We hate to rank these dogs because, unlike cats , all dogs are created equally awesome. However, these things must be done, so here's a countdown of the best dogs of the year.

So much skill in such a small fox-like body.
Take a lesson from this Boston Terrier: always lend a helping hand (or head), even if it's for a different species.

The Rupert Murdoch-owned New York Post labels Wayne LaPierre a “GUN NUT” and “NRA loon” in the wake of his bizarre news conference Friday. The Daily News piles on.
Last week, in the aftermath of the Newtown shooting, Murdoch tweeted his support for stricter gun laws.

It's Christmas weekend, which means you have ample time to do some serious Netflix Instant watching. Here are 20 shows you can watch from start to finish — and still have time to see your family.
Start one of these up, take a break for Christmas ham, and you'll still be able to finish the series before the food coma kicks in.
It's not quite Arrested Development, but Running Wilde did reunite Will Arnett and David Cross. And if you're feeling Felicity withdrawal, Keri Russell stars as Arnett's love interest Emmy.
Total Time: 4.5 hours
If you're gay or just gay-sensible, you'll appreciate Sordid Lives, a campy sitcom follow-up to the film of the same name. Stars LGBT icons Rue McClanahan and Caroline Rhea, among others.
Total Time: 6 hours
This one's kind of cheating: The 10th Kingdom was a miniseries. But this modern-day fairy tale mash-up is way better than ABC's Once Upon a Time, which you can also stream.
Total Time: 7 hours
All are cheaper than $50 — and that's even if you combine the pigs-in-a-blanket maker with the cat pipe.

If you're back home for the holidays, now is the time to go rooting through the attic or the basement for that hilarious letter you wrote to your parents or that surprisingly precocious short story. Or that funny picture you drew, or that collage? YOU GET THE PICTURE. Anyway, we want to publish some of these things on BuzzFeed Rewind, the website! Here's how to do that:
Here's a perfect example: A "Saved By The Bell" book that BuzzFeeder tinylion made back in the day and posted to BuzzFeed in its entirety here.
Go here and post some good pics of the awesome thing you made as a kid!
Shoot us an email at Community@buzzfeed.com with a link to your post. We'll collect them together at BuzzFeed's nostalgia vertical, BuzzFeed Rewind, and maybe even publish some on the front page of BuzzFeed.com so that the whole world can marvel at what a massive genius you were as a child. OK, let's do it! Now now now! :)
Now do the thing we just talked about! Hooray for nostalgia!
The gauzy layers of ice appear to sculpted by pixies. Due to their fragile nature, frost flowers rarely last past sun-up.
Source: en.wikipedia.org
The formation of frost flowers can only happen when freezing weather conditions occur while the ground itself is not frozen. The sap from plants will expand, causing long, thin cracks to form along the length of the stem. Water is then drawn through these cracks and freezes upon contact with the air. As more water is drawn through the cracks it pushes the thin ice layers further from the stem, causing a thin "petal" to form.

Christmas doesn't have to be the most stressful holiday of the year. You're totally allowed to take shortcuts, especially if you're playing host.

Catch up on all of the year's best music with this 11-hour megamix.
The sheer amount of amazing music that comes out every year is truly overwhelming, and almost impossible to keep up with. Even if you're paying close attention, you will inevitably miss something incredible because we all have cultural blind spots. This playlist — about 11 hours in total — covers a wide range of the year's best and most notable music, from chart pop and hip-hop to indie rock, punk, country, metal, EDM, and beyond. If you've been feeling a bit out of the loop, it's the perfect primer, but there's enough variety here that pretty much anyone is bound to run into a lot of stuff they either haven't heard or perhaps had dismissed in some way. Go into this with an open mind, and you are guaranteed to find something new that you will love.
Here's the playlist on Rdio...
And here it is on Spotify...

Shoplifting is expected to cost retailers $9 billion this holiday season. Thieves have been quite busy so far frisking various joints (but mostly Walmart).
ABC reports that six men and a woman stole $2,500 worth of stuff from Walmart and some other places. Authorities were trying to arrest one of the guys when he grabbed a baby and ran. The baby was later found at a house. The thief was not the baby's father.
A Walmart employee who noticed a group of women "stuffing items inside their purses" inside the Walmart notified an off-duty deputy from the sheriff's office who was working as a security guard in the store. The confrontation between the deputy and the women went from the store to the parking lot — the deputy opened a door to the car the alleged theives were in, but instead of stopping they revved the car forward. The car got away, but police found it nearby, with one of the women dead from a gunshot wound.

It was all menswear, and they got it from Nordstrom. Authorities call this kind of job a "smash and grab," with one Lieutenant telling WWD, "We have also seen more sophisticated operations, where they will use a mule who goes back and forth to a car to keep dumping things." Maybe these guys just couldn't resist the shiny purple coat Romeo Beckham wears in the new ads. Nothing has the ability to distract from illegal activity like a dude in an iridescent purple trench.

The women would allegedly steal makeup and jewelry from retailers and then sell their loot at a local swap meet. Authorities recovered merchandise worth more than $100,000 from the ladies.
Buying someone a cookbook for the holidays = Cool. Buying someone a little ingredient they'll use with it = The Coolest. Here's your guide to both.
FOR THE ONE WHO GRILLS A MEAN STEAK
Charred & Scruffed by Adam Perry Lang with Peter Kaminsky. Any good grilling book is less about specific recipes and more about technique. Adam Perry Lang's book is no different, but his technique certainly is. Rejecting the traditional wisdom of the-less-you-move-the-meat-the-better, Perry Lang's style is active: scruffing and flipping the meat as much as possible in order to create nooks and crannies where a crust can develop. He shows you how to make his signature meat paste, herb brush for basting, and board dressing — all compelling, delicious techniques that could change your grilling game.
Gift it with: A bottle of garlic salt, one of the ingredients in Perry Lang's master rub recipe.
FOR THE ONE WHO LOVES THE FARMERS' MARKET
Canal House Cooks Every Day by Christopher Hirsheimer and Melissa Hamilton. This cookbook is wonderful and gorgeous. Hamilton — who worked in the kitchens of Saveur, Martha Stewart Living, and Cook's Illustrated — is the duo's food stylist. Hirsheimer — former executive editor and founder of Saveur — is the photographer. Canal House is the studio and workshop kitchen in Lambertville, New Jersey from which they publish quarterly cookbooks. Their newest book reflects an entire year of cooking and is organized by season. Not to play favorites among favorites, but this is certainly one of the most inspiring of the year and could make just about anyone want to spend more time in the kitchen.
Gift it with: Dried chanterelle mushrooms.
Some people are born suspicious, and some are made.
