David Cameron Can't Find Time To Take Part In Debate With Young People

After all the other main party leaders have taken part.

Eddie Keogh / Reuters

David Cameron has decided that he doesn't have enough time to take part in a live debate with young British people, six months after telling the group responsible he was interested in taking part.

Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg, Nigel Farage, and Natalie Bennett – the leaders of the other main parties – took part in live online debates before Christmas as part of the Bite the Ballot campaign, which sees YouTube stars grill politicians about various political issues.

But six months after telling Bite the Ballot he was interested, the prime minister has backed out, claiming he doesn't have any time in the four months left until the general election.

"Yesterday we received communication saying that he's too busy to take part," a spokesman for Bite the Ballot told BuzzFeed News, "and that on the day we had suggested he will have to be at the European Commission.

"We said, 'There's 114 days until the election, just wanted to clarify that you don't have an hour to take part,' and we got a response that said, 'Not at this time.'"

A spokesperson for the Conservative party said the prime minister "never agreed to it in the first place". But Bite the Ballot disputes that claim, and says it has emails from his advisers to that effect.

A Bite the Ballot spokesman said: "He agreed. We've got plenty of correspondence to say that he agreed to take part. All he said was they needed to find a date that worked for them.

"We told David Cameron that we had to go public [to generate interest in the debates]. They came back to us saying yes, we're happy. We just need to find a date."

The spokesman added: "From our stance, he has agreed. We were just finding a date and that was the conversation that was happening."

A No. 10 spokesman countered the claims. "It's not true to say he's pulled out and we've raised this with the Bite the Ballot team," he said.

"We've been trying to make it work logistically. We've never given them a categorical yes that he's going to take part. It is not an accurate reflection of our position to say that he's pulled out.

"Up until a point, they were asking if they could say it publicly, and we've said that you can say you're in discussions with the prime minister to see if you can find a date.

"I can understand why they'd thought they definitely got this but that's not our view at all on this. We'd up until this point been engaging with them to see if we can make this work.

"But we hadn't. So he hasn't pulled out."

Eric Garner's Family Recorded An Emotional Tribute Song

Entitled "This Ends Today", the emotionally gripping song features a rap verse and vocals from Garner's daughter Erica and his brother, Steven Flagg.

The song opens with a muffled voice recording of Garner's final words ("I can't breathe") before Erica sings the chorus: "Who is the man with the strength to choose? / When the rest refuse / And I say, 'This ends today.'"

Flagg then cuts in with a growly rap verse: "It's sad how my brother Eric Garner was killed / The pain in my heart still refuses to heal / Today some police be plottin' to kill."

The emotional lines reverberate throughout. "Justice or all, not justice for one/ This is how all this begun," Erica relays in her own rhymes. "What was the circumstances of his death?/ Why couldn't he take another breath?"

The track was produced by Flagg, but it apparently was the first time the 24-year-old has ever recorded a song. "It just came from the heart," he told New York Daily News. "We want to get it out there on the radio, anywhere, so as many people as possible hear it.”

The Last Temptation Of Mitt

How Romney got from 11 no’s to maybe on the question of 2016 — and what he has to decide before he takes the plunge. “Can you imagine what Ted Cruz is going to do to Jeb Bush?” one Romney insider tells BuzzFeed News.

Mitt Romney

Brian Snyder / Reuters

It wasn't long after Mitt Romney tottered off the national stage in November, 2012, bringing an end — it seemed — to the long, tragic story of his political career, when Spencer Zwick started getting phone calls from conservative millionaires who were clamoring for one last sequel.

Zwick, the square-jawed finance wunderkind who masterminded the candidate's phenomenally successful fundraising operation in 2012, had returned after the election to the private equity firm he co-founded with Romney's son, Tagg — but Mitt's network of GOP money men wouldn't stop hounding him. Inside Solamere Capital's pristine, white-walled offices on Boston's trendy Newbury Street, Zwick often found himself on the phone with major Republican fundraisers, bundlers, and donors putting the same questions to him.

"I got calls from people every day asking, 'Do you think he'll do it? How can we convince him to do it?'" Zwick said in an interview with BuzzFeed News.

