What Happened To Urban Outfitters' Splashy New Fitness Brand Without Walls?

The Instagram account for Urban Outfitters’ new Without Walls brand is gone, along with its blog and dedicated website.

Last year, Urban Outfitters splashily launched a new fitness and outdoors brand called Without Walls, selling items like $88 performance onesies, $68 jogger pants and $699 tents under its own label and from brands like Patagonia and The North Face.

Today, barely a trace of Without Walls can be found.

Its dedicated website and blog are gone, and its Instagram account is no longer available, BuzzFeed News noticed. Its Twitter account has been inactive since March, and URLs for Without Walls' blog posts and website reroute to the Urban homepage.

The nascent brand appears to have been folded into Urban Outfitters' own website, and is presently down to a single page of mostly discounted products.

The retailer has added a dedicated Without Walls FAQ to its site that says Without Walls credit and merchandise can be used at UrbanOutfitters.com and that the label will still be sold online and in stores, suggesting it will continue in a watered down form. Urban Outfitters, which also owns Free People and Anthropologie, declined to comment on the deletions.

Without Walls garnered plenty of attention after launching in March 2014. A snapshot of its Instagram page from April through Wayback Machine shows it had more than 70,000 followers.

"Without Walls was launched with significant hype and there was talk at the time of this potentially becoming a stand alone concept," said Liz Dunn, CEO of retail consulting firm Talmage Advisors. "I thought the assortment was solid but it doesn't surprise me that their customer might not have been looking for that product from them."

The Personal Assistant That Will Help Facebook Eat The Internet

Alex Kantrowitz / BuzzFeed News / Via buzzfeed.com

In late March, Facebook gave the world a peek at its grand ambition: to use the Messenger platform to effectively become the internet. Yesterday evening, thanks to a test rollout of the company's virtual personal assistant program, M, some of us were treated to a glimpse of how that process is likely going to go down.

Late last night, M popped up in my co-worker's Messenger app, and, within moments, started behaving exactly like, well, a real human being.

It worked seamlessly, drawing information from other platforms like Yelp. It booked flights (M seems really good at helping you spend your money), explained how to use Snapchat, and recognized articles my colleague had written. It was a little stiff, perhaps, but an effective researcher and a reasonable conversation partner. As my colleague’s screengrabs spread around the internet, watching people tweet about it began to feel almost surreal — a bit Skynet-y. One Twitter user said that M helped him lower his Comcast bill.

As Wired reported back in August, M is the product of humans and AI working together. M is both supervised and supported by real people, meaning no, an algorithm didn’t call Comcast to haggle the bill — a human did. Or maybe it didn’t! Likely for this reason, out of the gate, M’s use cases feel less gimmicky than those of Siri or Google Now or Cortana, and more like something you’d do if you had a real human concierge at your beck and call. And, if you’re Facebook, it’s the perfect carrot to lure hundreds of millions of people into Messenger’s all-encompassing operating system — and keep them there.

The Messenger ecosystem that Facebook unveiled in March was an attempt to take over your apps from the inside out, by turning itself into a platform developers could build into. If fully realized by Facebook, it wouldn’t just look like the internet — it would be the internet.

But the internet is enormous and difficult to navigate. That, and we’re lazy. One way around this is to build a bunch of apps, which was a core premise of the F8 announcement. But even when broken into apps, discovery and user attention can pose a problem. And so now mobile ecosystem builders like Apple and Google are experimenting with different, newer ways to unbundle content within apps beyond notifications. There’s Google Now on Tap, which tries to index your phone like a big Google search, and there’s Apple’s "peek and pop" touch interface, which only exists for those with an iPhone 6s, but which very well might change how we conceive of the diminishing role of apps on our home screens.

If Facebook’s F8 plan was to move all your browsing, organizing, scheduling, commerce (it doesn’t feel like a coincidence that Messenger is also a payments system), and customer service under its own roof, it only makes sense that it would find a way to make these features so simple that you don’t even have to do anything. Terminator anxieties aside, our first glimpses of M show off a personal assistant that’s the product of serious R&D, and oodles of Facebook-collected user data — and that is ridiculously, almost incomprehensibly, useful.

