This Is The Most Profound — And Unexpected — Speech About Cultural Identity You'll Read Today

You will fall in love with Gina Rodriguez, star of The CW’s Jane the Virgin , after reading her powerful and impromptu speech. “The way I grew up, I never saw myself on screen.”

Getty

Jane the Virgin is not The CW's typical show — there are no demons, no vampires, and no forces of darkness — so it's incredibly fitting that star Gina Rodriguez is not interested in being your typical Hollywood actress.

A fact that became quickly clear as Rodriguez, who was born in Chicago and is of Puerto Rican descent, promoted the family comedy — about a twentysomething who is accidentally inseminated — at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills on July 18.

In the first question posed to her at the panel, Rodriguez was asked why she chose Jane the Virgin over Lifetime's Devious Maids, another show she was in consideration for, as her first major Hollywood role.

Her answer, published in full below, not only offers a thoughtful deconstruction of how Hollywood represents Latinas, but proves why Rodriguez is exactly the kind of star every network — and culture — needs more of.

I wouldn't say that I chose Jane over Devious Maids. When I was presented with Devious Maids after Sundance, after I did a film at Sundance and I had an ABC holding deal, I found it limiting that that was the one that was available to me. I found it limiting for the stories that Latinos have. For the stories that Americans have, I feel like there's a perception that people have about Latinos in America specifically — somebody growing up in Chicago, English being my first language, Spanish being my second — that we are perceived a very certain way.

Our stories have been told, and they're not unmoralistic, you know, being a maid is fantastic. You know, I have many family members that have fed many of their families on doing that job, but there are other stories that need to be told. And I think that the media is a venue and an avenue to educate and teach our next generation. And, sadly, right now the perception they have of Latinos in America are very specific to maid, landscape, pregnant teen. Mind you, I am playing pregnant but not a teen.

I didn't become an artist to be a millionaire. I didn't become an actor to wear Louis Vuitton. I have to give this dress back when we're done. I became an actor to change the way I grew up. The way I grew up, I never saw myself on screen. I have two older sisters. One's an investment banker. The other one is an doctor, and I never saw us being played as investment bankers and actor. And I realized how limiting that was for me. I would look at the screen and think, 'Well, there's no way I can do it, because I'm not there.' And it's like as soon as you follow your dreams, you give other people the allowance to follow theirs.

And for me, to look on younger girls and to say, 'Well, Gina's like me, maybe not necessarily the same skin color, maybe not necessarily the same background, but like that's me. I'm not alone. I can do it too.' So every role that I've chosen has been ones that I think are going to push forward the idea of my culture, of women, of beauty, my idea of liberating young girls, of feeling that they have to look at a specific beauty type. And I wasn't going to let my introduction to the world be one of a story that I think has been told many times.

I wanted it to be a story that was going to liberate young girls and say, 'Wow, there we are too, and we're the doctors, and we're the teachers, and we're the writers, and we're the lawyers, and I can do that too. And I don't have to be a perfect size zero. I can be a perfect size me.' And that's what I live. So Jane, I waited for her patiently. And now she's here. And thank you for being here with us. Because this is a dream come true to me.

16 Celebrities Who Are Definitely Time Lords

This Woman Has Been Confronting Her Catcallers — And Secretly Filming Their Reactions

Earlier this summer, Lindsey began handing out cards to Minneapolis men, explaining what’s wrong with street harassment.

"'Bitch' means that you're sexy."

Several weeks ago, 28-year-old Minneapolis resident Lindsey was standing on an escalator when a stranger began touching her hair and calling her "blondie." When she told the man he "could just say 'hi' next time," she said, he began screaming at her and calling her ugly. The situation reminded Lindsey — a longtime confronter of catcallers, most notably in last year's Craigslist ad gone viral — that while she could control her reaction to street harassers, she couldn't always anticipate their reaction to being confronted.

It was then she had the idea for Cards Against Street Harassment — pocket-sized cards women could download, print, and hand out to their catcallers, explaining why the attention was unwanted without even speaking.

"When you walk down the street do random strangers comment on how you look?" one card asks. "No? Wow. That must be nice."

cardsagainstharassment.com

Of course, Lindsey still engages with the men she encounters. But now, with the cards as her platform, she films the conversations as a "cathartic extra response," she told BuzzFeed.

"I am genuinely interested in what place this is coming from," said Lindsey, who asked to only be identified by her first name. Lindsey's tone in the videos is obviously confrontational, but also curious — never combative.

"The first time that I caught it, I was just on the phone with my sister and the guy interrupted my phone call and tried to hug me," she said.

“Marry that girl… How ‘bout what I say?”

You may remember Benji Cowart, the dad from Nashville, Tennessee who wrote a parody to Magic!’s hit song “RUDE.” Well now, singer Nicky Costabile has responded with the “daughter’s” side of the story.

Nicky Costabile / Via youtube.com

In an interview, Nicky told BuzzFeed she created the song solely because she thought it was a fun idea, and she is in no way the “daughter” mentioned in Benji’s mega-viral parody video.

"My friend Marisa DiFrisco came up with the lyrics and I thought it would be funny to make a video replying to the Dad's perspective! This is just a friendly parody speaking from a girl's view."

