For the uninitiated, jinn are creatures made of "smokeless fire" that are mentioned in the Qur'an and throughout Islamic mythology. The two most famous jinns are probably the Muslim Devil (Shaytan) and the jinn in Aladdin's lamp from One Thousand and One Nights.

The jinn in the lamp was of course, immortalized by Robin William's portrayal of Genie in the Disney movie, though not totally accurately.

Halloween is a magical time for pun-lovers, but one woman just showed us all how it's done with this incredible "Amazon Prime" costume.

Caron Arnold, an art director at a marketing agency in St. Louis, made it for her office costume contest.

"I had this idea a couple of years ago, and I've thought about making it for a while," she told BuzzFeed News.

Obviously, she won.

Arnold shared the costume on Reddit, where she said it took "about 10 hours and lots of hot glue" to make.

"We usually have a few Amazon Prime boxes in our recycle bin, so I started saving them and asked coworkers to bring me their boxes over the past week," she said.

After gathering all the boxes, Arnold said building the costume was "like a puzzle."

She also gave "major props" to the creator of this Optimus Prime costume tutorial, which she said she drew inspiration from.

Here's How To Eat Packaged Foods And Still Be Healthy

$

0

Yes, delicious snacks are part of the deal.

It would be great if every snack and meal we ate was a healthful balance of whole foods we cooked at home. But also, it wouldn't, because packaged and processed foods are delicious, and also sometimes convenience trumps all.

So, to find out how to still eat your favorite stuff while maintaining a healthy, balanced diet, we reached out to registered dietitians Jessica Jones, of Food Heaven Made Easy and co-author of 28-Day Plant-Powered Health Reboot, and Brian St. Pierre, director of performance nutrition at Precision Nutrition.

Here's what they told us:

First of all, you can totally still eat packaged food and be ~healthy~.

First of all, you can totally still eat packaged food and be ~healthy~.

There are plenty of processed foods that dietitians would consider part of a healthy diet, says Jones. The trick is to gravitate towards the minimally processed options, because as a food gets more processed, it has less nutrition, more calories, and typically way more sugar and/or salt.

Ultra-processed foods (like cookies, candy, doughnuts, soda, and chips) give you lots of calories, little nutrition, and limited satiety, says St. Pierre. They also stimulate the hell out of your brain's pleasure centers which throws off your internal hunger cues (which is one reason you can eat half a pan of brownies without noticing you're getting kinda full) and causes you to keep seeking out foods that make your brain feel so good, says St. Pierre.

Instagram: @brianhernandez05 / Via instagram.com

So you want to look for products with fewer ingredients...that you actually understand.

So you want to look for products with fewer ingredients...that you actually understand.

Generally speaking, says Jones, the fewer ingredients an item has, the less processed it is. And while ingredients you don't recognize or can't pronounce aren't necessarily harmful, per se, says St. Pierre, erring on the side of foods that contain mostly stuff you can identify and recognize will guide you towards healthier options.

So, for example, peanut butter that's just peanuts and maybe a bit of salt would be a healthier choice than peanut butter that has sugar and oils added. A fruit and nut bar containing only nuts and fruit only would be better than a bar with a bit of fruit plus fruit flavorings, sugar, and so on.

Via instagram.com

And pay attention to serving sizes, because sometimes they are HILARIOUS.

And pay attention to serving sizes, because sometimes they are HILARIOUS.

What's considered a single serving on a nutrition label is not always what a reasonable human person would eat in one sitting.

Some examples: A serving of bread is often a single slice (wtf). One serving of Pringles is 15 chips (lol). One serving of Pop-Tarts is a single Pop-Tart (no). Basically, make sure that you're looking at the nutrition info for the amount you actually eat.

Premiere: Tove Lo's #FreeTheNipple Inspired "Lady Wood" Album Art

Taylor Miller / BuzzFeed

Tove Lo’s new album Lady Wood drops today, and if you take a look at the album artwork you’ll realize one thing: Tove is a big fan of the #FreeTheNipple movement. Since it's an incredibly important issue to her, she wanted to use her album art as a way to express that. Read on to see a first look at the photos inside her album and the inspiration behind it all. Oh, and if you don't want to see big photos of nipples, I'd suggest you stop reading here.

What does the #FreeTheNipple movement mean to you?

Tove Lo: It's a very straight forward way to protest the fact that women still aren't allowed full control over their bodies. Not in the same way as men, and that to me is wrong.

What message were you looking to send through your album art?

TL: I wanted it to be cocky (hah). And it feels fucking perfect with the album title Lady Wood!

Island Records

What was your inspiration behind the album artwork?