With Friday's news that Romney told a group of donors he was now actively considering a third presidential bid in 2016, it appears the boosters have gotten through. "Everybody in here can go tell your friends that I'm considering a run," the former candidate told the gathering in midtown Manhattan, according to Politico. But insiders who spoke to BuzzFeed News about Romney's evolution on the 2016 question said he only began to entertain the possibility recently, and that he still needs to weigh a number of factors — including Jeb Bush's electability — before he decides to take the plunge.

Zwick didn't need donors to convince him that the ex-nominee should run again; as a longtime loyalist who had worked closely with Romney from the Salt Lake City Olympics to the Massachusetts governor's office and beyond, he said he repeatedly urged his mentor to keep his options open after the 2012 election.

"My argument was that 60 million people already voted for this guy," Zwick said. "He has the experience, he has the background, he has the skill set. My view is if we're going to beat Hillary Clinton or Elizabeth Warren or whoever they nominate, we have to find somebody who can not only get through the primary, but who knows he can do the job. I don't see somebody in the [Republican] field who has the skill set he does. My view is he has to do this."

But despite all the cheerleading, Zwick said Romney was genuinely averse to the idea of a third run all through 2013 and much of 2014 — a sentiment that often came through whenever reporters asked him about his political future. For example, when a New York Times reporter interviewed him a year ago after the Sundance Film Festival screening of the documentary, Mitt — a sympathetic portrayal that did much to rehabilitate his image, at least in the political class — she asked whether he would run again. His response: "Oh no, no, no. No, no, no, no, no. No, no, no."

Most political observers counted the no's (there were 11) and took the emphatic denial at face value.

"I truly think that it was never a thought that he would ever do it again," Zwick said.

But then, the midterm elections kicked into gear and Romney — who became an in-demand surrogate and fundraiser, stumping in races across the country — caught the campaign bug again.

"Through the 2014 elections, he spent a lot of time on the road talking to voters," Zwick said. "He was reminded once again being on the trail that there are a lot of really important issues facing the country and he has the skill set to solve them, and that has weighed heavily on him."

The midterms also corresponded with a wave of stories in the political press about a possible Romney 2016 bid, many of which originated with supporters who wanted to fertilize the speculation. It worked; the stories ensured that hopeful donors would keep calling Zwick and other people they believed to have Romney's ear, making the media predictions a self-fulfilling prophecy. Zwick said he couldn't point to one day or event that changed the ex-candidate's mind, but he eventually began to see more willingness on Romney's part to engage the idea.

Another former campaign adviser said Romney has been troubled by the Obama administration's foreign policy, and what he sees as the disastrous consequences of the United States shrinking from its role as international leader.

"Mitt has been waking up every morning watching what's happening to the world, and he's incredibly distressed," said the adviser, who requested anonymity to speak without Romney's permission. He added that the former candidate believes his widely mocked 2012 warnings about Russia being "our number one geopolitical foe" — along with other hawkish campaign rhetoric — has been vindicated by world events. "Mitt predicted everything."

As he weighs his choices in the coming weeks, Romney won't be deterred by which candidates enter the primary, or by any displays of fundraising muscle-flexing, Zwick said. Earlier on Friday, Bloomberg Politics reported that Bush's team set a fundraising goal of $100 million for the first three months of this year in an effort to scare off prospective primary opponents. (Bush's spokesperson said the goal came from donors, and that their actual target is "far more modest.")

But Zwick said fundraising is the least of their concerns.

"It's a primary," he said. "You go back, there's always been multiple candidates in the race that could raise money…. And he has actually already won a primary before."

According to one former adviser, the biggest political question Romney will be considering as he makes his decision is whether Bush will be able to make it to the general election.

"Look, Jeb's a good guy. I think the governor likes Jeb," the adviser said. "But Jeb is Common Core, Jeb is immigration, Jeb has been talking about raising taxes recently. Can you imagine Jeb trying to get through a Republican primary? Can you imagine what Ted Cruz is going to do to Jeb Bush? I mean, that's going to be ugly."

The adviser added that aside from Bush, Romney doesn't believe any of the Republicans in the field are ready to take on Hillary Clinton in the general election.

"He's not going to be intimidated by Bill Clinton sitting in the front row of a debate, looking at him," the adviser said of Romney. "His dad has run for president. He's run before."