Nicky also told BuzzFeed she thinks “marriage is beautiful” and “hopes to be married one day,” even if it may seem like otherwise in her video.

Tiesto has traveled a lot in his 20+ years in the music business, as he's gone from playing small shows in Europe to headlining international festivals all over the world. In honor of the release of his sixth studio album, A Town Called Paradise, we asked the superstar Dutch EDM to reflect on which places in the world he considers paradise.

"Most of my favorite paradises are cities because I'm a very urban kind of guy," Tiesto told BuzzFeed. "I like to be in the city. I like nature, but I haven't spent much time in nature, to be honest. Sometimes on the beach in Miami maybe, or in Sydney. But for the rest, I'm very urban."

Las Vegas

somchaij/Thinkstock

"It's one of my favorite places to go, and it's also the inspiration for the album, since half of it was recorded there. It's a great place to visit for a week, and you can party really hard, like everybody always does, but there's so much other stuff to see and do. You have a beautiful lake — Lake Mead is there. You can take a boat, surf, hang out there for a day."

The Summer Humanity Became Unnecessary At The Movies

Movies like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes , Godzilla , and Transformers: Age of Extinction prove you don’t need people. Well, not when you have talking primates, giant monsters, and robot aliens.

Caesar arms up in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation

After kicking off with a heartwarming montage that indicates a plague has wiped out most of mankind, the newly released Dawn of the Planet of the Apes picks up not with its human survivors but with the intelligent primates, who've set up an idyllic pan-simian community out in the woods. Meanwhile, this summer's Transformers: Age of Extinction cheerily soldiers on without Shia LaBeouf's Sam Witwicky, the main character of the first three films, giving his absence nary a mention (not even from his bestie Bumblebee) as he's replaced with a new lead, Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg). And though Godzilla has an ensemble cast, the people in its story largely got in the way of what was really a battle between giant monsters who barely noticed the ant-like beings scuttling at their feet, frantically trying to avoid getting squished.

Though this string of summer blockbusters still features traditional big names (Wahlberg) as well as some more offbeat choices (Godzilla's graced by French icon Juliette Binoche, while Apes has Aussie up-and-comer Jason Clarke), they all play second fiddle to their non-human co-stars, visual effects, motion capture, and vocal performances, all of which come across as just as real as the people in the frame...and usually a lot more interesting. Technologically, we've certainly reached a point where a film can be primarily trusted to a creation like Apes' Caesar, performed by Andy Serkis (who also consulted on Godzilla) — the enhanced chimp has an arc more dramatic and soulful than any of the human cast members. In all, the movies have never felt so indifferent to humanity.

15 Roles That Make Us Grateful For Elaine Stritch

RIP to the ultimate lady who lunches.

Melba Snyder, Pal Joey (1952)

More than a decade after the original 1940 production of John O'Hara's musical about manipulative small-time nightclub performer Joey Evans (Gene Kelly) closed, Stritch was cast as part of the 1952 revival cast. She played ambitious reporter Melba Snyder, and her stand-out song "Zip," about her interview with Gypsy Rose Lee, is still a fan favorite.

Grace Hoylard, Bus Stop (1955)

In William Inge's drama, set in a rural Kansas diner during a snowstorm, Stritch played diner owner Grace. The performance earned her her first Tony nomination, for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

Maggie Harris, Goldilocks (1958)

This musical parody of the silent film era earned Stritch her first true starring role as Maggie Harris, a musical comedy actress who's retiring to marry into high society. But a silent filmmaker cons her by convincing her she's contractually bound to star in his movie.

Mimi Paragon, Sail Away (1961)

Mimi Paragon, Sail Away (1961)

Stritch's next starring gig didn't come quite as easy. In 1961, she was cast in Noël Coward's Sail Away in a relatively minor role and was only promoted to the starring role of Mimi Paragon when opera singer Jean Fenn proved "too operatic" for the part. Soon, Fenn's role was eliminated and all the songs went to Stritch. "Every time she went onstage, [she] was a sensation," Coward said of the actress' performance, which earned her a Best Actress in a Musical Tony nomination in 1962.

51 Seriously Badass Ladies Who Will Make You Proud To Be A Woman

“Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.” ― Nora Ephron

Chris Ritter / BuzzFeed

I spend a disproportionate amount of my day thinking about all the awesome women in the world, and how I can be more like them. I've always felt like there was something special about being a woman: an innate, magical strength that could overcome any obstacle. Women are deep, feeling creatures. We spend our days in between the layers of the things that are said, mulling over each moment for a sense of purpose.

It was strange, then, when I got older and realized that the world didn't always get that girls — women — were magical beings. The older I got, the more I felt the need to defend my specialness, and that of the women around me.

There are those who aren't interested in what women have to say — they would rather place us as props in a man's story. It's hard not to get dejected when you realize you may not be the protagonist of your own life, but I found solace in the lives of of the strong, interesting, complicated women around me. Women who didn't wait for the world to come to them but rather went after the world. Women who refused to be furniture in someone else's house. These were the women who saved me from myself, who made me want to grow up, and into, the fullest expression of who I could be.

For as long as I can remember, I've kept a running list of exceptional women in my mind. This is my list; it's not perfect or complete. There are still those whose stories and voices have yet to be heard. I hope one day I can add them to my list. But mostly, I hope you have your own list, and that it never stops growing.