TL: It wasn't planned really at first, it was part of the "details shots" we did at the photo shoot. When I saw it it made me think of the rolling stones Sticky Fingers cover and Madonna's Like A Virgin. I already had the album title and felt like it was time for another badass crotch photo.

How do you think the artwork relates to the music and your life right now?

TL: For me, music and sex have always been very connected—which (EVEN AS A WOMAN) I have no problem being honest about, which I think this art shows. The whole album is about chasing rushes, doing things that scare you and turn you on at the same time. Whether it's in love, drugs, running a red light, or for me, music and being on stage. This life is an endless rush. It's amazing, but the lows hit hard.

Island Records

What would you say to people who are anti-free the nipple?

TL: Try and see the bigger picture. Do you think we should accept that women don't have the same rights as men regarding what to show or not show of their bodies?

With social platforms censoring female nipples, how do you think sexism contributes to the movement?

TL: All these platforms are suppose to be new, free spaces for individuals to express themselves however they want to, and the [fact that the] world still follows such old school values is surprising to me. I remember reading an article about this girl who posted funny videos on YouTube of herself farting and it got taken down. I then searched "girls farting" and had to login to prove I was over 18. I then logged out and searched for "boys farting" and tons of videos came up. It might sound like a silly thing but it's not. It just proves how the female body is always looked at as an object and that all female nudity is meant to be sexual when it's just natural.

Island Records

What's the most exciting part about releasing this new album and album art, and having the chance to say what you want through your music?

TL: I've never compromised with my music and it's the most amazing feeling to be able to express myself exactly the way I want to. Certain media might censor, but the real shit is out there and my fans will find it :).

If you could come up with a new hashtag in support of freeing the nipple, what would it be?

TL: #LetEmBreathe

Tove Lo's new album Lady Wood is out today.

Jennifer Briskin has always been close with her grandfather Stanley, so for her Oct. 1 wedding to Austin Tansantisuk, she included him in a special way: she had him serve as her flower girl.

"I always knew that I wanted him to play a special part in my wedding," Briskin told BuzzFeed. "I walk around a nearby park with him every Sunday where we enjoy talking about the stock market, his days as a popular DJ in Savannah, and Fitbit. We have a Fitbit step competition every week which he is very enthusiastic about!"

"He was worried that he wasn’t up for the task, but I assured him that if two-year-olds can do it, he could figure it out," Briskin said. "He insisted on practicing before the big day so my sister Allison, my maid of honor, bought a pumpkin bucket and fake leaves from the dollar store and they practiced on his driveway."

The "Doctor Strange" Cast Describe Their Ideal Superhero Alter-Egos And It’s Perfect

$

0

Marvel fans and Benedict Cumberbatch fans are in for a big treat – Doctor Strange has finally hit cinemas. So when some of the main cast came through London this week to promote the film, we decided to get the lowdown on what their ideal superhero alter-egos would be. Here's everything from their costumes to their sidekicks and their superhero BFFs...

Yakovliev / Getty Images

What would your superpower be?

Benedict Cumberbatch: I’d be a doctor. Like, a real doctor that works in the NHS, that’s who I’d be. Like, the real heroes, doctors and nurses. I think anyone who works in medicine has superpowers; anyone who works in the NHS has superpowers. It’s a miracle, it is magic. It wouldn’t happen if [doctors and nurses] didn’t go to work and give everything they’ve got for very little. They do crazy hours and keep an ideal afloat through the love and care that they have for their craft and their patients and the institution of the NHS. We should be very proud of it. Really, honestly. And I did meet a few people, obviously some to do with the higher echelons of brain surgery, but I’m lucky enough to know a few in my personal life – and hats off, or doctor’s things off, and respect to them.

What would your costume be like?

BC: It would be white or green or blue. Yeah, it's a very standard outfit, I think.

If you had a slogan what would it be?

BC: "The NHS rules" or something like that!

Sian Butcher/BuzzFeed

If you could be that superhero for just one week what would you do?

BC: I would probably go to Great Ormond Street hospital [in London]. I've visited patients there. To be able to actually help them would give me a great joy. Those are the most extraordinarily heroic children and they wear their burdens so lightly; they're just a lesson in effortless grace and it's kind of inspiring.

Would you have a sidekick?

BC: Yes, a doctor or nurse who knew what they were doing!

And gadgets?

BC: Yes, well hospitals are full of gadgets, so a stethoscope, I think, and one or two other fun bits. BuzzFeed are going to be so disappointed. They're going to be like, "Oh, you should have got him to be a marshmallow man or something!"

BuzzFeed: No! We love these answers.