Charged-Up “Looking” Digs Deeper In Season 2

$

After a slow-burn first season, the San Francisco-set HBO comedy-drama has become an even richer look at gay life. BuzzFeed News talked to the show’s actors and executive producer about the diversity issue, unlikable characters, and what to expect this year. Minor spoilers ahead.

Agustín (Frankie J. Álvarez), Patrick (Jonathan Groff), and Dom (Murray Bartlett) in the Season 2 premiere of Looking.

Richard Foreman / HBO

On a show called Looking, it's bound to take a while before the characters find what they're searching for.

Season 1 of HBO's half-hour comedy-drama, which follows the lives of three gay friends — naïve Patrick (Jonathan Groff), aimless Agustín (Frankie J. Álvarez), and stunted Dom (Murray Bartlett) — as they navigate life in San Francisco, ended with the characters at a bit of a low point. But that was by design, according to executive producer Andrew Haigh, planned from the beginning by Haigh and Looking creator Michael Lannan to place each of the characters in flux at the end of the season: Patrick ended the season dumped by Richie (Raúl Castillo) just as he decided he was ready for a relationship.

"Patrick has no fucking clue what he's doing, I don't think," Haigh told BuzzFeed News in an interview at his office in Looking's post-production space, a converted house in Hollywood. "Agustín, obviously, rock bottom at the end of last season, fucked his life up basically by ruining his relationship. I think this season is him trying to sort his life out, make it better, make better decisions. And Dom is on the same path as he was last time, still trying to make his dreams come true, and work out that relationship with Lynn [Scott Bakula] and how that works and what that's gonna be."

Season 2 of Looking, which launches on HBO on Jan. 11, picks up shortly after Season 1 has ended. And while the friends are working to climb out of the holes they've found themselves in, in some ways they have dug themselves in deeper. Patrick in particular finds himself in a tough spot: Now removed from his almost-stable relationship with Richie, he's dealing with the aftermath of sleeping with his already coupled boss Kevin (Russell Tovey) in the Season 1 finale.

At the start of Season 2, Patrick still hasn't told his friends about his inappropriate hook-up. "[The writers] didn't build to something in the first season and then hit the reset button. We pick up all the characters where they left off, in the thick of their drama," Groff told BuzzFeed News earlier this week. "They don't waste any time with this season. They really just jump right in."

That increased pace reflects a newfound confidence Looking has in its storytelling. It's also a testament to the work the series did in its first season to establish the characters and build their world, allowing Season 2 to dive in without much exposition.

Haigh knows that "slow burn" storytelling doesn't work for everyone, especially viewers accustomed to more plot-driven shows, particularly half-hour series, but he's confident that the writers taking their time with the first season was the right approach for introducing audiences to Looking, and he's excited about the opportunity to build on it. "Now the characters are set up, so it means we can set them loose a little bit," he said, "which does enable us to move slightly quicker through stories and through plot and through characterization, and that helps us."

Season 2 is also broadening its scope: In addition to the three central friends, Looking has bumped up Castillo, Tovey, and Lauren Weedman — who plays Dom's roommate Doris — to series regulars. In the first two episodes of the new season, viewers also meet Eddie (Daniel Franzese) and Malik (Bashir Salahuddin), potential new love interests for Agustín and Doris, respectively.

Then there's the increased episode count, going from eight last season to ten this year, which Haigh said allows the writers to tell increasingly complex stories. For the most part, Looking is the same show it was last season, still interested in telling grounded, character-driven stories. But it's also become undeniably expansive: a deeper, more intricate look at the lives of these men, and the people around them.

"I think it probably does feel a little bit bigger. I think our episodes feel bigger than they did last year," Haigh said. "In terms of production this year, every single episode felt bigger than any of the episodes that we shot last year, in terms of locations and actors and all of those things. I think we've certainly upped the ante a little bit."

Patrick and Richie (Raúl Castillo).

John P. Johnson / HBO

Some of the changes were less perceptible to the actors than others. Castillo told BuzzFeed News that being promoted from a recurring character to a series regular between seasons felt like more of a contractual decision than a reflection on his role in the show.

"Richie was so part of the first season," he said. "The first season was the initiation of this relationship. I think the second season is really an exploration of where they are moving forward."

The tenuous relationship between Richie and Patrick remains one of the focal points of Looking. And Patrick is working hard to reconcile his feelings for Kevin, which he now knows are reciprocated. Both potential love interests bring out different sides of Patrick, who struggles to assert himself and shake off his Season 1 indecisiveness.

