15 Inspiring Stories That Will Help You Make Your College Decision

Because where you spend these four (or more) years of your life is a pretty big deal.

Christina Lu / BuzzFeed

I recently asked BuzzFeed writers how they decided where they went to college. Here are some of their stories.

1. "All of my friends were going to colleges in Florida, and at some point I realized I'd gone to grade school, middle school, high school, and could potentially go to college with the same group of people I'd known since childhood. That would excite a lot of people, but it made me realize that I needed a huge change to really push myself, otherwise I'd likely be stuck in the same spot for a long time. So I applied to schools in Boston, the only other place my parents allowed me to apply, and luckily, I got in!"
Erin LaRosa

2. "I went to a school because I was recruited on a speech team scholarship for a team that, true story, is the most successful extracurricular team ever, in the history of anything (in terms of national championships won). I was super starstruck by this and sort of ignored the fact that I absolutely hated the school. That pretty soon caught up with me, and I ended up sort of freaking out and transferring out after my freshman year to a school in London. Don't go to a school you absolutely hate just because they are paying you a lot."
Kristin Chirico

3. "I decided to go to Mount Holyoke College because I really liked the campus and got super-good vibes there. The classes were really difficult and intensive, and it seemed like the student body was really intentional, if that makes any sense. You just didn't end up at Mt. Holyoke by accident. A year later, I began to feel really disenchanted and stifled by being on such a small campus in the middle of nowhere, so I transferred out. I chose Penn in Philly essentially because I loved Philadelphia, and I knew that even if the school was terrible, I'd have other opportunities in the city."

And you're totally obsessed with Future's Pharrell-produced jam "Move That Dope."

Because Pharrell does yoga in the video.

And also raps a killer verse on the song about drones and setting goals. And the song has its own vintage computer game.

So, lucky for you, crazy turntable genius Skratch Bastid blended these two songs together into one amazing song, called "Seasoned Dope." It's debuting on BuzzFeed today:

"I love 'Seasons' and was messing around with it at home," the Canadian DJ who's known around YouTube for expertly scratching up Star Wars songs, told BuzzFeed in an email. "I thought to myself that the dreamy synths would sound good with raps over it, sort of like "Wanna Be A Baller" by Lil Troy or "Fuck Faces" by Scarface. "Move That Dope" is basically the hottest rap joint out right now, and I demoed the vocal over it and it sounded great. The whole 'future' commonality was kind of a fluke, but it doesn't hurt."

Meet The 14-Year-Old Boy Who Could Help Save The Government Millions

Suvir Mirchandani says if the government uses the font Garamond instead of Times New Roman in its documents, it could save up to $400 million.

Fourteen-year-old Suvir Mirchandani published a study as part of a science fair that explains how the federal government could save millions of dollars each year by using a thinner font, the Associated Press reports.

Mirchandani, who lives in the Township of O'Hara, outside Pittsburgh, said he's had a longstanding interest in graphic design, and wanted to use computer science to promote environmental causes.

In sixth grade, he started noticing that while there was talk at school about saving paper, there wasn't much of a discussion about saving ink — which is much more expensive. So with the help of a software program the teen estimated how much ink different fonts used.

First, he collected random samples of his teachers' handouts and found the most commonly used characters (e, t, a, o and r). Then, he charted how often each character was used in four different typefaces: Garamond, Times New Roman, Century Gothic and Comic Sans. Finally, he used a software program to measure how much ink was used for each letter.

By using the font Garamond, which is a thinner font than Times New Roman, the federal government could save up to $400 million in ink costs, Mirchandani says.

"Ink is two times more expensive than French perfume by volume," Mirchandani says.

And he's not lying: Chanel No. 5 perfume sells at $38 per ounce, while the same amount of Hewlett-Packard printer ink can cost you up to $75, CNN reports.

He also calculated that switching the font of the school's paper from Times New Roman to Garamond could save his school about $21,000 a year in ink costs.

When The Monster Saves You

Four months after I came out to my middle school guidance counselor, she was arrested for sexual misconduct.

Christina Lu for BuzzFeed

The first person I told about the girls I wanted to kiss was my middle school counselor. I'd been seeing her without my mother's permission. I knew better than to ask my mother. But I spent most nights curled up in the bottom of my closet, thinking I'd die if I couldn't stop crying about the way I felt my body was betraying me, how it had been for a long time.

It was this fear that led me to the eighth-grade counselor's office on a Friday. I stood in her doorway, three minutes after the final bell, and told her I needed to talk. Without looking up from what she was writing, she pointed me to the permission slips pinned to her door. I looked at the slips, then back at her.

"I can't tell my mama I'm talking to you." She looked up then. Her jaw was set in a severe line, her light-blonde hair sat unmoving on her shoulders. My classmates always had jokes about her "man-jaw" and her "state fair hair." She'd always seemed hard to me, but "hard" didn't mean she couldn't help. She softened when she removed her glasses and considered me.

"I can't see you until you get the permission slip signed, sweetie. I could get in a lot of trouble." I looked at my feet, still standing in her doorway.

"I'm already in trouble." She sighed, replaced her glasses, and went back to writing. I turned to leave.

"Come back on Monday. After school. You'll have about 30 minutes."

The following Monday, I sat on the floor of her office and wrote down all my secrets, in green crayon, on a big piece of white paper. She turned in her seat while I wrote, arranging folders behind her desk that hadn't looked like they needed arranging 20 seconds ago. When I was done, I laid the paper on her desk.

As Lawrence's star has risen, so has the frequency with which Kitty said she is compared to the Academy Award winner.

"The more I've looked at her, the more I've realized that her features are sort of my features but more refined," she said.

She added, "I am a strong woman. I am in charge of how I look and I can change that and then change that again if I want."
