“I often wonder what I’d do if there weren’t any books in the world.”

Giovanni's Room is James Baldwin's 1956 novel about an American man whose life is irrevocably altered by an affair with an Italian bartender he meets in Paris named Giovanni. Controversial at the time for its portrayal of homosexuality, the nuance and emotion Baldwin brought to the subject is the reason it has endured as a classic that continues to be enjoyed by readers gay and straight to this day.

First Conviction Under California's "Revenge Porn" Law Sees L.A. Man Sent To Prison

Noe Iniguez, 36, was found guilty of three criminal counts, including posting the unauthorized photo, as well as two violations of restraining orders, L.A.'s Office of the City Attorney announced in a statement Monday.

Iniguez used an alias to post derogatory comments about his former girlfriend on her employer's Facebook page in December 2013.

In March 2014, he posted a topless photograph of her on the same Facebook page, labeling her a "drunk" and a "slut", and calling for her to be fired from her job.

Under a California law passed in 2013, it is illegal to post nude or sexual images of an individual online with the purpose of causing emotional distress.

The victim, who had been in a four-year relationship with Iniguez, had previously been granted a restraining order against him after she received several harassing text messages.

Judge David Fields sentenced Iniguez to one year in prison and 36 months of probation, as well as ordering him to attend domestic violence counseling and keep away from his former girlfriend.

"California's new revenge porn law gives prosecutors a valuable tool to protect
victims whose lives and reputations have been upended by a person they once
trusted," L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer said in a statement.

"This conviction sends a strong message that this type of malicious behavior will not be tolerated," Feuer said.

Numerous books have been written to address the problem of girl-on-girl relational aggression —

Like gossiping, spreading negative rumors, threatening to end friendships, talking trash behind each others' backs, and excluding others from social groups. Think burn books (hi, Kendall Jenner!), blacklists, and manipulation. You know the deal.

Numerous books have been written to address the problem of girl-on-girl relational aggression —

Previous wisdom held that boys handled their aggression through physical violence and intimidation, while girls didn't have the same physical outlet — so they resorted to using this sort of psychological warfare against each other.

"Every time there's a study on relational aggression, it's about the girls," Pamela Orpinas, Ph.D., professor in the department of health promotion and behavior in the college of public health at the University of Georgia, told BuzzFeed Life. "And the books are about the girls, and the websites are about the girls. And we have very little about the boys."

So she and her colleagues at the University of Georgia conducted a longitudinal study that included boys and girls. And in their research, they found that boys use relational aggression, too. Actually, way more than girls do.

Sen. Al Franken Demands Lyft Explain Its Privacy Policies

The senator expresses concern that Lyft’s revised restrictions on access to customer data still does not clearly define which Lyft employees have access.

Jose A. Iglesias/Miami Herald / MCT

In a letter to Lyft, U.S. Senator Al Franken called on the transit company and Uber's biggest competitor to provide explicit details about its privacy policy.

"Consumers must be able to make informed decisions about whether and with whom they share personal information, and must be assured that when such information is shared it will receive the utmost protection," the letter reads.

The letter comes after BuzzFeed News reported that a NY Uber executive accessed this reporter's data and information without permission. Though Lyft employees, as BuzzFeed News reported (a story that Sen. Franken later cited), have the same access to user data that Uber employees do the company chose not to comment on the privacy issues or their general privacy rules as "a matter of policy."

Sen. Franken, the chairman of the subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law, included a list of 10 questions for Lyft to answer. Specifically, in light of revised restrictions on which employees have access to user information that a Lyft spokeswoman said the company imposed, Sen. Franken asked that Lyft disclose which employees still have access to data and what qualifies as a proper use of data. Furthermore, the Minnesota senator asks that Lyft explain whether accessing Re/Code reporter Liz Gannes' account without permission was a violation of past or current policies.

The senator also asks Lyft to divulge what kind of privacy training employees underwent and what methods of monitoring "improper use of customer data" Lyft has employed.

"It is critically important that sound privacy policies are not only established but are also adequately communicated to employees and affiliates, as well as customers, and are appropriately enforced," Sen. Franken writes. "I am particularly concerned about this in light of reports of past conduct suggesting inadequate regard among Lyft executives for customers' privacy."

Sen. Franken asks that Lyft respond by December 31.

A group of 25 students organised a rally against tuition fees at the University of Warwick. It descended into chaos after police emerged and used CS spray against students, arresting three.

Three students were arrested and several more were CS-sprayed after a peaceful anti-tuition fees protest at Warwick University turned violent.

View Video ›

The video above shows the moment one of the protesters was CS-sprayed. The full clip was released earlier on the Warwick Free Education society's website.

In it, police officers can be seen using CS spray, shoving students and putting one in a headlock and voices can be heard screaming in the background.

CS spray is used by police as a temporary incapacitant and is "used when appropriate by officers when they feel that the offender poses a risk to themselves and/or the police officers and others in the vicinity."

The society had organised the rally in coordination with a "day of action" against tuition fees, organised by the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts.
