A New Australian PM Could Offer Hope To First Refugee Baby Born On Nauru
Pressure is on Malcolm Turnbull to set a new agenda for asylum seekers living in limbo on the island.
This baby girl is the first baby born to a refugee family living in Nauru.
Her name is Nourkayas, and she is the third child for the Rohingya family, who already have a seven-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl.
The family are longer in the Australian-run detention centre on Nauru, but live in one of the open camps for refugees on the island.
Baby and mother are reportedly doing well, but refugee advocates have concerns about her health and safety on the island.
With Nauru's lack of facilities and antenatal care, an infant mortality rate twenty times higher than Australia and with no hope of resettlement in Australia, they say her future is bleak.

The baby was born at a hospital in Nauru after her mother refused to be transferred to Port Moresby to give birth.
"The fact that refugees are sent to PNG and asylum seeker mothers are sent to Australia to have their babies says that Australian authorities do not believe that Nauru is safe," said Ian Rintoul, from the Refugee Action Coalition.
Rintoul told BuzzFeed News that all pregnant refugees and asylum seekers used to be flown to Australia to give birth, but the policy changed in January.
"There needs to be consistent policy from the government. All mothers-to-be should be brought, with their families, to Australia to give birth, where there is proper medical facilities to ensure the health of mother and baby," he said.
In the Nibok camp on the island, the family are housed in converted shipping containers. With little ventilation, they can get unbearably hot, with frequent water and electricity shortages.

"It's an intriguing situation," Rintoul told BuzzFeed News. "Nauru will not allow resettlement there, and the Rohingya are not recognised in Myanmar or Bangladesh. Essentially they are a stateless group of people."
He said there could be grounds under the Nauru constitution for the baby to apply for citizenship, but that it's not yet being pursued. "Nobody wants to stay on Nauru," he added.
“The unfortunate truth is that there is no future for families and children on Nauru,” the Greens’ immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young told BuzzFeed News.
“There is no long term plan in place to provide these families with any type of permanent, lasting support.
“The conditions for women and children in the detention camp are appalling and those who have already been resettled on the island have been exposed to serious abuse and harassment.
“The collapse of the legal and judicial systems on Nauru has exposed these children to danger and their families have no way to protect themselves.
“I urge our new Prime Minister to consider the hopelessness of the situation on Nauru and bring these children and families to Australia before more damage is done.”

Guards Allegedly Use Snapchat To Film Indigenous Australian Teens Eating Animal Faeces
The Northern Territory Police have launched a criminal investigation into behaviour by Don Dale Youth Detention Centre staff.
The Northern Territory Attorney-General John Elferink has confirmed that police are investigating several allegations of criminal conduct by prison guards.
"Police are currently investigating a number of allegations in relation to the Don Dale Juvenile Detention Centre," Elferink said, without adding further comment.
Earlier this week 15-year-old Indigenous teenager Travis told a youth forum that while he was in Don Dale, the staff made young people fight each other for entertainment, rewarding the winner with food.
"You get Coke and a chocolate once a week. So, boys, they wanted that a bit more than once a week, so workers would make them fight and stuff and do stuff that kids usually wouldn't do just so they could get it," he claimed.
Travis also said that staff members filmed a detainee eating bird faeces and sent the footage to people via the messaging app Snapchat.
"There was poo sitting on the ground one time and a young fella got dared to eat its shit and they videoed it and put it on Snapchat to all their friends and they gave him a Coke and a chocolate."

The Northern Territory's peak Aboriginal legal body has welcomed the investigation.
CEO of the Northern Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) Priscilla Collins told BuzzFeed News the revelations are hardly a surprise.
"We see this day in day out, and the system has failed these young people all the way right up until they're in court and then juvenile detention," Collins said.
She says that Travis and the majority of young Indigenous people are needlessly jailed because they're on remand awaiting sentencing or trial, unable to afford bail or without a home to go to.
"Unfortunately with this young man, he was in and out of juvenile detention a lot of time but always on remand, never actually sentenced to an actual term and he was only in there on remand because he had nowhere to go."
NAAAJA CEO Priscilla Collins (Allan Clarke / BuzzFeed)
The claims are the latest in a string of shocking allegations against staff at Don Dale.
Last week a report by the Northern Territory Children’s Commission revealed that a group of Aboriginal teenagers were sprayed with tear gas and had ‘spit mask’ hoods placed over their heads while in in the detention centre in 2014.
The teens acted out after being kept in solitary confinement for up to 72 hours in cells with no air-conditioning and no water. Prison guards from a nearby adult prison were called in to descalate the situation.
The guards pepper sprayed the teens for up to eight minutes and the incident was filmed. When one of the detainees tried to climb through a window a guard can be heard saying, “no let the fucker come through because when he comes through, he will be off balance. I’ll pulverise the little fucker. Oh shit we’re recording hey [laughs].”
The Northern Territory has the second highest rate of Indigenous incarceration in the country after Western Australia.
Aboriginal young people make up almost 96 percent of the juvenile detention population in the Northern Territory despite only comprising 44 percent of the population aged between 10 and 17.

"New Humans Of Australia" Is The Perfect Response To Negative Reporting Of Refugees
Celebrating the voices of refugees and migrants who call Australia home.
"New Humans of Australia" is a Facebook page and project celebrating the voices of refugees and migrants.
Facebook: NewHumansOfAustralia
It's been running for about a month and aims to show the positive stories behind refugees that aren't always explored in mainstream media.
The founder of the project, Nicola, told BuzzFeed News that she got the idea after working with a lot of refugees within the Australian government's Adult Migrant English Program.
"I got to hear a lot of amazing stories. At the same time, the stories about refugees coming through the mainstream media were often negative."
"I've always been a huge fan of "Humans of New York", and was inspired to try the same style with the people I was working with."
Facebook: NewHumansOfAustralia
Nicola's favourite person to talk so so far has been Roda, a refugee who arrived in Sydney eight years ago after a long journey across Africa.

The reception has been overwhelming, says Nicola, with hundreds of comments and shares on each photo.
The page has also become an accidental forum, with discussions occurring regularly debating what "Australia" is as a country.