"Patrick has great potential, and I think Richie is an example of that in a way," Castillo continued. "Richie is an example of the great love that Patrick can find, and kind of his most ideal self."

While it's far too soon to know which man Patrick will end up with — or if he'll break free from both — Haigh admitted that he has an endgame in mind for Groff's character. At the same time, he's not eager to get there: The series is about the seemingly impossible challenges of finding exactly what you're looking for. And once you get there, of course, there's no telling you'll be satisfied.

Groff himself chooses to focus on the varying relationship dynamics and less on where his character might end up.

"Patrick finds himself really opening up to Richie, and he's really attracted to Richie. They have sort of an initial undeniable spark," he said, reflecting on what led his character to the love triangle Patrick has found himself in. "He's able to be himself with Kevin because it's not an option for it to be romantic. So there's a connection there because of the sort of situation that they're both in. Patrick isn't as self-conscious and weird because he feels like nothing really romantic can happen, which allows both of those relationships, the one with Richie and Patrick and the one with Kevin and Patrick, to develop in different ways, because the rules are different."

And because Looking remains tightly focused on these characters' inner lives, these ever-shifting dynamics keep the show complex without sacrificing its narrative restraint.

13 Movie Stars Who Peaked Over 50

$
0
0

As Liam Neeson, Meryl Streep, and Denzel Washington can tell you, life in Hollywood doesn’t have to end when you reach middle age.

Alice Mongkongllite for BuzzFeed

It's an adage as old as Hollywood (which is, mind you, really, really old) that the older a movie star gets, the less of a draw that star is at the box office. Younger people supposedly go to the movies more often than older people, and young people don't like to be reminded that they will, in fact, get old. Only wrinkle-free skin and coming-of-age stories matter.

Yet, a small handful of stars have enjoyed the best opening weekends of their careers after they turned 50 — especially (though not exclusively) over the last decade or so. And they've done so not in wizened supporting roles, or even in major starring roles in massive brand-name franchises. These are movies in which one of the central selling points is that this particular actor over 50 is starring in this particular lead role.

The most recent member to join the elite club of Success Stories Post-50 is Liam Neeson, whose 2009 megahit Taken pioneered a new career path for Baby Boomer male actors: kick-ass action star. For the last six years, Neeson has headlined a series of old-school action films, peaking — so far — with 2012's Taken 2, which opened with $49.7 million when he was 60.

With the third (and final?) film in that series, Taken 3, opening this weekend, it seemed fitting to celebrate the actors like Neeson who have proven life in Hollywood can get even sweeter after turning 50.

(A note on criteria: I drew from the 150 top-grossing stars according to Box Office Mojo, and focused on opening weekend grosses, the best — but still flawed — barometer for a star's drawing power. I also adjusted for ticket price inflation. I concentrated only on live-action films in which the actor in question had a lead, above-the-title role, and did not include films for which the franchise itself was the main draw — like Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings. This meant some over-50 actors who are popular, like Samuel L. Jackson and Ian McKellan, didn't make this particular list.)

Dustin Hoffman

Dustin Hoffman

Movie: Meet the Fockers (2004)
Age at release: 67
Opening weekend (adjusted): $60,009,300
Current age: 77

Hoffman was past standard retirement age when he co-starred in the enormously lucrative sequel to 2000's Meet the Parents, performing alongside Barbra Streisand as Ben Stiller's titular parents. This movie was such a gargantuan hit ($516.6 million worldwide! And it's a comedy!) that it also served as the box office high watermark for someone else on this list. (See No. 6.)

Universal / Courtesy Everett Collection

Sean Connery

Sean Connery

Movie: The Rock (1996)
Age at release: 66
Opening weekend (adjusted): $45,828,500
Current age: 84

Connery's early career was haunted by the ghost of James Bond, but by the 1980s, he had become a full-fledged star outside of 007's tuxedo, with hits including The Untouchables, The Hunt for Red October, and Rising Sun. But he reached his box office peak with one of director Michael Bay's earliest films, as the only Alcatraz inmate to ever escape from the prison. Fun fact: This is also co-star Nicolas Cage's best opening weekend ever. He was 32.
