Bryce Harper Begins Year With Two Mammoth Homers

Enough with your clown offseason already. Someone's ready to bust out this year.

It only took two pitches for Bryce Harper to put his stamp on Opening Day 2013. This laser to right field put the Nationals up 1-0.

The next time up, he did it again, because that's what Bryce Harper does. Ricky Nolasco was victimized both times.

Alan Cumming Guest Stars In The Season Finale Of "The Outs"

The Outs , a critically-acclaimed and crowd-funded web series about friends, lovers and exes in Brooklyn, is wrapping up with Alan Cumming guest starring in the finale episode. Adam Goldman, the show's creator, spoke to BuzzFeed via email about the finale and how The Outs got started.

How did Alan Cumming get involved with The Outs?

Adam Goldman: Alan found the show out in the wild and tweeted about being a fan. We were obviously over the moon. When you look at the work he's done, for me it's just 'Classic, classic, classic.' Romy & Michelle and Titus and X-Men 2 are three of my favorite movies. Ever. I'm not fucking around here. I was in gay nerd heaven.

It turns out, incidentally, that he is an incredibly warm human being and we got coffee and we got along swimmingly, so when he wanted to get involved it seemed like a natural fit. We didn't want it to feel like "And here is The Outs: Alan Cumming Edition!" so we found a way for him to fit into the story. I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

What was it like working with a veteran actor like Alan?

Leading up to the shoot Sasha (who plays Oona and lives with me) and I were freaking out. How do you give notes to one of your idols? But obviously this was not his first rodeo so really it was just about letting Alan and Sasha play together on set. The scene is so deliciously awkward by itself. I think he had fun playing an exaggerated, grumpier, sluttier version of himself, too. Which funnily enough is how I would describe Oona in comparison to Sasha.

How Many Waffles Can Leslie Knope Eat In A Year?

Tumblr user craponaspatula1 figures it out. Scientifically.

The Data:

The Data:

J.J.: Sure, anything for my favorite customer.
Leslie: I bet you say that to all the girls.
J.J.: Oh no, no. Actually you are my favorite. You’ve spent over a thousand dollars last year on waffles alone.

-From Season 3, Episode 2, “Flu Season”

SCIENCE:

SCIENCE:

"I checked at 3 local diners to determine average price for one belgian waffle, a la carte. Average price for a belgian waffle in San Francisco: $6.25. Ran this through a calculator that corrects for cost of living in various cities. Estimated cost for a similar waffle at a similar establishment in Indiana: $4.37.

I did not factor in price of toppings (such as whipped cream) or other accompaniments, as JJ specified this was for for waffles ALONE.

I decided that “over a thousand dollars” meant between $1,000 and $1,500.

I did not include waffles eaten elsewhere, made from home, or bought for her at JJ’s by other people (such as adorable co-workers in the hospital)."

Conclusion:

Conclusion:

"Leslie bought between 228 and 343 waffles from JJ’s last year. That’s 4 to 7 waffles per week."

Is There A Future For MTV's Troubled "Buckwild"? [Updated]

In the wake of the death of Shain Gandee, production has been suspended. Between Gandee's death and the legal problems of Salwa Amin, can the show continue?

Update - April 1, 4:12 p.m. EDT: According to an MTV spokesperson, "Production had begun on Season 2 of Buckwild but has been suspended."

Buckwild, which premiered in January, was positioned as a Jersey Shore replacement for MTV — a lighthearted, drunken romp in Appalachia instead of on the beach. But now the West Virginia-set reality show is facing the death of its breakout star, 21-year-old Shain Gandee.

Here is the network's statement:

We are shocked and saddened by the terrible news about Shain Gandee, and those involved in this tragic incident. We are waiting for more information but at this time, our main concern is for the Gandee family and their friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Shain had a magnetic personality, with a passion for life that touched everyone he met and we will miss him dearly.

Buckwild's 12-episode first season certainly didn't achieve the ratings heights of Jersey Shore, but it did decently. MTV renewed it in February before Season 1 ended; according to the network, it drew 3 million viewers in Live +3 ratings (meaning, people who watched the show within three days of its premiere).

Reality shows have faced death before and continued, illustrating its aftermath: The suicide of Russell Armstrong from Bravo's The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is the most dramatic example of that. And Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch continued to film fisherman Phil Harris after a stroke that led to his hospitalization and death: notably, the show won an Emmy for documenting the end of the popular Harris' life. Buckwild, though, is meant to be hilarious drunken antics of so-called redneck reality kids, not matters of life and death.

And Buckwild has other controversies. In MTV's quest to cast authentic West Virginian kids who like to off-road and shoot guns, Buckwild has perhaps stepped into other local problems: Cast member Salwa Amin was arrested in February during a drug raid for felony drug possession with intent to deliver. Last week, according to TMZ, she was arrested again for failing a drug test. She tested positive for oxycodone and morphine.

Even before its premiere, Sen. Joe Manchin III, a Democrat from West Virginia, criticized the show, writing to MTV, "As a U.S. Senator, I am repulsed at this business venture, where some Americans are making money off of the poor decisions of our youth." Reached today by BuzzFeed's Andrew Kaczynski, Sen. Manchin struck a different tone in this statement: "Gayle, my family and I join all West Virginians in praying for the Gandee family as they go through this difficult time."

When asked whether the show will continue, an MTV representative did not give an answer other than the statement above.

Updated at April 1, 6:07 p.m. EDT to add the Manchin statement.

How Kevin Ware's Student-Athlete Status Costs Him $40,000

$

If Kevin Ware were a regular employee, he could be entitled to thousands of dollars in worker's compensation for his injury.

University of Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware's horrific leg injury may keep him out of basketball for at least a year. If he were an employee of almost any other moneymaking enterprise in the state of Kentucky, he'd be entitled to workers' compensation for the time he didn't work. But because he's a student-athlete, he gets zero.

Workers' compensation [PDF] in Kentucky is based on the employee's average weekly wage. Ware doesn't make a wage, per se — that's another feature of being a student-athlete. But researchers at Drexel University estimated [PDF] the fair market value of college players, based on how much they could make professionally; they estimated a University of Louisville basketball player's market value for 2011-2012 at $1,632,103. An employee making that much in Kentucky would run up against worker's comp maximums, which are pegged to the state's average weekly wage. If that employee were totally disabled for a year from an on-the-job injury, he or she would get $39,139.88.

Workers' compensation benefits are paid by employers themselves. But NCAA colleges and universities have argued in court that their players are "student-athletes," not employees — so when they're injured, the schools don't have to pay.

Ware does get to keep his scholarship, which covers most (though not necessarily all, according to the Drexel researchers) of the cost of attending Louisville. But he'll still be incapacitated for a big chunk of time at an important period for the development a young basketball player. While he's not a top NBA prospect, such a future is not out of the question, and top Division I players of his ilk often go on to earn good wages overseas even if the NBA is unattainable. But any attempt by Ware to make it in the pros will be made more difficult by the time he's losing to injury, not to mention its potential lingering physical effects, and for that he won't be compensated at all.

Sorry for this.

In 1925 there was a really bad fire at the Madame Tussauds wax museum in London. Here's whatThe Guardian at the time had to say:

An eye-witness who lives opposite Madame Tussaud's said in an interview that the fire was a wonderful spectacle. Strong red and golden flames leapt 50 feet from the roof of the building. The wax models could be distinctly heard sizzling.

The following wax figures survived the fire...
