asia.

U.S. and European airlines have claimed the Gulf carriers, which are all owned by their governments, get unfair subsidies, access to cheap fuel, and a free ride on labor, human rights, and other standards that draw close scrutiny in the West. In March, a group of U.S. unions wrote an open letter criticizing routine discrimination against women and the LGBT community by the Persian Gulf airlines and their government owners.

In February, the CEOs of American Airlines, United, and Delta said in a joint interview with the Wall Street Journal that the three Gulf airlines have received more than $42 billion in subsidies since 2004. They "are not normal airlines," United CEO Jeff Smisek said in the interview. "They're arms of the state."

When Stephen Odom started smoking pot as a teenager, he saw it as a great way to calm his anxiety and have fun in high school. But his drug use evolved into reckless self-medicating. "It started out as a fun party surrounded by people, but eventually turned much darker," he writes on his blog. "I was constantly seeking to push the envelope. Constantly trying to not feel anything. Trying to numb that internal malady." Odom lost control of his drug use, barely passing high school and getting his first DWI in his senior year.

By the time he was 22, Odom was drinking heavily — a gallon of whiskey every couple of days — taking tons of pills, and huffing nitrous oxide. He'd gotten two DWIs. His therapist presented him with a choice: go to rehab or she'd stop seeing him. Her ultimatum worked. Odom checked himself into an inpatient rehab program. After fighting his way first through intense withdrawal and then through a few relapses, he got clean and sober for good in August 2009.

21 Things You Never Knew About Your Period

$

Let’s talk about that thing where you bleed from your vagina every month.

Considering all the time you spend with your period, it's still pretty damn mysterious. So to find out more, we spoke with two expert OB-GYNs: Dr. Lauren Streicher, associate clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University's medical school, and author of Love Sex Again; and Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at Yale School of Medicine. Now, let's get down to it:

Jenny Chang / BuzzFeed

Here's what actually happens during your period:

Essentially, your whole menstrual cycle is designed to get you pregnant, says Streicher. When ovulation occurs in the middle of your cycle, an egg is released from the ovaries and moves to the fallopian tubes, where it could meet with sperm and get fertilized. Meanwhile, your body revs up production of the hormone progesterone, which thickens the lining of the uterus so that it'll be ready for a fertilized egg to implant. But if no pregnancy occurs this month, those progesterone levels drop and that thickened uterine lining sloughs off. That's your period!

instagram.com

But if you're taking hormonal birth control, you're basically getting a fake period.

But if you're taking hormonal birth control, you're basically getting a fake period.

If you're using something like the pill, the ring, the IUD, or the implant, your period is a little different. Those hormones basically tell your body that it doesn't need to produce more progesterone, says Minkin. Without that added progesterone, you don't build up much of a lining each month, so your period tends to be a lot lighter. In most cases, you're also not ovulating each month, though you can still ovulate with the hormonal IUD.

It is totally fine and healthy to get no period at all while on birth control.

Like we said, it's basically an impostor period, so if you have little to no bleeding while using the pill/ring/implant/IUD, that's completely fine, says Minkin. Don't ask questions, just go with it.
