Terribly Tasteless Ad For Dental Floss

For Equate, Walmart's brand of dental floss. Via Guatemala.

Just released Friday.
The awkward headline is probably because the ad was translated from Spanish for publicity purposes. But the idiocy of the idea translates just fine. In case you don't get the ad, the visual shows a young Osama bin Laden (according to the agency) throwing a plane at blocks meant to represent the World Trade Center. The dental floss is grabbing the plane before the problem "grows up."
The ad agency is Avance WWP.
Equate is a Walmart brand.

Quite possibly could be a spec ad that never ran, released by the agency to try to win awards. But if so, the agency is taking a big stupid chance doing it with a such a major brand.

Anyway: Could we stop — please — will the exploitation of the 9/11 massacre to sell products (more examples)?

Adrian Peterson could break the record for most rushing yards in a single season this year. Plays like this are a big reason why.

Adrian Peterson have a very good shot at breaking Eric Dickerson's record for most rushing yards in a season. Against the Rams, Peterson made that even more likely with this tremendous run.

A Poor Elderly Gentleman Took A Football Right In The Face

After scoring a touchdown, Rams receiver Danny Amendola spiked the ball, as players tend to do. Unfortunately, it took a bit of a bad bounce — into this dude's head.

The Rams lost to the Vikings today, but they made a bit of a comeback in the fourth quarter. Part of that comeback was this Danny Amendola touchdown.

It was a significant score for a player who has battled injuries all year, so Amendola spiked it: understandable. Unfortunately, it took a bit of a bad bounce.

"Nashville"

"Nashville"

Nashville may be an over-the-top prime-time soap opera, but it’s also one of the most accurate depictions of the record industry in recent pop culture, with characters who are forced to reckon with declining sales and painful marketing compromises. While it’s nice that the drama between Connie Britton’s and Hayden Panettiere’s characters has some grounding in the reality of contemporary country music, the most exciting thing about the show are the performances, like the Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen's rendition of The Civil Wars' gorgeous tune “If I Didn’t Know Better.”

Cover Of A Book...From 1983

Depicting the destruction of the World Trade Center.

"This is how Latin America suffers"

From the author's website, via Google Translate:

Jose Borja although Ecuadorian by birth, is best defined as a "world citizen". Veteran and hard life, has faced opponents as found in front, and difficulties that nobody thought existed. While he always emerged victorious, unfortunately two children gave their lives in the battlefield. For one day so decided to write what we say are his memoirs, but in reality have been slowly prophecies have been fulfilled. For example, the Twin Towers of New York predicted twenty years before it happened. The cover of this book was published after by many of the world print media highlighting the fact. Borja also has written countless reviews in national and international newspapers, with their traditional direct style, sharp and poignant. Recent years have devoted his life to support ex-merchant seamen and veterans like him, that fate has treated poorly and adrift as human beings.

It's not really the prediction that's eerie, it's the illustration: the collapsing tower, the falling people.

Obama: "Surely We Can Do Better Than This”

“Newtown, you are not alone,” Obama says at an interfaith vigil. “We'll have to change.”

View Video ›

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama sought to bring comfort to the people of Newtown and across the country Sunday night, speaking at a vigil to honor the 27 lives lost in Friday's shooting, but also called for national soul-searching — and action — to prevent future massacres.

"We as a nation are left with some hard questions," Obama said in a somber speech at Newtown High School after meeting with the families of the dead and the first responders who rushed to the scene of the carnage.

"We can't tolerate this anymore," he said, traveling for the fourth time of his presidency to a community torn by gunfire, but also referencing smaller acts of violence in cities and towns across the country. "These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change."

And the fourth time, Obama's lofty rhetoric gave way to a determined call for change. Stating that every generation is judged by how well it cares for the ones following it, Obama gave his brutal assessment that the country is failing to keep its children safe.