BuzzFeed

What superhero would be your BFF?

BC: Ooh...favouritism is a tough game to ask me to play and I'm really not happy to do it. I'd have to have this kind of little – rather like Doctor Strange has, I imagine, somewhere in the future – some kind of snow globe and they're all in there. You can just break that snow globe and they all come out.

What would your weakness be?

BC: Not being able to pick favourites!

Who would you entrust with your secret?

BC: Oh, my wife. I tell my wife all my secrets.

And if you had one city to look after, what city would it be?

BC: London! [smiles and puts his thumbs up]

BuzzFeed

Yakovliev / Getty Images

What superpower would you have?

Rachel McAdams: Selfishly I'd like to have invisibility because I've always wanted to go into other people's houses and see what they look like and just watch them interact. I guess I'm an actor – just human behaviour's just fascinating to me. I mean, I'd like to be... I really love the comic book Black Orchid by Neil Gaiman. She's kind of an environmental superhero, where she's kind of trying to bring the planet back to itself again. So I'd probably go around cleaning up the ocean and...

What would your outfit be?

RM: I was a figure skater so I wore a lot of spandex in my life, so I'd probably avoid that. What would I wear?! I wouldn't mind a cape, actually. I think they're kind of cool. Benedict made the cape cool again. [corrects herself] The cloak, the cloak. I have to respect the cloak.

BuzzFeed

Any particular colours?

RM: I really like pink.

Sian Butcher/BuzzFeed

If you had to protect one city, which would it be?

RM: [looks shocked] One city?! Oh I don't know, all my friends and family are scattered around. Can I save them all?!

What would your weakness be?

RM: Scary movies.

Who would be your superhero BFF?

RM: The Ancient One! [from Doctor Strange]

If you could be your ultimate superhero for one week, what would you do?

RM: I would fly around a lot. I would fly around the world.

Yakovliev / Getty Images

What would your superpower be?

Benedict Wong: My special power would be... I think we need a lot of peace in this world now. To restore peace in our times. So the power of understanding so that we all realise we're one race.

BuzzFeed

How about your costume?

BW: Costumes-wise, I don't know. I think I'd hand that back to the costume designer! I'm quite happy with the costume I've got [as Wong in Doctor Strange]. I think I'll rock a cape, even though I can't fly, just to rock the cape. And maybe a stick as well, just as a nice sort of accompaniment.

Would you have a sidekick?

BW: I'd probably just get a Labrador called Spiffy. Just a dog who's a mild-mannered dog that's still a mild-mannered dog. And a ball for him...maybe to tease him a little bit.

What superhero would be your BFF?

BW: It's going to sound a little obsessed now but Spider-Man.

Sian Butcher/BuzzFeed

If you were given one week to be this superhero what would you do in that week?

BW: Just restore the peace! That's it.

Yakovliev / Getty Images

BuzzFeed

What would your superpower be?

Mads Mikkelsen: I'm very dedicated to the things I do. I'm very persistent and dedicated – if that could be your power, I'm not sure.

BuzzFeed

What would you do if you were your ultimate superhero for just one week?

MM: Do we have time to save the world? Make everybody happy? I'm not sure. Selfishly I'll go really fast from A to B and watch all the football games in the world!

What would your costume be like?

MM: You know, I'm very pleased with the costume I'm wearing in Doctor Strange. That's perfect, I'll take that one. Orange – kung fu colours.

Sian Butcher/BuzzFeed

What city would you protect if you had to protect one?

MM: This is tough stuff. You'd have to find a big city and put everyone in there, right? But right now I think we should maybe go down and protect Mosul, which is taking place, there's a big war going down there.

BuzzFeed

Would you have a sidekick?

MM: I think it would be pretty cool if my kids were super kids. Put them in there!

Who would be your superhero best mate?

MM: I guess I have to say Superman. He can do anything, right? He comes in handy.

Yakovliev / Getty Images

BuzzFeed

What would your superpower be?

Scott Derrickson: My superpower would be telepathy. And I would by necessity need to use it with discretion, not all the time. I don't want to be a mind rapist! [laughs] But I would primarily use it to place myself in important situations, try to prevent evil acts from occurring and to shift the balance of power where it needs to be shifted, that's what I would do.

What would you do if you were that superhero for one week?

BuzzFeed

SD: Hmm, that's a very good question. If I had it for only one week... Here's my honest answer, I would probably contact somebody through national security, evidence the ability I have and tell them, "Show me how you can make use of this unique ability that I have for one week." If we had one person who could perfectly read minds we could solve a lot of problems in the world in a very short period of time.

What would your costume be like?

