The Top 9 Conspiracy Theories Used To Explain A Massive Corruption Scandal In Turkey
A sprawling corruption investigation reaches deep into the government of Turkey’s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. But who’s really to blame?
Umit Bektas / Reuters
ISTANBUL, Turkey — Turkish prosecutors unveiled a sweeping anti-corruption campaign this week that reaches deep into the country's conservative government. More that 50 people have been detained so far, many of them tied to Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the powerful prime minister.
The investigations have drawn in business tycoons close to Erdogan, the sons of three of his ministers and the head of a state-run bank. They focus mainly on allegations of bribery, much of it tied to the kind of massive building projects redefining Turkey's cities. More explosive accusations and detentions may be on the way.
Alleged leaked evidence has meanwhile kicked the local press into a frenzy and flooded social media, including photos of millions of dollars in cash said to be kept in safes and shoeboxes inside suspects' homes. There are also transcripts of alleged phone calls — including one in which a businessman complains that a box of cash he delivered to a minister was so full it nearly burst.
After more than a decade in power, Erdogan's Justice and Development Party seems to be reeling. But it hasn't backed down, instead dismissing police chiefs in apparent retribution.
And as was the case during countrywide demonstrations against the government this summer, Erdogan and his allies have portrayed the crisis not as a domestic issue — but as a foreign-backed conspiracy. "There is a very dirty operation here," Erdogan said as the news swirled. He described the investigations as a "plot" to weaken the country, undertaken by "some circles inside and outside Turkey."
Erdogan didn't provide the details. But his supporters in the press and government have filled in the blanks. Below are some of the plot lines that have emerged in the wake of the corruption probe.

Poll: Half Of Muslim Students Say They've Been Bullied Because Of Their Religion
According to a survey of 500 Muslim students in California, 50% said people at school have made mean comments or spread rumors because of their religion. Others said they were physically bullied.

Half of Muslim students said they have been picked on because of their religion, according to a survey of 500 Muslim students in California ages 11 to 18.
The study, conducted by the California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, found that while most Muslim students said they feel comfortable with their classmates knowing about their religion, many reported being bullied in various ways.
One of out ten students said they have been slapped, kicked, punched or hit because of their religion, and 50% said someone at school made mean comments to them or spread rumors about them because of their religion. At least 17% of female students who wear a hijab said they experienced offensive touching or pulling of their hijab.
"Being called 'terrorist' or 'Bin laden' is still a reality for many American Muslim students," CAIR-LA Civil Rights Manager Fatima Dadabhoy said in a statement. "Throughout the course of this study, we were alarmed to find that many Muslim students didn't even deem this as a form of bullying."
The study found only 32% of students reported this behavior to a teacher, and 42% said reporting it to an adult helped the situation.
"Through this report, we hope to show that a decision to dismiss mistreatment as a natural consequence of being Muslim in America, or simply part of growing up, is unacceptable and normalizes a toxic school environment," Dadabhoy said.
Here are some of the highlights from the study:

More Americans Than Ever See "Big Government" As The Biggest Threat To The Future Of The U.S.
Nearly three-fourths of Americans think big government is a bigger threat to the future of the country than big business or big labor, according to Gallup.
The percentage of Americans who believe big government is the biggest threat to the U.S. is higher than it's ever been in the six decades Gallup has asked the question, according to poll data released Thursday.
"Even though Americans have always viewed big government as the greatest threat, the degree to which they do so has been varied," Jeffrey Jones of Gallup wrote. "In recent decades, since the start of the Clinton administration, perceptions of big government as a threat have varied depending on the party of the president."
Republicans are more likely to believe big government is the biggest threat than independents or Democrats. According to the poll, 92% of Republicans believe this compared to 56% of Democrats.
"Americans have consistently viewed big government as a greater threat to the United States than either big business or big labor, but never more than they do now," Jones wrote. "That may be partly a reaction to an administration that favors the use of government to solve problems. Also, the revelation of widespread government monitoring of U.S. Internet activity may be a factor in raising Americans' concern about the government."

Bates Motel (A&E)
The story of Norman Bates — recounted in Alfred Hitchcock's jangling Psycho — is only too familiar to most people. But under the watchful eye of executive producers Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse, the Twin Peaks-esque Bates Motel offers a fresh look at Norman's formative years (despite the fact that the series is set in the present day and in a different location), including his relationship with his overbearing, quixotic mother, Norma (a stellar Vera Farmiga) after they purchase a run-down motel on the Oregon coastline and discover that their new sleepy town holds all manner of deadly secrets. As Norman and Norma, Freddie Highmore and Farmiga are riveting to watch, their damaged psyches threatening to erupt into violence at any moment. The result is an eerie and off-kilter drama about the things that bind us.
A&E
The Bletchley Circle (PBS)
This three-episode British import — about a quartet of women who worked as codebreakers at Bletchley Park during World War II and reunite years later in order to entrap a serial killer when his pattern emerges — was a taut, thrilling chase as well as a nuanced portrait of the changing role of women in the 1950s, as each of the ladies struggles with a life of mundanity after playing such a pivotal role in the war. No surprise that another go-around is on tap for the amateur sleuths; The Bletchley Circle was downright gripping.
ITV
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Fox)
From creators Mike Schur and Dan Goor (Parks and Recreation) comes this workplace comedy about a police precinct in Brooklyn with a consistently great comedic ensemble (Andre Braugher's Captain Ray Holt and Chelsea Peretti's caustic Gina Linetti already standouts). Plus, any comedy that embraces diversity yet doesn't reduce its characters to stereotypes (no sassy Latinas here!) deserves to be celebrated. Deadpan funny.
Fox
Hannibal (NBC)
Beautifully grotesque or grotesquely beautiful? Hannibal — inspired by the Thomas Harris novel Red Dragon and adapted by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) — is both, bringing some of the most disturbingly gorgeous sequences on television. As the titular doctor, Mads Mikkelsen is appropriately roguish and dangerous, a cunning serial killer with an appetite for destruction. Throw in Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne, and Caroline Dhavernas (plus a slew of worthy supporting actors and guest stars) and you have the makings of a blood-curdling drama that will give you the most breathtaking nightmares you've ever had.