“If we’re honest with ourselves, the answer is no," he said. "We’re not doing enough, and we’ll have to change.”

"What choice do we have?" Obama added, visibly steeling himself as he faced the families. "Are we really prepared to say that we're powerless in the face of such carnage, that the politics are too hard?"

On Friday, speaking through tears and pausing to compose himself, Obama called for "meaningful action" after the shooting, and many in his party and across the country called for the immediate proposal of legislation to strengthen gun control. Obama didn't specify what steps he will take Sunday, but forcefully said he will “use whatever power this office hold to engage my fellow citizens…to prevent tragedies like this.”

"Are we prepared to say that such violence visited upon our children year after year after year is somehow the price of our freedom," Obama asked, in a sign that he will take up such legislation, even without mentioning the word "gun" in his speech. "No single law or set of laws can eliminate evil from the world," he added, "...but that can't be an excuse for inaction."

Closing his remarks after reading the first names of the 20 first graders who were shot dead, Obama called for the nation to come together — to stop acts of violence.

"Let us find the strength to carry on and to make our country worthy of their memory," he said, as sobs echoed through the auditorium.

What Sesame Street Can Teach Us About Loss

Thoughts from one of our most trusted sources: Big Bird.

Big Bird learns about death

In 1982, the actor who played Mr. Hooper on Sesame Street, Will Lee, died of a Heart Attack. After deliberation, the Sesame Street team decided to let the character die too, and took this moment to talk about death. The "Farewell, Mr. Hooper" episode aired November 24, 1983. You might want to grab some tissues.

2012's Most Talked-About Sex Scandals

From Gen. Petraeus to John Travolta, this year saw a lot of allegations (and some confirmations) of bad behavior by the famous and powerful.

Gen. David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell's email-documented romance.

Gen. David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell's email-documented romance.

This one definitely wins for complexity: the affair between a CIA chief and former general and his biographer, exposed by another woman who claimed said biographer had sent her harassing emails. And that woman, Jill Kelley, turned out to be an insolvent socialite who ran a questionable cancer charity and may or may not have exchanged inappropriate emails with General George Allen (he says there was no impropriety). And that's not even considering Jill Kelley's twin. Despite all this, the affair has faded somewhat from the public eye, with some pointing out that coverage of the news has veered into misogyny, and others wondering whether Petraeus really did anything so wrong.

The Secret Service's stingy visit with Colombian prostitutes.

The Secret Service's stingy visit with Colombian prostitutes.

This scandal broke when Secret Service agents staying at a hotel in Cartagena, Colombia allegedly refused to pay sex worker Dania Suarez (above) what she was owed. In addition to the resignation of several agents (including supervisor David Chaney, who also raised eyebrows by posting pictures of himself ogling Sarah Palin), the scandal sparked an investigation suggesting Secret Service agents might also have visited prostitutes in El Salvador, Panama, Romania and China. Which in turn suggests that this scandal, though it has cooled, may stay alive for a long time.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn's prostitution-ring investigation.

This scandal broke last year when Nafissatou Diallo accused Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexually assaulting her in a New York hotel room. But news of Strauss-Kahn's alleged misdeeds continued unabated in 2012 — he was accused of attending sex parties linked to an illegal prostitution ring, he was investigated in connection with an alleged gang rape (though this investigation was dropped), and he and his wife Anne Sinclair split up. But Diallo recently settled her civil suit against him (she's rumored to have gotten as much as $6 million), so 2013 could be quieter for DSK.

Kleiner Perkins's harassment and discrimination lawsuit.

Kleiner Perkins's harassment and discrimination lawsuit.

Ellen Pao (right), a partner at Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, alleges that another partner (not pictured) coerced her into having sex with him, and that when she broke things off, the company retaliated against her repeatedly for years. Her lawsuit, which is ongoing, has raised larger questions about how Silicon Valley companies treat female employees. We'll probably still be hearing about it, and the issues it raises, in 2013.