SD: '70s punk. Yeah. Black.

Sian Butcher/BuzzFeed

Gadgets?

SD: Other than my mohawk? No. Just the mohawk. That's where the brain power comes from.

Would you have a sidekick or be a lone ranger?

SD: I would have a sidekick and it would be Mads Mikkelsen. He's the heavy.

And here are the powers he would assign the main cast, based on their behaviour on set:

Marvel Studios

Benedict Cumberbatch:

To Benedict I would give the power to make every teenage girl in the world feel uniquely loved by him. Boy, the whole world would be overwhelmed with joy.

Mads Mikkelsen:

To Mads I would give homicide impunity: He could kill anyone he wants without any concern for punishment. I think he would do well with that.

Tilda Swinton:

I would let her have a two-week vacation back from whatever celestial dimension she is visiting, because she's clearly not from this world.

Chiwetel Ejiofor:

I would give him the lead professorship at Harvard teaching history because he knows more about history than anyone who teaches there. And I'm not kidding. He is the most well-read person on human history that I've ever met.

Rachel McAdams:

I would give Rachel the power to communicate empathy and love to all the people in the world that she would want to, which would be probably everyone... That's Rachel. Rachel is all heart. She would use that power and she would use it for good.

Benedict Wong:

I'd give him the power to become a world dictator. I think the world should be run by Benedict Wong. I think we should have a one-world government and it should be a benevolent dictatorship under Benedict Wong. That's what I think. That would be a better world, don't you think?

"The View From Middletown" —The Guardian

"I remember when I first got into photography that all I wanted to do was take photos at abandoned places because it looked cool. That is not what this photo series is. David Levene explores abandoned industrial sites in the Midwest, focusing on Muncie, Indiana. The old, decrepit factories are skeletons of an industrialized past. This photo essay also includes archival photos of the factories and scenes revolving around them during their prime to truly tell this story. The industrial boom in the area took place well into the 1960s, but in the later decades it saw job losses from economic recession. The jobs never came back, and the factories are now being reclaimed by nature." —Sarah Kobos, photo editor, BuzzFeed

29 Surprising Things You Might Not Know About "The Addams Family"

$

Cher wanted to play Morticia.

Paramount / BuzzFeed

1. The makeup team had to pull Anjelica Huston’s eyes upwards with glue and string so they looked slanted.

2. As a result, she got daily headaches but couldn’t lie down to rest because she was wearing a painful metal corset to get Morticia’s tiny, tucked-in waist.

3. The shoot was plagued by misfortune – the director Barry Sonnenfeld fainted, his replacement was rushed to hospital with an infection, the production company ran out of money, and Sonnenfeld’s wife was rushed to hospital for major surgery.

4. Cher wanted to play Morticia, but producer Scott Rudin always had Anjelica Huston in mind.

5. Danny DeVito and Bob Hoskins both turned down the role of Uncle Fester.

6. Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, and David Lynch were all asked if they wanted to direct The Addams Family. They said no, so Barry Sonnenfeld became the director. He'd previously worked as director of photography for the Coen brothers.

7. John Astin, who played Gomez Addams in the 1960s TV show, actually outlived Raul Julia, who played Gomez in the film. Raul Julia died in 1994. John Astin is still alive.

8. Raul Julia was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 1991, the year The Addams Family was released. The cast were moved by the scene where Gomez is on his deathbed singing, as they thought Julia would’ve already known he was sick at that point.

9. Christopher Lloyd, who played Fester in the film (and Doc Brown in Back to the Future), shaved his head to be bald.

10. Lloyd is 6'1", so he had to crouch down throughout filming to appear much shorter. This also gave him Fester's strange wobbling walk.

11. Anjelica Huston’s makeup took at least three hours. Often the cast would need to be in the makeup chair at 4am each morning.

12. When Anjelica Huston was a little girl growing up in Ireland, her family had a book of Charles Addams' original Addams Family cartoons in the bathroom.

13. Huston used to pretend she was Morticia when she was 6 years old.

14. Jimmy Workman, who played Pugsley, was scouted for the role when he accompanied his sister on an audition for Wednesday. The casting directors saw him playing and asked him to read for the part.

15. Jimmy and Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday, had a lot of fun together on set, playing video games, skateboarding, and driving golf carts.

16. Christina Ricci channelled Winona Ryder in Beetlejuice during her audition for the role of Wednesday.

17. In the original script for the film, Uncle Fester was going to be revealed as an impostor. Christina Ricci pleaded with the filmmakers to change the storyline so that he was the real Fester with memory loss.

18. It was Christina Ricci’s birthday during filming and the cast and crew gave her a bicycle.
