How Vine Became The Music Industry's Next Great Hope

Record executives are enamored with the loopy video service, which they view as part talent show, part viral distribution network. But how much is Vine stardom really worth?

Vine star-turned-major-label-recording-artist Shawn Mendes.

As president of Island Records and a veteran A&R man, David Massey would like to think that he can find talent anywhere. His ears are open and his senses battle-tested. In some instances, he says he can tell whether an artist will have a career in music within two minutes of meeting them.

Thirty years ago, Massey might have found the Next Big Thing at an open-mic night in a dimly lit dive. Ten years ago, he and his team were crawling Myspace for signs of life. But these days it's thriving digital platforms like YouTube, Soundcloud, and, most recently, Vine — the Twitter-owned social network comprised solely of looping, six-second, user-generated video clips — that Massey looks to as a hotbed for gifted young performers.

"It's a viable way to glance at someone and see if there's magic," Massey told BuzzFeed News of the bite-size video service. "In that short window of time you can get a real sense of their intelligence, their sense of humor, their vocal talent."

Since its launch in January 2013, Vine, which now draws more than 100 million views per month, has often felt more like a hyperactive talent show than a social network. Unlike the gaping maw of its bigger cousin YouTube, where videos can stretch the length of a feature film, or even the comparatively generous Instagram Video, which allows for 15-second clips, Vine's unsparing six-second rule seems to have attracted a disproportionate number of exceptionally creative strivers.

In six seconds, an aspiring filmmaker may not be able to tell much of a linear story, but they can use slick editing skills to turn ordinary household chores into treacherous sorcery. In the hands of Vine's many devoted comedians, the service's abbreviated videos become mini-master classes in setup and punchline. When it comes to musicians, the brief runtime affords only the tiniest taste of a song, but it can be more than enough to spotlight a winsome personality, telegenic face, or sticky hook — all important prerequisites for any would-be superstar.

"Getting across your charisma does not take long — even a photograph can tell you a lot about a person," said Massey. "You take a combination of a few great little Vine ideas and a face-to-face meeting with someone, and then you know."

Earlier this year, Island Records signed Vine phenomenon Shawn Mendes, a 15-year-old singer and guitarist with a Clark Kent jawline and a cherubic grin. Mendes migrated to Vine in 2013 from YouTube, which was by then saturated with wide-eyed bedroom crooners dreaming of becoming the next Justin Bieber. On Vine, Mendes posted a video of himself playing guitar while singing the hook to Bieber's song "As Long As You Love Me" and received 10,000 likes overnight. He followed that up with covers of Bruno Mars and other pop singers, and, by this spring, when Island and Massey came calling, had already amassed over 2.5 million followers on the service. (He now has 3.1 million.)

Arizona Congressman Claims It's "True That We Know That" ISIS Is On The U.S. Border

“It is true that we know that ISIS is present in Ciudad Juarez or they were within the last few weeks.” It appears he’s citing a report that federal authorities have dismissed.

A Republican Arizona congressman says ISIS currently is or has operated on the U.S. border in the past couple weeks, appearing to cite a report that federal authorities have dismissed.

Rep. Trent Franks, appearing on E.W. Jackson's radio program over the weekend, appeared to cite a report from a conservative website that has been dismissed by federal law enforcement officials about ISIS operating in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, on the border with El Paso.

"It is true, that we know that ISIS is present in Ciudad Juarez or they were within the last few weeks," Franks said. "So there's no question that they have designs on trying to come into Arizona. The comment that I've made is that if unaccompanied minors can cross the border then certainly trained terrorists probably can to. It is something that is real."

Franks appears to be referring to a report from the conservative watchdog website Judicial Watch, which report ISIS was operating on the U.S. Mexican border.

A DHS spokesman said the Judicial Watch report was false, telling the Daily Mail that "we are aware of absolutely nothing credible to substantiate this claim."

A federal law enforcement source also told El Paso's ABC7 the claim in the story was "unverified and unlikely."

Spoilers: This is only a theory, so there is no guarantee that this is correct. It also only includes information up to the end of the TV series, though some information used is only present in the books.

One of the most popular theories about Game of Thrones concerns exactly who who Jon Snow's father is, a theory commonly known as R + L = J.

The theory runs that he is in fact half Targaryen and half Stark, which would have interesting ramifications for the series.

Kira Kazantsev, who was crowned Miss America last night and whose platform was domestic violence, told NPR that people should stop judging Janay Rice for sticking by her husband, former Baltimore Ravens Ray Rice, even after he knocked her unconscious in an elevator.

