The premise is that you're a human, but you attend an elite high school for pigeons (who have become human sized due to a nuclear accident). In the high school, you date and do other normal high school things.

It's a wildly popular game in Japan. BuzzFeed's Cates Holderness has actually been playing this game for years and comes in to talk to us about how it works.

6 Shocking Facts About Indigenous Imprisonment In Australia

We are better at putting Indigenous people in prison than keeping them in school.

1. The number of Indigenous people in jail is skyrocketing.

1. The number of Indigenous people in jail is skyrocketing.

In the past 10 years the rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander imprisonment has increased by 88%, compared to the non-Indigenous imprisonment rate which has increased by 28%.

Indigenous Social Justice Commissioner Mick Gooda says the situation is absolutely unacceptable.

"I've got to invent new adjectives to describe what we've got at the moment; disaster, emergency. The government's got to start listening to us."

Sixteen of the country's leading Indigenous welfare and legal groups, known as the National Justice Coalition, launched the "Change the Record" campaign in Sydney today.

They're hoping to stop the soaring Indigenous incarceration rate, which has reached an all time high, and to lobby state and federal governments to invest in early intervention programs to prevent crime.

National Justice Coalition co-chair Kirstie Parker told BuzzFeed News, "Surely the place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is not in prison in these numbers, [the place] is safe in our families and in our communities."

Indigenous Australians only make up 2% of the Australian population, yet they make up more than 27% of the nation's prison population. In the Northern Territory 90% of the prison population is Aboriginal.

3. Young Indigenous people are not scared of prison.

3. Young Indigenous people are not scared of prison.

Young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are 24 times more likely to be incarcerated than non-Indigenous young people. Half of Australia's juvenile detention population identify as Indigenous.

Seventeen-year-old Kobie Duncan (pictured) could have been one of those statistics. Kobie started taking drugs at 13 and at 16 he overdosed on ecstasy. He says that was a wake up call and he now wants to be a role model. Kobie says prison is not a deterrent for many Indigenous youths.

"Most of my family have been in prison. For a lot of my mates, that is all they talk about. My cousin, he's been in and out [of prison] all his life and calling it a second home. It hurts to hear that stuff. My own cousin said I should go to jail because it was good."

Should Kagan And Ginsburg Recuse Themselves From Marriage Case? Bobby Jindal Thinks It's A "Fair Question"

“If he had his way, they would both recuse themselves from every case because they are liberal activists,” says a spokeswoman for the likely Republican presidential candidate.

Louisiana's Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal joined lawmakers in his state Wednesday in suggesting two liberal justices recuse themselves from the landmark same-sex marriage case currently before the Supreme Court.

The Louisiana House of Representatives passed a resolution earlier this week urging Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan to withdraw from the case because "they have engaged in public conduct suggestive of bias." The resolution made headlines for the fact that not a single "no" vote was cast — though one Democratic legislator later said some of her pro-LGBT colleagues likely weren't paying attention.

BuzzFeed News asked Jindal's office whether the likely presidential candidate agreed that Ginsburg and Kagan should recuse themselves.

"It's a fair question in that they have officiated same-sex weddings, which is the subject of the decision," said spokeswoman Shannon Bates. "If he had his way, they would both recuse themselves from every case because they are liberal activists who see the bench as a means of enacting their agenda."

Some conservative religious leaders have similarly called this week for the justices to bow out of the marriage case, with one minister arguing that by performing weddings for same-sex couples they have committed "an unparalleled breach of judicial ethics."

As Jindal prepares to announce his 2016 presidential candidacy, he is aggressively courting conservative Christians.

11 New Movies That Show Female Filmmakers Are Forces To Be Reckoned With

$
0
0

No need to wait for Wonder Woman to see something from a female director. Here are 11 new movies by women that played at the Tribeca Film Festival that should be on your radar.

James Franco and Amber Heard in The Adderall Diaries, Athalia Routier and Galatéa Bellugi in Being 14, Cillian Murphy in Aloft.

A24 / Les Films du Lendemain / Allen Fraser

It's not news that Hollywood has been failing female filmmakers. According to a recent study from the Sundance Institute and Women in Film, only 4.1% of the top-grossing movies from 2002 to 2014 — the superhero sagas, YA adaptations, animated hits, and franchise installments that get the biggest investments in terms of budget and marketing, and that are seen by the widest audiences — were directed by women.

The departure of Michelle MacLaren from Wonder Woman, which would have made her the first female director of a superhero movie, due to "creative differences" was just the latest instance in which a major studio seemed to have trouble turning the reins of a high-profile project over to a woman. MacLaren has since been replaced by Patty Jenkins, who was once slated to direct Thor 2 before leaving due to, yes, "creative differences."

Wonder Woman's still slated to happen, but in the meanwhile, if you want to see work from women, you'd better turn to the indie world, which, while still male-dominated, is a much more welcoming place. At this year's just-concluded Tribeca Film Festival, there were 32 female directors to be found behind the cameras of the 101 features in the lineup. Here are the films of theirs that we saw, proof that women are making movies, and some very good ones, even if the multiplex has yet to figure that out.

The Adderall Diaries

The Adderall Diaries

A24

Director: Pamela Romanowsky

Pamela Romanowsky's first feature is based on the best-selling memoir by Stephen Elliott of the same name. James Franco, who hasn't been this good in a while, plays the BDSM enthusiast and addict author, who's paralyzed by writer's block. Instead of finishing the short story collection he owes his publishers, Stephen numbs himself with every drug imaginable and then pays to feel something by hiring sex workers to, on one occasion, attach clothespins to his body and rip them off in one foul swoop. Soon he's forced to take another look at the nightmarish childhood that provided fodder for his earlier book, thanks largely to the loss of his mother and his incredibly harsh father (played by a scary-good Ed Harris).

Though the film gets crowded at times, The Adderall Diaries is a brutally honest depiction of the complicated relationships between parents and their children, and it also challenges the audience to question how much our memories are anchored in truth or tainted by how we choose to seem them. —Jaimie Etkin

Where to see it: A24 acquired the film out of Tribeca. In a deal with DirecTV, the satellite service provider will show the film prior to its theatrical release, a date for which has not yet been announced.

Indonesia's Death Penalty Or Australia's Asylum Policy?

Following the state-sanctioned executions of two Australian citizens in Indonesia, Australia is being urged to step up its opposition to the death penalty.

Indonesia carried out the executions of eight foreign nationals, despite global condemnation and in breach of its obligations as a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

It states that the death penalty should only be imposed for "the most serious crimes, that is, those involving intentional killing, and only after a fair trial."

Just this year, Australia has been accused of breaching the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child for its refugee deal with Cambodia and for violating the UN Convention Against Torture with the indefinite detention of asylum seekers on Manus Island.
