10 Mormons React To The Church's Shift On Sexuality

Both gay and straight members of the Church and those raised Mormon shared their thoughts with BuzzFeed on what the change means to them and their community. “What remains to be seen is whether this will finally filter down to the actual members,” one said.

Jesse (left), gay

Jesse (left), gay

"To be honest, I don't think it represents a huge shift in "Salt Lake's" position. What remains to be seen is whether this will finally filter down to the actual members. Although the LDS Church tries to perpetuate an understanding, supportive stance, in many localities this just doesn't resonate ... My husband and I were married in June — we've never been happier in our lives. Our families haven't always been — and some still aren't — supportive of our happiness. It's great to see an apostle in the LDS Church telling members to respect our choices."

Josh, straight

Josh, straight

"I appreciate the Church taking a heads-on approach to the issue instead of avoiding how prevalent it is in our society now ... Some will criticize the Church for saying sexuality is not a choice, but that's been the consistent message of the Church since the beginning so I am proud of then embracing their message openly."

Kimberly, straight

Kimberly, straight

"I know I did not choose my sexuality, so I can't imagine why anyone thinks that LGBTQ people choose theirs. Mine is an inherent, integral part of my being. I firmly believe that LGBTQ people are no different. Although I was born and raised in the Mormon Church and have continued to actively participate into adulthood, I have always rejected the Church's teachings about homosexuality. And I now reject its use of the term 'same-sex attraction' and its characterization of LGBTQ people as 'suffering from same-sex attraction.' Those are homophobic phrases that reduce LGBTQ people's complex personalities and relationships to the fact of sexual attraction and the act of having sex."

Paxton, straight

Paxton, straight

"I think that many people are overreacting to the statement made by the Church. For years the Church has been of the opinion that it's not a sin to simply be homosexual. I disagree with people who believe the Church is merely pandering to the gay community in order to make up for their decision on Proposition 8. The Church is only restating the same stance they've had for years in order to clear up any confusion."

Fantasy Football Dos And Don'ts Week 14

Don't get put in a headlock of fantasy pain! Heed these tips!

DO Consider Nick Foles If You're In Need Of A Passer

DO Consider Nick Foles If You're In Need Of A Passer

Image by LM Otero / AP

Foles' first few games as an NFL starting QB have been inconsistent, but he finally put together a nice performance last week against Dallas, with 251 yards, a score, and, most importantly, no interceptions. Foles has the dreadful Tampa Bay passing defense to contend with this week, so it could finally be the time for him to air it out a bit and see if he can't make his own dent, particularly with LeSean McCoy still out of the starting lineup.

DON'T Bother With Philip Rivers

DON'T Bother With Philip Rivers

Image by Denis Poroy / AP

I mean, God help you if you're still starting Philip Rivers in fantasy football at this point. But it's conceivable; he is a name, after all; he was a Pro Bowler as recently as last year. But whether it's Rivers' fault or that of his crummy, badly coached, chronically underachieving team, he's been a disaster this year. Philip Rivers is 20th in the league in fantasy points. The jury's still out on whether Rivers has reached the end of his career as an effective passer or if he's just a victim of Norv Turner's hope-squishing vampire fangs, but either way, don't touch the dude until he re-proves himself.

"Star Wars" Was Based On A True Story

A galaxy far, far away looks awfully familiar. In Star Wars And History , historical scholars compare Lucas's universe to our own.

Say what you will about Star Wars, it is a vastly rich universe full of literally thousands of years of its own history. However, it is still a fictional universe. Star Wars and History aims to analyze the main historical beats and parallels that influenced Lucas and others when creating a galaxy far, far away.

From Tatooine as a reflection of the lawless American West to the link between Jedi and Templar Knights, from our own Death Stars (atomic bombs) to Princess Leia's origins in French Resistance fighting, Star Wars has a long, intimate relationship with humanity's sordid past.

One A Day Gift Guide: A Better Self

$

For obsessive types, there is no better gadget than a Fitbit One .

There are certain types of people in this world, people who do things like alphabetize their kitchen cabinets and sort their album covers by color, people who write down every weird dream they have involving Fiona Apple and photograph the pit of every avocado they eat. People who are compulsive catalogers of their life, in other words. The Fitbit One is for them.

The Fitbit One is technically a "fitness monitor" — a rather popular category of gadget lately, with the other notable example being Nike's FuelBand, which probably says something about Americans and health and quickfixes but whatever — so you might think it's a fitness device. And it is, in a sense. But the Fitbit One is, more than that, an unmerciful recorder of your entire life — or at least every part of it that pertains to movement and sleeping. The size of a strange finger, as you wear it (or holster it somewhere on your body), the Fitbit One automatically tracks steps, distance, stairs climbed, calories burned and (admittedly not as precisely) how well you sleep. Then it wirelessly syncs everything back to your computer, where it's uploaded to the internet, and your body's kinectic history is converted into a series of numbers and charts perfectly formatted for the obsessive self-statistician.

One could use this data to become healthier. To move more, sleep better and get fitter. Or one could simply bank it, like every other bit of information we generate about ourselves on a daily basis — the hundreds of Facebook photos, the thousands of tweets — creating a constantly compounded archive of the self. Just one more dimension of data. Either way, there is no more appropriate gift for the self-obsessed. It's $100.

Let's Not Freak Out Because Brittany Is Dating Boys On Glee

Glee 's Brittana was one of TV's most prominent same-sex pairings. Now that they're broken up, Brittany is hooking up with Sam — is that really such a bad thing?

Santana and Brittany do the titular deed in "The Break-Up."

Nobody said it was easy: when Glee decided to break up several of its most popular couplings, fans were bound to be upset. But the Brittana break-up cut especially deep. With so few strong lesbian relationships on television, it's easy to get attached to the story of cheerleaders in love.

Chances are Brittany and Santana will find each other again. I believe in love. I believe in the TV myth that high school relationships are forever. In the meantime, the two can and should date other people, as hard as it might be for hardcore shippers to accept. That's the healthy, mature thing to do -- just as ending a difficult long-distance relationship was.

Santana makes the adult decision to end her relationship with Brittany in "The Break-Up."

The problem for many Brittana fans is that Brittany seems to be moving on to Sam, a character who is just dopey enough to be perfect for her, except for the fact that he's a guy. While Santana came out as a lesbian last season, Brittany has always been more of a free agent. Still, viewers -- particularly Glee's large LGBT fanbase -- expected that she might just stick to the same sex.

And I get that: the old cliche of a female character dating a woman and then going back to guys isn't exactly long-gone. It's disappointing to begin identifying with a queer character, only to have her return to her hetero ways. But sometimes it's realistic, particularly in the case of a character like Brittany, who always seemed more in love with Santana the person than Santana the woman. Having Brittany date Sam now doesn't take away from what she had with Santana -- nor does it change Santana's stated orientation.

“I have been dreaming about this since I was a kid.”

"Johnny Football" has had a pretty good Freshman year.

A&M is 10-2 and the 20-year-old is the first quarterback in SEC history to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a season. He has also set SEC records for total yards in game with 557 yards, a record which he then broke himself two weeks later with 576 yards. He broke Cam Newton's record for total yards in a season with 4600 yards. He also set a Division-I-wide record among freshmen for rushing yards by a quarterback with 1,181 yards. He has already been named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year, and was the SEC Freshman of the Week nine times during the season.

Manziel is the second player from Texas A&M to win the Heisman. He accepted the award Saturday night at Best Buy Theater in Times Square, New York.
