Simon Pegg Thinks There Needs To Be Stronger Roles For Women In Movies

Pegg spoke to BuzzFeed News about female-led films, and how romantic comedies are not just for women.

Lynzy Billing / BuzzFeed

Are there enough well-crafted, strong roles for women in films, and are films with women at the centre "niche"? These are some of the questions Hollywood's key players have addressed – rather tiresomely – over the years. Last year in her Oscars acceptance speech, Cate Blanchett made it clear that there needs to be more films with women at the centre of the storyline. "Audiences want to see them, and in fact, they earn money," she said. "The world is round, people."

But in an industry that's starting to address problem areas such as the gender pay-gap and the discrimination female stars regularly face, it's welcoming to see that it's not only women speaking out. Star of the cult favourites Spaced and the "Cornetto" trilogy, as well as Hollywood favourites Mission Impossible and Star Trek, Simon Pegg has now also voiced his concern that not enough is being done to reflect real women in movies.

Speaking to BuzzFeed News, Pegg said that although the film industry is recognising the lack of well-written female characters, the problem is not being addressed fast enough. "I personally don't feel there are enough female voices in film," Pegg said. "I hope that the recognition of the lack of well-written female characters will be followed by change."

Pegg said that one of the problems was that film genres are often split into gendered categories. He singled out romantic comedies as being a genre that is often misunderstood by many as being "for women", and that people should go and see films written by women, not to avoid them because they think they're films "for girls".

"Romantic comedies are about the dynamic between men and women – or men and men or women and women, depending on what the movies about. To say 'oh I don't want to go and see that because it's a girls film' is shutting yourself off from some big laughs," the British star said.

“After my diagnosis, I wanted people to see me raw, without hair, going through this process," she said. "It wasn’t until last year that I could finally put on a wig and embrace the chameleon in me again.”

Lekae, who comes from three generations of hairdressers, even chose to attend the 2013 Grammys with a bald head.

“I wanted that girl who was afraid to be her authentic self to say, ‘If she can walk the red carpet with her bald head, then I can try to embrace who I am right now.’

Vaping Weed: Risks And Rewards

$
0

With the stigma of pot on the decline, people are increasingly turning to vaping to get high. Here’s what you should know before you inhale.

Photo / Macey Foronda, Graphic / Chris Ritter for BuzzFeed.

Over the past decade, as cigarette smokers have switched by the thousands to vaporizers, potheads, too, have discovered vaping as a healthier and less smelly way of getting high.

Whoopi Goldberg, for example, has a vape named Sippy, which she uses to treat her glaucoma. "The vape pen has changed my life," Goldberg wrote at The Cannabist. "With each sip comes relief — from pressure, pain, stress, discomfort."

Vaporizers range from cheap bodega models with glass, metal, or plastic cartridges full of hash oil to futuristic pods with smartphone apps that retail for hundreds of dollars. Crowdfunding campaigns for newer, better vapes pop up every few months. (BuzzFeed's drugs reporter Amanda Chicago Lewis reviewed 15 vapes in 15 hours, if you're looking for recommendations.)

"Getting a new vape is almost as good as getting a new smartphone," Isaiah, a 24-year-old from Brooklyn, told BuzzFeed News. Vaping is "cleaner, cooler, more modern, healthier, more economical, tastes better, easier to handle, and I never need matches or a lighter."

Many people vape weed because of the assumed health benefits. Take Larry, a 26-year-old start-up founder in Atlanta. He isn't a regular pot smoker, but when he does he prefers vaping. "If I'm going to partake I might as well do so in a manner that doesn't increase cancer," he told BuzzFeed News.

But how safe is it, really? Here's what medical experts say.

allforeverybody.tumblr.com / Via Tumblr

This is a big deal, since the biggest risk of smoking weed is the smoke itself, which contains the same kind of cancer-causing chemicals as cigarette smoke.

Smoking is associated with bronchitis and emphysema, as well as the inhalation of carcinogens, according to Marilyn Huestis, chief of chemistry and drug metabolism at the National Institute on Drug Abuse, who has studied the physiological effects of vaping marijuana. "People who vaporize report decreased respiratory symptoms" compared to those who smoke weed, she told BuzzFeed News in an email.

Studies have shown that cannabis users regularly report breathing easier after switching to vapes. And the vapor itself is a lot cleaner than smoke from a joint.

Or a bicycle lane would be nice. Or maybe a place to safely turn off if a car craps out. The Golden Gate Bridge costs maybe $10 to cross. I thought that was high until I saw this. I feel it for the P.E.I. natives who can't even leave their island without being taken to the cleaners. No wonder tourism in P.E.I. is slumping. Nobody likes to be ripped off like this."