And so Facebook’s M looks, at first glance to be a formidable contender, here in the Unbundling Wars. Apple and Google, try as they may, don’t occupy the same space as Facebook does for well over a billion people. Apple and Google are great at hardware and software, but for most people, their services don’t resemble the totality of the internet experience the way Facebook does. Apple and Google are allegiances and choices. Facebook just is. Through that lens, then, M is a most powerful guide, able to make sense of not only the ecosystem of your smartphone, but the greater world around you. Add real, live, assisting humans to that mix and you’ve got something so useful it’s scary.

Uber Wants To Be The Courier Service For Small Local Businesses

$

0

Brick-and-mortar businesses that couldn’t otherwise front the cost of an in-house delivery service now have the option of outsourcing it to Uber or Postmates, among other players.

Uber / Via youtube.com

Uber wants to be the on-demand logistics company of your — but more importantly, Travis Kalanick's — dreams. After more than a yearlong pilot of a consumer-facing delivery service in New York, Uber is making a move into on-demand logistics with the launch of a refurbished and business-focused UberRush courier service in New York, San Francisco, and Chicago. Simply put: The company is no longer experimenting with logistics — it's finally attempting to fulfill what many, including Kalanick himself, have prophesied to be Uber's destiny.

While individual customers in New York can use UberRush in the app to deliver something from one place to another, the more lucrative opportunity for Uber — and what the company is hoping will be its next viable revenue stream — is in offering its logistics infrastructure of drivers and bike messengers to brick-and-mortar businesses. To tailor its service to the needs of small businesses, Uber built a separate platform that allows a restaurant or retailer to hail couriers as orders come in.

To test out the service, we ordered a single juice from Indie Fresh, a participating retailer, by filling out an online form. There was no indication that it was affiliated with UberRush; we simply selected the juice we wanted, indicated the shipping, billing address, and payment information, and in less than 30 minutes a bike messenger was at our door with that single juice. Indie Fresh filled the order as it came in, as it would with any other order.

Businesses that use UberRush — such as Blockheads or Indie Fresh in New York — pay an initial flat rate for the first mile and a lower rate for every mile after that (in New York, for example, it's $5.50 for the first mile and $2.50 for every additional mile). It's tough to say whether the economics works in favor of small businesses that don't have a delivery minimum or fee.

The Indie Fresh juice, for instance, was delivered from the store's Hell's Kitchen location to our office in the Flatiron, which according to Google Maps is approximately two miles. That means the cost of delivery was about $8. The juice itself was a total of $10.89 including taxes, and we weren't charged a delivery fee. That means Indie Fresh earned less than $2.89 on that sale, and the rest went to Uber.

Uber

An in-house delivery alternative, however, may not be any better. Typically drivers are paid hourly and are often benefited employees — the costs of which a small business would have to front. Moreover, the scale UberRush (or Postmates, for that matter) offers can't be matched by two or three in-house delivery drivers.

On the driver side, Uber is guaranteeing $18 an hour at launch in San Francisco. (Postmates guarantees its drivers $25 an hour.) The pay model works exactly like UberX — in New York, Uber takes 20% commission; in San Francisco and Chicago, it takes 25%. The background checks and on-boarding experience are exactly like UberX as well. UberRush is also a commercial service, so if you're required to have commercial insurance to drive for UberX in your market you'll also need commercial insurance to deliver for UberRush.

It's an obvious and expected move for Uber — Kalanick has long prophesied the day that Uber would be delivering things as seamlessly as it delivered people. Why? Much like its transportation service, this delivery service makes good business sense — there's substantial potential revenue with low overhead. And, perhaps more important, simply because Uber can.

The company has built a technological infrastructure that is capable of supporting delivery of basically anything that can be delivered on demand — all without actually employing couriers or striking formal partnerships with businesses. As Shom Chowdhury, CEO of Indie Fresh, said in the UberRush promo video, "UberRush is a very smart solution because without partnering with Uber, I partnered with them. Uber actually moves with me."

She told BuzzFeed News that she had a long and difficult road to motherhood, and along the way had a total of nine miscarriages. One of those miscarriages occurred nine years ago, when she was four months pregnant.

"Although it was a long nine years ago I feel that lump in my throat and ache in my heart every time I think about it," she wrote on Facebook.