The 22-year-old, who had herself been in an abusive relationship, told NPR:

I want people to stop asking, 'Why doesn't she just leave?' Every woman is an expert in her own case, and there are so many extenuating circumstances that lead to a woman staying with her abuser.

Kazantsev said that the woman in the abusive relationship should be the one to decide if she wants to leave or not. Friends and family should only offer their support.

Kazantsev works with a domestic violence advocacy organization called Safe Horizon. "The main goal is to get people talking about it," Kazantsev told NPR. "If people are willing to talk about it, they're not scared of it, it's not taboo."

After Rice was suspended from the NFL following the release of a video showing him knocking out Janay, his wife blamed the media for ruining his career and said the couple would "continue to grow and show the world what real love is."

Your girl JHud, steamier than you’ve ever heard her.

Jennifer Hudson teamed up with Pharrell and Iggy Azalea for her new song, "He Ain't Goin' Nowhere." It's a total pleasure party, and debuting on BuzzFeed today:

Pharrell produced the track, which features a verse from Iggy and this hot advice from Hudson: "Whisper in his ear it makes it hotter / Don’t wipe the sweat it makes it better."

w.soundcloud.com

"I hope it’s a song people can listen to and let the music do what it’s meant: let go of the shit that holds you back and just take a minute to dance and feel good,” Hudson told BuzzFeed News.

"I hope it’s a song people can listen to and let the music do what it’s meant: let go of the shit that holds you back and just take a minute to dance and feel good,” Hudson told BuzzFeed News.

She continued: "It’s that perfect mix of glamorous, late-night style, dance music from the past that has always really hit me deep."

The disco-tinged song was inspired by 20th century extravagance but made crisp and clean for contemporary listeners, she explained. "[Pharrell and I] were able to use music and soul to actively reminisce on those fantasy nights of the '60s and '70s," Hudson said. "We really worked to keep the sound relatable but the way the bass hits your chest and the guitar licks sort of tingle your ear really work well to transport you to a time in music history I just live for. It’s the sort of track you can’t listen to without moving and the fact that we were able to have Iggy join in on it was just what it needed. To be honest, I consider it one of the centerpieces of my album because it captures all the things that inspire me so well."

RCA Records

"He Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere" is taken from Hudson's upcoming third album, JHUD, which drops Sept. 23 via RCA.

Scottish Voters Don't Care What David Beckham Has To Say About Independence

$

“He’s always been known to be a bit dim,” said one voter.

Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

EDINBURGH – David Beckham might be the most popular man in most rooms, but the mood in Scotland is certainly not swinging in his favour after he delivered a pro-union message.

The former England football captain gave support to a petition signed by 200 stars and wrote: "We want to let you know how very much we value our relationship and friendship. Of course regardless of your decision that will never change, however, my sincere hope is that you will vote to renew our historic bond which has been such a success over the centuries and the envy of the entire world.

"What unites us is much greater than what divides us. Let's stay together."

Colin Storrier, who has taken two weeks leave from his job at Lloyds and was today campaigning in Edinburgh despite unrelenting rain, said celebrities were making the campaign unfair. "The campaign's not about celebrities," he said. "It's about the people living in this country and how we can make it better for them."

Celebrities, he said, have ''got millions, they've got mansions, they can't really relate to the children in poverty here. I don't really think they understand the circumstances. This is an issue for the normal working-class."

Another campaigner, 48-year-old former Scottish parliamentary official Alison Dickie, said the campaign should be "about the people of Scotland. I don't give a tuppence about what [Beckham] thinks. His view doesn't influence my opinion at all. This is an issue for the people of Scotland."

Another voter who's supporting independence is Seonaid Suominen, 60, who said that her whole family was voting Yes. Her mother passed away earlier this year but would also have voted for independence, she said.

Suominen criticised the Better Together campaign for "interference and scaremongering beyond imagination", and said Westminster politicians had a lot of questions to answer. She mentioned a video that went viral over the weekend in which Miliband avoided answering a question from a parent.

She added that Beckham's contribution just won't make a difference: "It leaves me cold. I don't think celebrities really matter in our campaign and our fight for our own independence. Beckham's a nice guy. He's a multimillionaire and he's not Scottish. Does his view really matter?"

Another voter, Robert Brown, 33, agreed, saying: "His opinion just doesn't matter. I don't think it's right to use celebrity votes.

"Plus he's always been known to be a bit dim, and he doesn't know enough about what's happening in Scotland. I reckon Scotland's got a lot more money and revenue and there's oil we're not making money from."
